Hananiah’s Falsehood and Doom

28 And ^(A)it happened in the same year, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the ^(B)fourth year and in the fifth month, that Hananiah the son of ^(C)Azur the prophet, who was from Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the Lord in the presence of the priests and of all the people, saying,

27 In^[a] the beginning of the reign of ^[b]Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, ^(A)king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,

³ But when the inhabitants of ^(A)Gibeon ^(B)heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,

² “It shall be in that day,” says the Lord of hosts, “that I will ^(A)cut off the names of the idols from the land, and they shall no longer be remembered. I will also cause ^(B)the prophets and the unclean spirit to depart from the land. ³ It shall come to pass that if anyone still prophesies, then his father and mother who begot him will say to him, ‘You shall ^(C)not live, because you have spoken lies in the name of the Lord.’ And his father and mother who begot him ^(D)shall thrust him through when he prophesies.

⁴ “And it shall be in that day that ^(E)every prophet will be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies; they will not wear ^(F)a robe of coarse hair to deceive.

¹³ And when he was in the Gate of Benjamin, a captain of the guard was there whose name was Irijah the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “You are defecting to the Chaldeans!”

¹² he then went down to the king’s house, into the scribe’s chamber; and there all the princes were sitting—^(A)Elishama the scribe, Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, ^(B)Elnathan the son of Achbor, Gemariah the son of Shaphan, Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the princes.

¹¹ And Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Even so I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon ^(A)from the neck of all nations within the space of two full years.’ ” And the prophet Jeremiah went his way.

¹² I also spoke to ^(A)Zedekiah king of Judah according to all these words, saying, “Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him and his people, and live!

³ and send them to the king of Edom, the king of Moab, the king of the Ammonites, the king of Tyre, and the king of Sidon, by the hand of the messengers who come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah.
