⁷ The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord.

The Apostles Are Persecuted

¹⁷ Then the high priest took action; he and all who were with him (that is, the sect of the Sadducees), being filled with jealousy,

Peter and John before the Council

4 While Peter and John^[a] were speaking to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came to them,^{(A) 2} much annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming that in Jesus there is the resurrection of the dead.^{(B) 3} So they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening.^{(C) 4} But many of those who heard the word believed, and they numbered about five thousand.^(D)

⁵ The next day their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem,^{(E) 6} with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John,^[b] and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family.^(F)

¹⁵ But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the amazing things that he did and heard^[a] the children crying out in the temple and saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they became angry^(A)

²⁵ Its princes^[a] within it are like a roaring lion tearing the prey; they have devoured human lives; they have taken treasure and precious things; they have made many widows within it.^{(A) 26} Its priests have done violence to my teaching and have profaned my holy things; they have made no distinction between the holy and the common, neither have they taught the difference between the unclean and the clean, and they have disregarded my Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them.^(B)
