² which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the people of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem:

¹¹ Now, therefore, say to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: ‘Thus says the Lord, Behold, I am shaping disaster against you and devising a plan against you. ^(A)Return, every one from his evil way, and ^(B)amend your ways and your deeds.’

What Defiles a Person

¹⁴ And he called the people to him again and said to them, ^(A)“Hear me, all of you, and understand: ^15 (B)There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.”^[a]

Jeremiah Cast into the Cistern

38 Now Shephatiah the son of Mattan, Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, ^(A)Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and ^(B)Pashhur the son of Malchiah heard the words that Jeremiah was saying to all the people: ² “Thus says the Lord: ^(C)He who stays in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, ^(D)but he who goes out to the Chaldeans shall live. He shall have his life as a prize of war, and live.

¹³ “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Go and say to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, ^(A)Will you not receive instruction and listen to my words? declares the Lord.

² “Thus says the Lord: ^(A)Stand in the court of the Lord's house, and speak to all the cities of Judah that come to worship in the house of the Lord ^(B)all the words that I command you to speak to them; ^(C)do not hold back a word.

¹⁴ Then Jeremiah came from ^(A)Topheth, where the Lord had sent him to prophesy, ^(B)and he stood in the court of the Lord's house and said to all the people: ¹⁵ “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, behold, I am bringing upon this city and upon all its towns all the disaster that I have pronounced against it, ^(C)because they have stiffened their neck, ^(D)refusing to hear my words.”
