²¹ Was not Abraham our father justified by works ^(A)when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?

¹⁶ and said: ^(A)“By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son— ¹⁷ blessing I will ^(B)bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants ^(C)as the stars of the heaven ^(D)and as the sand which is on the seashore; and ^(E)your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. ^18 (F)In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, ^(G)because you have obeyed My voice.”

⁹ Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and ^(A)laid him on the altar, upon the wood. ¹⁰ And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

¹¹ But the ^(B)Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!”

So he said, “Here I am.”

¹² And He said, ^(C)“Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for ^(D)now I know that you fear God, since you have not ^(E)withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

³⁹ They answered and said to Him, ^(A)“Abraham is our father.”

Jesus said to them, ^(B)“If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham.

³⁷ For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

²⁴ You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.

¹⁸ But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” ^(A)Show me your faith without ^[a]your works, ^(B)and I will show you my faith by ^[b]my works.

¹⁶ Therefore it is of faith that it might be ^(A)according to grace, ^(B)so that the promise might be ^[a]sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, ^(C)who is the father of us all

¹² and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of the faith which our father ^(A)Abraham had while still uncircumcised.
