¹⁸ You show ^(A)lovingkindness to thousands, and repay the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them—the Great, ^(B)the Mighty God, whose name is ^(C)the Lord of hosts.

^7 (A)keeping mercy for thousands, ^(B)forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, ^(C)by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”

⁹ “Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, ^(A)the faithful God ^(B)who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments; ¹⁰ and He repays those who hate Him to their face, to destroy them. He will not ^[a]be ^(C)slack with him who hates Him; He will repay him to his face.

²⁵ And all the people answered and said, ^(A)“His blood be on us and on our children.”

^32 (A)Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers’ guilt. ³³ Serpents, ^(B)brood^[a] of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell? ^34 (C)Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: ^(D)some of them you will kill and crucify, and ^(E)some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, ^35 (F)that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, ^(G)from the blood of righteous Abel to ^(H)the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.
