The Untamable Tongue

My brethren, (A)let not many of you become teachers, (B)knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment. For (C)we all stumble in many things. (D)If anyone does not stumble in word, (E)he is a [a]perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. [b]Indeed, (F)we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so (G)the tongue is a little member and (H)boasts great things.

See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And (I)the tongue is a fire, a world of [c]iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it (J)defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of [d]nature; and it is set on fire by [e]hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, (K)full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made (L)in the [f]similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? 12 Can a (M)fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? [g]Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.

Heavenly Versus Demonic Wisdom

13 (N)Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have (O)bitter envy and [h]self-seeking in your hearts, (P)do not boast and lie against the truth. 15 (Q)This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. 16 For (R)where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. 17 But (S)the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, (T)without partiality (U)and without hypocrisy. 18 (V)Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. 14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. 16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

The Tongue

Though they are so great and are driven by fierce winds, yet they are directed with a very small rudder wherever the captain pleases. Even so, the tongue is a little part of the body and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles. The tongue is a fire, a world of evil. The tongue is among the parts of the body, defiling the whole body, and setting the course of nature on fire, and it is set on fire by hell.

All kinds of beasts, and birds, and serpents, and things in the sea are tamed or have been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. The Wisdom From Above

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show his works by his good life in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, do not boast and do not lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom descends not from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, and devilish. 16 For where there is envying and strife, there is confusion and every evil work.

17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

La lengua

Hermanos míos, no os hagáis maestros muchos de vosotros, sabiendo que recibiremos mayor condenación. Porque todos ofendemos muchas veces. Si alguno no ofende en palabra, este es varón perfecto, capaz también de refrenar todo el cuerpo. He aquí nosotros ponemos freno en la boca de los caballos para que nos obedezcan, y dirigimos así todo su cuerpo. Mirad también las naves; aunque tan grandes, y llevadas de impetuosos vientos, son gobernadas con un muy pequeño timón por donde el que las gobierna quiere. Así también la lengua es un miembro pequeño, pero se jacta de grandes cosas. He aquí, ¡cuán grande bosque enciende un pequeño fuego!

Y la lengua es un fuego, un mundo de maldad. La lengua está puesta entre nuestros miembros, y contamina todo el cuerpo, e inflama la rueda de la creación, y ella misma es inflamada por el infierno. Porque toda naturaleza de bestias, y de aves, y de serpientes, y de seres del mar, se doma y ha sido domada por la naturaleza humana; pero ningún hombre puede domar la lengua, que es un mal que no puede ser refrenado, llena de veneno mortal. Con ella bendecimos al Dios y Padre, y con ella maldecimos a los hombres, que están hechos a la semejanza de Dios.(A) 10 De una misma boca proceden bendición y maldición. Hermanos míos, esto no debe ser así. 11 ¿Acaso alguna fuente echa por una misma abertura agua dulce y amarga? 12 Hermanos míos, ¿puede acaso la higuera producir aceitunas, o la vid higos? Así también ninguna fuente puede dar agua salada y dulce.

La sabiduría de lo alto

13 ¿Quién es sabio y entendido entre vosotros? Muestre por la buena conducta sus obras en sabia mansedumbre. 14 Pero si tenéis celos amargos y contención en vuestro corazón, no os jactéis, ni mintáis contra la verdad; 15 porque esta sabiduría no es la que desciende de lo alto, sino terrenal, animal, diabólica. 16 Porque donde hay celos y contención, allí hay perturbación y toda obra perversa. 17 Pero la sabiduría que es de lo alto es primeramente pura, después pacífica, amable, benigna, llena de misericordia y de buenos frutos, sin incertidumbre ni hipocresía. 18 Y el fruto de justicia se siembra en paz para aquellos que hacen la paz.
