² For then the king of Babylon’s army besieged Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up ^(A)in the court of the prison, which was in the king of Judah’s house.

²¹ Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah ^(A)to the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread from the bakers’ street, ^(B)until all the bread in the city was gone. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

²⁵ Palal the son of Uzai made repairs opposite the ^[a]buttress, and on the tower which projects from the king’s upper house that was by the ^(A)court of the prison. After him Pedaiah the son of Parosh made repairs.

^6 (A)So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah ^[a]the king’s son, which was in the court of the prison, and they let Jeremiah down with ropes. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire. So Jeremiah sank in the mire.

Excellence of the Restored Nation

33 Moreover the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still ^(A)shut up in the court of the prison, saying,

⁸ Then Hanamel my uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the Lord, and said to me, ‘Please buy my field that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin; for the right of inheritance is yours, and the redemption yours; buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord.

^12 (A)Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for ^(B)so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

¹³ So Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard sent Nebushasban, Rabsaris, Nergal-Sharezer, Rabmag, and all the king of Babylon’s chief officers; ¹⁴ then they sent someone ^(A)to take Jeremiah from the court of the prison, and committed him ^(B)to Gedaliah the son of ^(C)Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, that he should take him home. So he dwelt among the people.

¹⁵ Meanwhile the word of the Lord had come to Jeremiah while he was shut up in the court of the prison, saying,

⁵ And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, “I am confined, I cannot go into the house of the Lord.

³ For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, “Why do you ^(A)prophesy and say, ‘Thus says the Lord: ^(B)“Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it;
