For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” (A)while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become (B)judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers, (C)has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be (D)rich in faith and heirs of (E)the kingdom, (F)which he has promised to those who love him? But you (G)have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who (H)drag you (I)into court? Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable (J)name by which you were called?

If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, (K)“You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. But if you (L)show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point (M)has become guilty of all of it. 11 For he who said, (N)“Do not commit adultery,” also said, (O)“Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. 12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under (P)the law of liberty. 13 For (Q)judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges(A) with evil thoughts?

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters:(B) Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world(C) to be rich in faith(D) and to inherit the kingdom(E) he promised those who love him?(F) But you have dishonored the poor.(G) Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?(H) Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?

If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,”[a](I) you are doing right. But if you show favoritism,(J) you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.(K) 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles(L) at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.(M) 11 For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,”[b](N) also said, “You shall not murder.”[c](O) If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.

12 Speak and act as those who are going to be judged(P) by the law that gives freedom,(Q) 13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful.(R) Mercy triumphs over judgment.

Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet (A)it boasts of great things.

How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And (B)the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, (C)staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life,[a] and set on fire by hell.[b] For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, (D)full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people (E)who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers,[c] these things ought not to be so.

Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.(A) Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire,(B) a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body,(C) sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.(D)

All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.(E)

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.(F) 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.
