12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.

A Tree and Its Fruit

43 “For (A)no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44 for (B)each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.

16 You will recognize them (A)by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, (B)every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 (C)Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them (D)by their fruits.

16 (A)If the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, so is the whole lump, and if the root is holy, so are the branches.

17 But if (B)some of the branches were broken off, and you, (C)although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root[a] of the olive tree, 18 do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you.

He dug it and cleared it of stones,
    and planted it with (A)choice vines;
he built a watchtower in the midst of it,
    and hewed out a wine vat in it;
and (B)he looked for it to yield grapes,
    but it yielded wild grapes.

And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem
    and men of Judah,
judge between me and my vineyard.
(C)What more was there to do for my vineyard,
    that I have not done in it?
(D)When I looked for it to yield grapes,
    why did it yield wild grapes?

And he said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into (A)the Arabah, and enters the sea;[a] when the water flows into (B)the sea, the water will become fresh.[b] And wherever the river goes,[c] every living creature that swarms will live, and there will be very many fish. For this water goes there, that the waters of the sea[d] may become fresh; so everything will live where the river goes. 10 Fishermen will stand beside the sea. From (C)Engedi to (D)Eneglaim it will be a place for the spreading of nets. Its fish will be of very many kinds, like the fish of (E)the Great Sea.[e] 11 But its swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they are to be left for salt.

19 Now the men of the city said to Elisha, “Behold, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord sees, but the water is bad, and the land is unfruitful.” 20 He said, “Bring me a new bowl, and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him. 21 Then he went to the spring of water and (A)threw salt in it and said, “Thus says the Lord, I have healed this water; from now on neither death nor miscarriage shall come from it.” 22 So the water has been healed to this day, according to the word that Elisha spoke.

23 When they came to (A)Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter; therefore it was named Marah.[a] 24 And the people (B)grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” 25 And he (C)cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log,[b] and he (D)threw it into the water, and the water became sweet.

There the Lord[c] made for them a statute and a rule, and there he (E)tested them,
