¹³ The Lord says:

¹⁶ They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him.^(A) They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.^(B)

¹⁷ The Lord Almighty, who planted^(A) you, has decreed disaster^(B) for you, because the people of both Israel and Judah have done evil and aroused^(C) my anger by burning incense to Baal.^(D)

³¹ My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before^(A) you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy^(B) for unjust gain.^(C)

⁵ “‘He took one of the seedlings of the land and put it in fertile soil. He planted it like a willow by abundant water,^{(A) 6} and it sprouted and became a low, spreading vine. Its branches^(B) turned toward him, but its roots remained under it. So it became a vine and produced branches and put out leafy boughs.^(C)

⁷ “‘But there was another great eagle with powerful wings and full plumage. The vine now sent out its roots toward him from the plot where it was planted and stretched out its branches to him for water.^{(D) 8} It had been planted in good soil by abundant water so that it would produce branches,^(E) bear fruit and become a splendid vine.’

⁹ “Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Will it thrive? Will it not be uprooted and stripped of its fruit so that it withers? All its new growth will wither. It will not take a strong arm or many people to pull it up by the roots.^{(F) 10} It has been planted,^(G) but will it thrive? Will it not wither completely when the east wind strikes it—wither away in the plot where it grew?^(H)’”

⁴ But the Lord has told me to say to you, ‘This is what the Lord says: I will overthrow what I have built and uproot^(A) what I have planted,^(B) throughout the earth.^(C)

⁶ He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:
