¹⁷ Like the wind from the east,
    I will scatter them before the enemy.
I will show them my back, not my face,
    in the day of their calamity.^(A)

²⁴ I will scatter you^[a] like chaff
    driven by the wind from the desert.^(A)

²⁷ who say to a tree, “You are my father,”
    and to a stone, “You gave me birth.”
For they have turned their backs to me
    and not their faces.
But in the time of their trouble they say,
    “Come and save us!”^(A)

⁷ as when an east wind shatters
    the ships of Tarshish.^(A)

²¹ The east wind lifts them up, and they are gone;
    it sweeps them out of their place.^(A)

²¹ Even her mercenaries in her midst
    are like fatted calves;
they, too, have turned and fled together;
    they did not stand,
for the day of their calamity has come upon them,
    the time of their punishment.^(A)

²⁵ Do not let your hearts turn aside to her ways;
    do not stray into her paths.^(A)
26 For many are those she has laid low,
    and numerous are her victims.^(B)
