(E)O Tyre and Sidon, and all the coasts of Philistia?

5 Because you have taken My silver and My gold,

6 Also the people of Judah and the people of Jerusalem

for what they did to my inheritance, my people Israel,
because they scattered(F) my people among the nations
and divided up my land.

and traded boys for prostitutes;
they sold girls for wine(H) to drink.
4 “Now what have you against me, Tyre and Sidon(I) and all you regions of Philistia?(J) Are you repaying me for something I have done? If you are paying me back, I will swiftly and speedily return on your own heads what you have done.(K) 5 For you took my silver and my gold and carried off my finest treasures to your temples.[c](L) 6 You sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks,(M) that you might send them far from their homeland.

Are withheld from the house of your God.
14 (U)Consecrate a fast,
Call (V)a sacred assembly;
Gather the elders
And (W)all the inhabitants of the land
Into the house of the Lord your God,
And cry out to the Lord.
15 (X)Alas for the day!
For (Y)the day of the Lord is at hand;
It shall come as destruction from the Almighty.
16 Is not the food (Z)cut off before our eyes,

A Call to Lamentation

Come, spend the night in sackcloth,
you who minister before my God;
for the grain offerings and drink offerings(AD)
are withheld from the house of your God.
14 Declare a holy fast;(AE)
call a sacred assembly.
Summon the elders
and all who live in the land(AF)
to the house of the Lord your God,
and cry out(AG) to the Lord.(AH)
15 Alas for that(AI) day!
For the day of the Lord(AJ) is near;
it will come like destruction from the Almighty.[c](AK)

24 Behold, the Lord makes the earth empty and makes it waste,
Distorts its surface
And scatters abroad its inhabitants.
2 And it shall be:

As with the servant, so with his master;
As with the maid, so with her mistress;
(B)As with the buyer, so with the seller;
As with the lender, so with the borrower;
As with the creditor, so with the debtor.
3 The land shall be entirely emptied and utterly plundered,
For the Lord has spoken this word.
4 The earth mourns and fades away,
The world languishes and fades away;
The (C)haughty[a] people of the earth languish.
5 (D)The earth is also defiled under its inhabitants,
Because they have (E)transgressed the laws,
Changed the ordinance,

The Lord’s Devastation of the Earth
24 See, the Lord is going to lay waste the earth(A)
and devastate(B) it;
he will ruin its face
and scatter(C) its inhabitants—

for the mistress as for her servant,
for seller as for buyer,(E)
for borrower as for lender,
for debtor as for creditor.(F)
3 The earth will be completely laid waste(G)
and totally plundered.(H)
The Lord has spoken(I) this word.
4 The earth dries up(J) and withers,(K)
the world languishes and withers,
the heavens(L) languish with the earth.(M)
5 The earth is defiled(N) by its people;

violated the statutes

its people must bear their guilt.

the earth is violently shaken.

so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion(BM)

He looked for justice, but behold, oppression;

They add field to field,
Till there is no place
Where they may dwell alone in the midst of the land!

There he is, in the vineyard of Naboth, where he has gone down to take possession of it. 19 You shall speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Have you murdered and also taken possession?” ’ And you shall speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord: (B)“In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth, dogs shall lick your blood, even yours.” ’ ”
20 So Ahab said to Elijah, (C)“Have you found me, O my enemy?”
And he answered, “I have found you, because (D)you have sold yourself to do evil in the sight of the Lord: 21 ‘Behold, (E)I will bring calamity on you. I will take away your (F)posterity, and will cut off from Ahab (G)every male in Israel, both (H)bond and free. 22 I will make your house like the house of (I)Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of (J)Baasha the son of Ahijah, because of the provocation with which you have provoked Me to anger, and made Israel sin.’ 23 And (K)concerning Jezebel the Lord also spoke, saying, ‘The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the [a]wall of Jezreel.’ 24 The dogs shall eat (L)whoever belongs to Ahab and dies in the city, and the birds of the air shall eat whoever dies in the field.”

18 “Go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who rules in Samaria. He is now in Naboth’s vineyard, where he has gone to take possession of it. 19 Say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Have you not murdered a man and seized his property?’(A) Then say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: In the place where dogs licked up Naboth’s blood,(B) dogs(C) will lick up your blood—yes, yours!’”

“I have found you,” he answered, “because you have sold(E) yourself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord. 21 He says, ‘I am going to bring disaster on you. I will wipe out your descendants and cut off from Ahab every last male(F) in Israel—slave or free.[a](G) 22 I will make your house(H) like that of Jeroboam son of Nebat and that of Baasha son of Ahijah, because you have aroused my anger and have caused Israel to sin.’(I)
23 “And also concerning Jezebel the Lord says: ‘Dogs(J) will devour Jezebel by the wall of[b] Jezreel.’
24 “Dogs(K) will eat those belonging to Ahab who die in the city, and the birds(L) will feed on those who die in the country.”
