12 (A)Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has [a]been approved, he will receive (B)the crown of life which the Lord (C)has promised to those who (D)love Him. 13 No one is to say when he is tempted, “(E)I am being tempted [b]by God”; for God cannot be tempted [c]by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then (F)when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and (G)sin, when it has run its course, brings forth death. 16 (H)Do not be [d]deceived, (I)my beloved brothers and sisters. 17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is (J)from above, coming down from (K)the Father of lights, (L)with whom there is no variation or [e]shifting shadow. 18 In the exercise of (M)His will He (N)gave us birth by (O)the word of truth, so that we would be [f]a kind of (P)first fruits [g]among His creatures.

19 [h](Q)You know this, (R)my beloved brothers and sisters. Now everyone must be quick to hear, (S)slow to speak, and (T)slow to anger; 20 for a man’s (U)anger does not bring about the righteousness of God.

12 Blessed [happy, spiritually prosperous, favored by God] is the man who is steadfast under trial and perseveres when tempted; for when he has passed the test and been approved, he will receive the [victor’s] crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God” [for temptation does not originate from God, but from our own flaws]; for God cannot be tempted by [what is] evil, and He Himself tempts no one. 14 But each one is tempted when he is dragged away, enticed and baited [to commit sin] by his own [worldly] desire (lust, passion). 15 Then when the illicit desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin has run its course, it gives birth to death. 16 Do not be misled, my beloved brothers and sisters. 17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above; it comes down from the Father of lights [the Creator and Sustainer of the heavens], in whom there is no variation [no rising or setting] or shadow [a]cast by His turning [for He is perfect and never changes]. 18 It was of His own will that He gave us birth [as His children] by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits of His creatures [a prime example of what He created to be set apart to Himself—sanctified, made holy for His divine purposes].

19 Understand this, my beloved brothers and sisters. Let everyone be quick to hear [be a careful, thoughtful listener], slow to speak [a speaker of carefully chosen words and], slow to anger [patient, reflective, forgiving]; 20 for the [resentful, deep-seated] anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God [that standard of behavior which He requires from us].

12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial(A) because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life(B) that the Lord has promised to those who love him.(C)

13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own(D) evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;(E) and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.(F)

16 Don’t be deceived,(G) my dear brothers and sisters.(H) 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above,(I) coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights,(J) who does not change(K) like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth(L) through the word of truth,(M) that we might be a kind of firstfruits(N) of all he created.

Listening and Doing

19 My dear brothers and sisters,(O) take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak(P) and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger(Q) does not produce the righteousness that God desires.
