James 4:4-10
English Standard Version
4 (A)You adulterous people![a] Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? (B)Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit (C)that he has made to dwell in us”? 6 But (D)he gives more grace. Therefore it says, (E)“God opposes the proud but (F)gives grace to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. (G)Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 (H)Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. (I)Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and (J)purify your hearts, (K)you double-minded. 9 (L)Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 (M)Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

Job 2:7-13
English Standard Version
7 So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and struck Job with loathsome (A)sores from (B)the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. 8 And he took (C)a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself while he sat in (D)the ashes.
9 Then his wife said to him, “Do you still (E)hold fast your integrity? (F)Curse God and die.” 10 But he said to her, “You speak as one of the (G)foolish women would speak. (H)Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?”[a] (I)In all this Job did not (J)sin with his lips.
Job's Three Friends
11 Now when Job's three (K)friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, they came each from his own place, Eliphaz (L)the Temanite, Bildad (M)the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They made an appointment together to come to (N)show him sympathy and comfort him. 12 And when they saw him from a distance, they did not recognize him. And they raised their voices and wept, and they (O)tore their robes and sprinkled (P)dust on their heads toward heaven. 13 And they sat with him on the ground (Q)seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his suffering was very great.
