Nikodém navštěvuje v noci Ježíše

3 Jedním z předních Židů byl Nikodém, člen nejvyšší židovské rady. Patřil do skupiny farizejů, kteří přísně dodržovali všechny náboženské předpisy. ²Ten jedné noci vyhledal Ježíše a řekl mu: „Mistře, víme, že jsi učitel poslaný od Boha. Kdyby za tebou nestál sám Bůh, nemohl bys dělat takové zázraky, jaké jsi nám ukázal.“ ³Ježíš mu řekl: „Víš, na čem záleží? Na tom, aby se člověk znovu narodil, protože jinak se nestane občanem Božího království.“ ⁴„Znovu se narodit v mém věku?“ podivil se Nikodém. „Cožpak se někdo může vrátit do matčina těla a narodit se podruhé?“

⁵Ježíš vysvětloval: „Jestliže se s člověkem nestane zásadní proměna a není na něm patrný nový život z Ducha a jestliže není na znamení toho pokřtěn, nemůže vstoupit do Božího království. ⁶Život zrozený z člověka je tělesný. Teprve Boží Duch v člověku probouzí duchovní život. ⁷Nediv se mým slovům, že se musíte znovu narodit. ⁸Ovšem s Duchem svatým je to jako s větrem: Nemůžeš ho ovládat, ale pozoruješ jeho účinky. Tak se člověk znovu narodí z Ducha.“ ⁹Nikodém se zeptal: „Jak toho všeho dosáhnu?“

¹⁰„Jsi učitelem Božího národa a toto nevíš?“ podivil se Ježíš. ¹¹„Věř mi, že mluvím o tom, co vím, a svědčím o tom, co jsem viděl. Vy ovšem moje slova neberete vážně. ¹²Když nechápete to, co se týká člověka, jak porozumíte tomu, co se týká Boha? ¹³Nikdo z lidí vám nemůže podat svědectví jako já, vždyť jsem přišel od Boha. ¹⁴Vzpomínáš si, co Izraelcům zachránilo život na poušti, kde je ohrožovali jedovatí hadi? Jak Mojžíš vyzvedl na sloup bronzového hada, a kdo na něj pohlédl s vírou, zachránil si život? Tak i já musím být vyzdvižen na kříž.

¹⁵Každý, kdo ve mne uvěří, ujde smrti a narodí se pro věčnost. ¹⁶Vždyť Bůh tak miloval svět, že dal svého jediného Syna, aby každý, kdo v něho uvěří, unikl záhubě a získal věčný život. ¹⁷Bůh svého Syna neposlal proto, aby svět odsoudil, ale zachránil. ¹⁸Kdo v něho věří, unikne odsouzení. Kdo však v něho nevěří, odsuzuje sám sebe, protože odmítá milost nabízenou samým Bohem. ¹⁹Pro takové lidi je osudné, že na svět přišlo světlo, ale oni se nechtějí vzdát tmy, protože doufají, že ta zakryje jejich viny. ²⁰Zlé činy dělá člověk potmě, aby to nikdo nevěděl. Bojí se světla, aby nebyl odhalen. ²¹Kdo se však řídí Boží pravdou, tíhne ke světlu, aby věděl, zda jsou jeho činy v souladu s Boží vůlí.“

Jan Křtitel znovu představuje Ježíše

²²Potom Ježíš odešel se svými učedníky na judský venkov, aby tam s nimi mohl v klidu pobývat a aby křtil.

^23-24Také Jan Křtitel, který byl v té době ještě na svobodě, křtil v Ainonu nedaleko Salimu, kde bylo mnoho vody. Četní lidé se tam dali od Jana pokřtít. ²⁵Někteří Židé se dohadovali s Janovými učedníky, kdo má právo křtít. ²⁶Ti se obrátili na svého učitele: „Mistře, ten, kterého jsi označil za Mesiáše, také křtí a všichni teď chodí k němu.“

²⁷Jan jim řekl: „Člověk sám si nemůže přisvojit žádnou duchovní moc, pokud mu není dána od Boha. ²⁸Vy sami jste svědky, že jsem prohlásil: ‚On je Bohem poslaný Mesiáš a já mu jen připravuji cestu.‘ ^29-30Nevěsta přece patří ženichovi. Jeho přítel je také na svatbě, ale raduje se z ženichova štěstí. To je právě moje radost. Jeho hvězda vychází a já chci, aby jasně zářila, a nechci jí zaclánět. ³¹Protože Ježíš přišel z nebe, převyšuje nás všechny. My lidé mluvíme jen o tom, co jsme prožili na zemi. ³²On svědčí o tom, co viděl v nebi, a přece ho tak málo lidí přijímá. ³³Kdo mu uvěří, dává za pravdu Bohu. Ježíš totiž mluví Boží slova z Božího pověření. ³⁴Bůh jej k tomu také plně uschopnil svým Duchem. ³⁵Vždyť Otec miluje Syna a svěřuje mu všechno. ³⁶Proto, kdo věří Synu, má věčný život. Kdo mu nedůvěřuje, místo života ho stíhá Boží hněv.“

You Must Be Born Again

3 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named ^(A)Nicodemus, a ^(B)ruler of the Jews; ²this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “^(C)Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these ^[a]^(D)signs that You do unless ^(E)God is with him.” ³Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one ^(F)is born ^[b]again he cannot see ^(G)the kingdom of God.”

⁴Nicodemus *said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” ⁵Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of ^(H)water and the Spirit he cannot enter into ^(I)the kingdom of God. ⁶^(J)That which has been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which has been born of the Spirit is spirit. ⁷Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born ^[c]again.’ ⁸^(K)The wind blows where it wishes and you hear its sound, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who has been born of the Spirit.”

⁹Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?” ¹⁰Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you ^(L)the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things? ¹¹Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(M)we speak of what we know and ^(N)bear witness of what we have seen, and ^(O)you do not accept our witness. ¹²If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? ¹³^(P)And no one has ascended into heaven, but ^(Q)He who descended from heaven, ^(R)the Son of Man. ¹⁴And as ^(S)Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must ^(T)the Son of Man ^(U)be lifted up; ¹⁵so that whoever believes will ^(V)in Him have eternal life.

¹⁶“For God ^[d]so ^(W)loved the world, that He ^(X)gave His ^[e]^(Y)only begotten Son, that whoever ^(Z)believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. ¹⁷For God ^(AA)did not send the Son into the world ^(AB)to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. ¹⁸^(AC)He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of ^(AD)the ^[f]only begotten Son of God. ¹⁹And this is the judgment, that ^(AE)the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for ^(AF)their deeds were evil. ²⁰^(AG)For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light lest his deeds be exposed. ²¹But he who ^(AH)practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been done by God.”

²²After these things Jesus and His ^(AI)disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He was spending time with them and ^(AJ)baptizing. ²³And John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there; and people were coming and were being baptized— ²⁴for ^(AK)John had not yet been thrown into prison.

²⁵Therefore there arose a debate between John’s disciples and a Jew about ^(AL)purification. ²⁶And they came to John and said to him, “^(AM)Rabbi, He who was with you ^(AN)beyond the Jordan, to whom you ^(AO)have borne witness, behold, He is baptizing and all are coming to Him.” ²⁷John answered and said, “^(AP)A man can receive nothing unless it ^(AQ)has been given him from heaven. ²⁸You yourselves ^[g]are my witnesses that I said, ‘^(AR)I am not the ^[h]Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent ahead of Him.’ ²⁹He who has the bride is ^(AS)the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. So this ^(AT)joy of mine has been made full. ³⁰He must increase, but I must decrease.

³¹“^(AU)He who comes from above is above all, ^(AV)he who is of the earth is from the earth and speaks of the earth. ^(AW)He who comes from heaven is above all. ³²What He has seen and heard, of that He ^(AX)bears witness; and ^(AY)no one receives His witness. ³³He who has received His witness ^(AZ)has set his seal to this, that God is true. ³⁴For He whom God has ^(BA)sent speaks the words of God; ^[i]^(BB)for He gives the Spirit without measure. ³⁵^(BC)The Father loves the Son and ^(BD)has given all things into His hand. ³⁶He who ^(BE)believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who ^(BF)does not ^[j]obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
