Pride Promotes Strife

4 Where do ^[a]wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure ^(A)that war in your members?

Living Before the World

¹¹ Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts ^(A)which war against the soul,

¹⁷ For ^(A)the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, ^(B)so that you do not do the things that you wish.

²³ But ^(A)I see another law in ^(B)my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

⁷ Because ^(A)the ^[a]carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, ^(B)nor indeed can be.

Do Not Love the World

^15 (A)Do not love the world or the things in the world. ^(B)If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. ¹⁶ For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, ^(C)the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. ¹⁷ And ^(D)the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

¹⁴ But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.

Apostates Predicted

¹⁶ These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they ^(A)mouth great swelling words, ^(B)flattering people to gain advantage. ^17 (C)But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ: ¹⁸ how they told you that ^(D)there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts.
