You adulterous people![a] Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? So whoever wants to be the friend of the world becomes the enemy of God.(A) Or do you think it’s without reason that the Scripture says: The spirit he made to dwell in us envies intensely?[b](B)

But he gives greater grace. Therefore he says:

God resists the proud
but gives grace to the humble.[c](C)

Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.(D) Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.(E) Be miserable and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.(F) 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

  2. 4:5 Or Scripture says: He jealously yearns for the spirit he made to live in us?, or Scripture says: The Spirit he made to dwell in us longs jealously?
  3. 4:6 Pr 3:34

You adulterers![a] Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God. Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning? They say that God is passionate that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to him.[b] And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say,

“God opposes the proud
but gives grace to the humble.”[c]

So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.

(A)You adulterous people![a] Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? (B)Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit (C)that he has made to dwell in us”? But (D)he gives more grace. Therefore it says, (E)“God opposes the proud but (F)gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. (G)Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (H)Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. (I)Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and (J)purify your hearts, (K)you double-minded. (L)Be wretched and mourn and weep. 1. James 4:4 Or You adulteresses!

You adulterous(A) people,[a] don’t you know that friendship with the world(B) means enmity against God?(C) Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.(D) Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us[b]?(E) But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:

“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”[c](F)

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil,(G) and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you.(H) Wash your hands,(I) you sinners, and purify your hearts,(J) you double-minded.(K) Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.(L) 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.(M)
