4 Whence come wars and whence come fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your pleasures that war in your members? ² Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and ^[a]covet, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war; ye have not, because ye ask not. ³ Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may spend it in your pleasures. ⁴ Ye ^[b]adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore would be a friend of the world maketh himself an enemy of God. ⁵ Or think ye that the scripture ^[c]speaketh in vain? ^[d]Doth the spirit which ^[e]he made to dwell in us long unto envying? ⁶ But he giveth ^[f]more grace. Wherefore the scripture saith, ^[g]God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. ⁷ Be subject therefore unto God; but resist the devil, and he will flee from you. ⁸ Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye doubleminded. ⁹ Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. ¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall exalt you.

¹¹ Speak not one against another, brethren. He that speaketh against a brother, or judgeth his brother, speaketh against the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judgest the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. ¹² One only is the lawgiver and judge, even he who is able to save and to destroy: but who art thou that judgest thy neighbor?

¹³ Come now, ye that say, To-day or to-morrow we will go into this city, and spend a year there, and trade, and get gain: ¹⁴ whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What is your life? For ye are a vapor that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. ^15 [h]For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall both live, and do this or that. ¹⁶ But now ye glory in your vauntings: all such glorying is evil. ¹⁷ To him therefore that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

27 The word of Jehovah came again unto me, saying, ² And thou, son of man, take up a lamentation over Tyre; ³ and say unto Tyre, O thou that dwellest at the ^[a]entry of the sea, that art the merchant of the peoples unto many isles, thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Thou, O Tyre, hast said, I am perfect in beauty. ⁴ Thy borders are in the heart of the seas; thy builders have perfected thy beauty. ⁵ They have ^[b]made all thy planks of fir-trees from Senir; they have taken a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for thee. ⁶ Of the oaks of Bashan have they made thine oars; they have made thy ^[c]benches of ivory inlaid in boxwood, from the isles of Kittim. ⁷ Of fine linen with broidered work from Egypt was thy sail, that it might be to thee for an ensign; blue and purple from the isles of Elishah was thine awning. ⁸ The inhabitants of Sidon and Arvad were thy rowers: thy wise men, O Tyre, were in thee, they were thy pilots. ⁹ The ^[d]old men of Gebal and the wise men thereof were in thee thy calkers: all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in thee to ^[e]deal in thy merchandise. ¹⁰ Persia and Lud and Put were in thine army, thy men of war: they hanged the shield and helmet in thee; they set forth thy comeliness. ¹¹ The men of Arvad with thine army were upon thy walls round about, and valorous men were in thy towers; they hanged their shields upon thy walls round about; they have perfected thy beauty.

¹² Tarshish was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of all kinds of riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded for thy wares. ¹³ Javan, Tubal, and Meshech, they were thy traffickers; they traded the persons of men and vessels of brass for thy merchandise. ¹⁴ They of the house of Togarmah traded for thy wares with horses and war-horses and mules. ¹⁵ The men of Dedan were thy traffickers; many isles were the mart of thy hand: they brought thee ^[f]in exchange horns of ivory and ebony. ¹⁶ Syria was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of thy handiworks: they traded for thy wares with ^[g]emeralds, purple, and broidered work, and fine linen, and coral, and rubies. ¹⁷ Judah, and the land of Israel, they were thy traffickers: they traded for thy merchandise wheat of Minnith, and ^[h]pannag, and honey, and oil, and balm. ¹⁸ Damascus was thy merchant for the multitude of thy handiworks, by reason of the multitude of all kinds of riches, with the wine of Helbon, and white wool. ¹⁹ Vedan and Javan traded ^[i]with yarn for thy wares: ^[j]bright iron, cassia, and calamus, were among thy merchandise. ²⁰ Dedan was thy trafficker in precious cloths for riding. ²¹ Arabia, and all the princes of Kedar, they were the merchants of thy hand; in lambs, and rams, and goats, in these were they thy merchants. ²² The traffickers of Sheba and Raamah, they were thy traffickers; they traded for thy wares with the chief of all spices, and with all precious stones, and gold. ²³ Haran and Canneh and Eden, the traffickers of Sheba, Asshur and Chilmad, were thy traffickers. ²⁴ These were thy traffickers in choice wares, in ^[k]wrappings of blue and broidered work, and in chests of rich apparel, bound with cords and made of cedar, among thy merchandise. ²⁵ The ships of Tarshish were thy caravans for thy merchandise: and thou wast replenished, and made very glorious in the heart of the seas.

²⁶ Thy rowers have brought thee into great waters: the east wind hath broken thee in the heart of the seas. ²⁷ Thy riches, and thy wares, thy merchandise, thy mariners, and thy pilots, thy calkers, and the ^[l]dealers in thy merchandise, and all thy men of war, that are in thee, ^[m]with all thy company which is in the midst of thee, shall fall into the heart of the seas in the day of thy ruin. ²⁸ At the sound of the cry of thy pilots the ^[n]suburbs shall shake. ²⁹ And all that handle the oar, the mariners, and all the pilots of the sea, shall come down from their ships; they shall stand upon the land, ³⁰ and shall cause their voice to be heard over thee, and shall cry bitterly, and shall cast up dust upon their heads; they shall wallow themselves in the ashes: ³¹ and they shall make themselves bald for thee, and gird them with sackcloth, and they shall weep for thee in bitterness of soul with bitter mourning. ³² And in their wailing they shall take up a lamentation for thee, and lament over thee, saying, Who is there like Tyre, like her that is brought to silence in the midst of the sea? ³³ When thy wares went forth out of the seas, thou filledst many peoples; thou didst enrich the kings of the earth with the multitude of thy riches and of thy merchandise. ³⁴ In the time that thou wast broken by the seas in the depths of the waters, thy merchandise and all thy company did fall in the midst of thee. ³⁵ All the inhabitants of the isles are astonished at thee, and their kings are horribly afraid; they are troubled in their countenance. ³⁶ The merchants among the peoples hiss at thee; thou art become ^[o]a terror, and thou shalt nevermore have any being.

28 The word of Jehovah came again unto me, saying, ² Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyre, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Because thy heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a god, I sit in the seat of God, in the ^[a]midst of the seas; yet thou art man, and not God, though thou didst set thy heart as the heart of God;— ³ behold, thou art wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that is hidden from thee; ⁴ by thy wisdom and by thine understanding thou hast gotten thee ^[b]riches, and hast gotten gold and silver into thy treasures; ⁵ by thy great wisdom and by thy traffic hast thou increased thy ^[c]riches, and thy heart is lifted up because of thy ^[d]riches;— ⁶ therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Because thou hast set thy heart as the heart of God, ⁷ therefore, behold, I will bring strangers upon thee, the terrible of the nations; and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of thy wisdom, and they shall ^[e]defile thy brightness. ⁸ They shall bring thee down to the pit; and thou shalt die the death of them that are slain, in the heart of the seas. ⁹ Wilt thou yet say before him that slayeth thee, I am God? but thou art man, and not God, in the hand of him that ^[f]woundeth thee. ¹⁰ Thou shalt die the death of the uncircumcised by the hand of strangers: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord Jehovah.

¹¹ Moreover the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying, ¹² Son of man, take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Thou sealest up the ^[g]sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. ¹³ Thou wast in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the ^[h]sardius, the topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the ^[i]emerald, and the ^[j]carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was in thee; in the day that thou wast created they were prepared. ¹⁴ Thou wast the anointed cherub that covereth: and I set thee, so that thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. ¹⁵ Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till unrighteousness was found in thee. ¹⁶ By the abundance of thy traffic they filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore have I cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God; and I have destroyed thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. ¹⁷ Thy heart was lifted up because of thy beauty; thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I have cast thee to the ground; I have laid thee before kings, that they may behold thee. ¹⁸ By the multitude of thine iniquities, in the unrighteousness of thy traffic, thou hast profaned thy sanctuaries; therefore have I brought forth a fire from the midst of thee; it hath devoured thee, and I have turned thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. ¹⁹ All they that know thee among the peoples shall be astonished at thee: thou art become ^[k]a terror, and thou shalt nevermore have any being.

²⁰ And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying, ²¹ Son of man, set thy face toward Sidon, and prophesy against it, ²² and say, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I am against thee, O Sidon; and I will be glorified in the midst of thee; and they shall know that I am Jehovah, when I shall have executed judgments in her, and shall be sanctified in her. ²³ For I will send pestilence into her, and blood into her streets; and the wounded shall ^[l]fall in the midst of her, with the sword upon her on every side; and they shall know that I am Jehovah. ²⁴ And there shall be no more a pricking brier unto the house of Israel, nor a hurting thorn of any that are round about them, that did despite unto them; and they shall know that I am the Lord Jehovah.

²⁵ Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: When I shall have gathered the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and shall be sanctified in them in the sight of the nations, then shall they dwell in their own land which I gave to my servant Jacob. ²⁶ And they shall dwell securely therein; yea, they shall build houses, and plant vineyards, and shall dwell securely, when I have executed judgments upon all those that do them despite round about them; and they shall know that I am Jehovah their God.
