    and do not inquire of the Lord;
therefore they have not prospered,
    (C)and all their flock is scattered.

(A)“Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy, and say to them, even to the shepherds, Thus says the Lord God: (B)Ah, shepherds of Israel (C)who have been feeding yourselves! (D)Should not shepherds feed the sheep? (E)You eat the fat, you clothe yourselves with the wool, (F)you slaughter the fat ones, but you do not feed the sheep. (G)The weak you have not strengthened, the sick you have not healed, (H)the injured you have not bound up, (I)the strayed you have not brought back, (J)the lost you have not sought, and with force and (K)harshness you have ruled them. (L)So they were scattered, because there was no shepherd, and (M)they became food for all the wild beasts. My sheep were scattered; they wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. My sheep were scattered over all the face of the earth, (N)with none to search or seek for them.

“Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: (O)As I live, declares the Lord God, surely because (P)my sheep have become a prey, and my sheep have become food for all the wild beasts, since there was no shepherd, and because my shepherds have not searched for my sheep, but the shepherds have fed themselves, and have not fed my sheep, therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 10 Thus says the Lord God, (Q)Behold, I am against the shepherds, and (R)I will require my sheep at their hand and (S)put a stop to their feeding the sheep. (T)No longer shall the shepherds feed themselves. (U)I will rescue my sheep from their mouths, that they may not be food for them.

23 (A)“Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord. Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning (B)the shepherds who care for my people: “You have scattered my flock and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. (C)Behold, I will attend to you for your evil deeds, declares the Lord.

25 (A)The conspiracy of her prophets in her midst is (B)like a roaring lion (C)tearing the prey; they have devoured human lives; they have taken treasure and precious things; they have made many widows in her midst. 26 (D)Her priests (E)have done violence to my law and (F)have profaned my holy things. (G)They have made no distinction between the holy and the common, neither have they taught the difference between the unclean and the clean, and (H)they have disregarded my Sabbaths, (I)so that I am profaned among them. 27 (J)Her princes in her midst are like wolves (K)tearing the prey, (L)shedding blood, destroying lives to get dishonest gain. 28 And (M)her prophets have smeared whitewash for them, (N)seeing false visions and divining lies for them, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord God,’ when the Lord has not spoken. 29 The people of the land (O)have practiced extortion and committed robbery. They have oppressed the poor and needy, and (P)have extorted from the sojourner without justice. 30 (Q)And I sought for a man among them (R)who should build up the wall (S)and stand in the breach before me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none.

Lying Prophets

Concerning the prophets:

(A)My heart is broken within me;
    (B)all my bones shake;
I am like a drunken man,
    like a man overcome by wine,
because of the Lord
    and because of his holy words.
10 (C)For the land is full of adulterers;
    (D)because of the curse (E)the land mourns,
    and (F)the pastures of the wilderness are dried up.
(G)Their course is evil,
    and their might is not right.
11 (H)“Both prophet and priest are ungodly;
    even (I)in my house I have found their evil,
declares the Lord.
12 (J)Therefore their way shall be to them
    like slippery paths (K)in the darkness,
    into which they shall be driven and fall,
for I will bring disaster upon them
    (L)in the year of their punishment,
declares the Lord.
13 In the prophets of (M)Samaria
    (N)I saw an unsavory thing:
(O)they prophesied by Baal
    (P)and led my people Israel astray.
14 But in the prophets of Jerusalem
    I have seen a horrible thing:
(Q)they commit adultery and walk in lies;
    (R)they strengthen the hands of evildoers,
    so that no one turns from his evil;
(S)all of them have become like Sodom to me,
    (T)and its inhabitants like Gomorrah.”
15 Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts concerning the prophets:
(U)“Behold, I will feed them with bitter food
    (V)and give them (W)poisoned water to drink,
for from the prophets of Jerusalem
    ungodliness has gone out into all the land.”

16 Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, (X)filling you with vain hopes. (Y)They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord. 17 They say continually to those who despise the word of the Lord, (Z)‘It shall be well with you’; and to everyone who (AA)stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, (AB)‘No disaster shall come upon you.’”

18 For (AC)who among them has stood in the council of the Lord
    to see and to hear his word,
    or who has paid attention to his word and listened?
19 (AD)Behold, the storm of the Lord!
    Wrath has gone forth,
(AE)a whirling tempest;
    it will burst upon the head of the wicked.
20 (AF)The anger of the Lord will not turn back
    until he has executed and (AG)accomplished
    the intents of his heart.
(AH)In the latter days you will understand it clearly.

21 (AI)“I did not send the prophets,
    yet they ran;
I did not speak to them,
    yet they prophesied.
22 (AJ)But if they had stood in my council,
    then they would have proclaimed my words to my people,
(AK)and they would have turned them from their evil way,
    and (AL)from the evil of their deeds.

23 (AM)“Am I a God at hand, declares the Lord, and not a God far away? 24 (AN)Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. (AO)Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord. 25 I have heard what the prophets have said (AP)who prophesy lies in my name, saying, (AQ)‘I have dreamed, I have dreamed!’ 26 How long shall there be lies in the heart of (AR)the prophets who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart, 27 who think to make my people forget my name (AS)by their dreams that they tell one another, even as their (AT)fathers forgot my name for Baal? 28 (AU)Let the prophet who has a dream (AV)tell the dream, but let him who has my word speak my word faithfully. (AW)What has straw in common with wheat? declares the Lord. 29 (AX)Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and (AY)like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces? 30 (AZ)Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, declares the Lord, who steal my words from one another. 31 Behold, I am against the prophets, declares the Lord, who use their tongues and declare, ‘declares the Lord.’ 32 Behold, I am against those who prophesy lying dreams, declares the Lord, and who tell them and (BA)lead my people astray by their lies and their recklessness, when (BB)I did not send them or charge them. So they do not profit this people at all, declares the Lord.
