Taming the Tongue

3 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters, for you know that we who teach will face stricter judgment.^(A)

⁷ desiring to be teachers of the law without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make assertions.

⁴⁷ That slave who knew what his master wanted but did not prepare himself or do what was wanted will receive a severe beating.^{(A) 48} But the one who did not know and did what deserved a beating will receive a light beating. From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required, and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded.^(B)

³ Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock.^(A)

²⁸ And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues.^(A)

¹³ “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not go in yourselves, and when others are going in you stop them.^[a](A)

²⁹ For all who eat and drink^[a] without discerning the body^[b] eat and drink judgment against themselves. ³⁰ For this reason many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.^{[c] 31} But if we judged ourselves, we would not be judged.^{(A) 32} But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined^[d] so that we may not be condemned along with the world.^(B)

⁸ But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers and sisters.^{(A) 9} And call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father, the one in heaven.^{(B) 10} Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Messiah.^[a]

⁷ For this I was appointed a herald and an apostle (I am telling the truth;^[a] I am not lying), a teacher of the gentiles in faith and truth.^(A)

²⁰ a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth,^{(A) 21} you, then, who teach others, will you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?^(B)
