Humility Cures Worldliness

⁷ Therefore submit to God. ^(A)Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

⁸ Be ^[a]sober, be ^[b]vigilant; ^[c]because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. ⁹ Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.

^27 (A)nor give ^[a]place to the devil.

^11 (A)Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the ^[a]wiles of the devil. ¹² For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against ^(B)principalities, against powers, against ^(C)the rulers of ^[b]the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

⁶ Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time,

² being ^[a]tempted for forty days by the devil. And ^(A)in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.

³ And the devil said to Him, “If You are ^(B)the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”

⁴ But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ^(C)‘Man shall not live by bread alone, ^[b]but by every word of God.’ ”

^5 [c]Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. ⁶ And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for ^(D)this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. ⁷ Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”

⁸ And Jesus answered and said to him, ^[d]“Get behind Me, Satan! ^[e]For it is written, ^(E)‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”

^9 (F)Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. ¹⁰ For it is written:

¹¹ and,

¹² And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, ^(I)‘You shall not ^[f]tempt the Lord your God.’ ”

¹³ Now when the devil had ended every ^[g]temptation, he departed from Him ^(J)until an opportune time.

³ Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

⁴ But He answered and said, “It is written, ^(A)‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”

⁵ Then the devil took Him up ^(B)into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, ⁶ and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:

and,

⁷ Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ^(E)‘You shall not ^[a]tempt the Lord your God.’ ”

⁸ Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and ^(F)showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. ⁹ And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”

¹⁰ Then Jesus said to him, ^[b]“Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ^(G)‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”

¹¹ Then the devil ^(H)left Him, and behold, ^(I)angels came and ministered to Him.

⁹ Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to ^(A)the Father of spirits and live?

³ For they being ignorant of ^(A)God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own ^(B)righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.
