¹⁸ But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” ^(A)Show me your faith without ^[a]your works, ^(B)and I will show you my faith by ^[b]my works. ¹⁹ You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! ²⁰ But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is ^[c]dead?

²⁶ For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Faith at the Dawn of History^(A)

⁴ By faith ^(B)Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still ^(C)speaks.

⁵ By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, ^(D)“and was not found, because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. ⁶ But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

⁷ By faith ^(E)Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, ^(F)prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of ^(G)the righteousness which is according to faith.

Faithful Abraham^(H)

⁸ By faith ^(I)Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.

¹¹ By faith ^(A)Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and ^(B)she^[a] bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him ^(C)faithful who had promised.

²⁴ By faith ^(A)Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, ²⁵ choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the ^[a]passing pleasures of sin, ²⁶ esteeming ^(B)the ^[b]reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures ^[c]in Egypt; for he looked to the ^(C)reward.

²⁷ By faith ^(D)he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible. ²⁸ By faith ^(E)he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, lest he who destroyed the firstborn should touch them.

²⁹ By faith ^(F)they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land, whereas the Egyptians, attempting to do so, were drowned.

²⁴ And ^(A)Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God ^(B)took him.

Promises to Abram^(A)

12 Now the ^(B)Lord had said to Abram:

⁷ Therefore ^[a]purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed ^(A)Christ, our ^(B)Passover, was sacrificed ^[b]for us.
