⁹ And the answer will be: ‘Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God and have worshiped and served other gods.^(A)’”

²⁵ Because they have forsaken me^(A) and burned incense to other gods and aroused my anger by all that their hands have made,^[a] my anger will be poured out on this place and will not be quenched.’

¹⁷ Because they have forsaken^(A) me and burned incense to other gods and aroused my anger by all the idols their hands have made,^[a] my anger will burn against this place and will not be quenched.’

² When the commander^(A) of the guard found Jeremiah, he said to him, “The Lord your God decreed^(B) this disaster^(C) for this place.^{(D) 3} And now the Lord has brought it about; he has done just as he said he would. All this happened because you people sinned^(E) against the Lord and did not obey^(F) him.

²⁵ And the answer will be: “It is because this people abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt.^{(A) 26} They went off and worshiped other gods and bowed down to them, gods they did not know, gods he had not given them. ²⁷ Therefore the Lord’s anger burned against this land, so that he brought on it all the curses written in this book.^{(B) 28} In furious anger and in great wrath^(C) the Lord uprooted^(D) them from their land and thrust them into another land, as it is now.”
