“‘Cries of fear^(A) are heard—
    terror, not peace.

¹⁰ “On that day,^(A)”
    declares the Lord,
“a cry will go up from the Fish Gate,^(B)
    wailing^(C) from the New Quarter,
    and a loud crash from the hills.
¹¹ Wail,^(D) you who live in the market district^[a];
    all your merchants will be wiped out,
    all who trade with^[b] silver will be destroyed.^(E)

¹⁰ I will turn your religious festivals^(A) into mourning
    and all your singing into weeping.^(B)
I will make all of you wear sackcloth^(C)
    and shave^(D) your heads.
I will make that time like mourning for an only son^(E)
    and the end of it like a bitter day.^(F)

³⁰ In that day^(A) they will roar over it
    like the roaring of the sea.^(B)
And if one looks at the land,
    there is only darkness^(C) and distress;^(D)
    even the sun will be darkened^(E) by clouds.

“‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!”
    and to the hills, “Cover us!”’^[a](B)

“There will be wailing^(A) in all the streets^(B)
    and cries of anguish in every public square.
The farmers^(C) will be summoned to weep
    and the mourners to wail.
¹⁷ There will be wailing^(D) in all the vineyards,
    for I will pass through^(E) your midst,”
says the Lord.^(F)

⁵ What do I see?
    They are terrified,
they are retreating,
    their warriors are defeated.
They flee^(A) in haste
    without looking back,
    and there is terror^(B) on every side,”
declares the Lord.
