¹⁰ As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take ^(A)the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

³² And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of ^(A)Gideon, ^(B)Barak, ^(C)Samson, ^(D)Jephthah, of ^(E)David and ^(F)Samuel and the prophets— ³³ who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, ^(G)stopped the mouths of lions, ^34 (H)quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, ^(I)became mighty in war, ^(J)put foreign armies to flight. ^35 (K)Women received back their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, so that they might rise again to a better life. ³⁶ Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even ^(L)chains and imprisonment. ^37 (M)They were stoned, they were sawn in two,^{[a] (N)}they were killed with the sword. ^(O)They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated— ³⁸ of whom the world was not worthy—^(P)wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

^52 (A)Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of ^(B)the Righteous One, ^(C)whom you have now betrayed and murdered,

^11 (A)“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely ^(B)on my account. ^12 (C)Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for ^(D)so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

¹⁴ For you, brothers, ^(A)became imitators of ^(B)the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea. For ^(C)you suffered the same things from your own countrymen ^(D)as they did from the Jews,^{[a] 15 (E)}who killed both the Lord Jesus and ^(F)the prophets, and drove us out, and displease God and ^(G)oppose all mankind

^21 (A)whom heaven must receive until the time for ^(B)restoring all the things about which ^(C)God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.

⁷ Remember ^(A)your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and ^(B)imitate their faith.

^23 (A)Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for ^(B)so their fathers did to the prophets.

^34 (A)O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that ^(B)kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! ^(C)How often would I have ^(D)gathered ^(E)your children together ^(F)as a hen gathers her brood ^(G)under her wings, and ^(H)you were not willing!
