Powitanie
1 Jakub, sługa Boga i Pana Jezusa Chrystusa, do dwunastu pokoleń, żyjących na obczyźnie: Pozdrowienia!
Wiara i mądrość
2 Drodzy bracia, za najwyższą radość uważajcie te chwile, gdy jesteście poddawani przeróżnym próbom. 3 Wiedzcie, że takie doświadczanie waszej wiary kształtuje wytrwałość. 4 Wytrwałość natomiast niech was prowadzi do dzieła doskonałego, abyście byli doskonali, nienaganni i bez jakichkolwiek braków.
5 Jeśli komuś z was brak mądrości, niech prosi o nią Boga, który obdarza wszystkich szczodrze i bez wypominania — i mądrość będzie mu dana. 6 Niech jednak prosi z wiarą, porzuci wątpliwości, bo człowiek, który wątpi, przypomina falę morską, gnaną i miotaną przez wiatr. 7 Ktoś taki niech nie liczy, że coś od Pana otrzyma, 8 dlatego że on sam nie wie, czego chce, jest niestały w całym swoim postępowaniu.
9 Niech ubogi brat szczyci się swoim wywyższeniem. 10 Bogaty natomiast niech ma na względzie swoje poniżenie, ponieważ przeminie jak kwiat trawy. 11 Oto wzeszło słońce, przypiekło promieniami, wysuszyło trawę, jej kwiat opadł i piękno przepadło. Podobnie zwiędnie bogaty na drogach swego życia.
12 Szczęśliwy człowiek, który przechodzi przez próbę, bo gdy zostanie wypróbowany, otrzyma wieniec życia, który Bóg obiecał tym, którzy Go kochają. 13 Niech nikt, kuszony przez zło, nie mówi, że to Bóg go kusi. Bóg jest niepodatny na zło i sam nikogo nim nie doświadcza. 14 Źródłem pokus człowieka są jego własne żądze. To one go pociągają i nęcą. 15 Gdy żądza się rozwinie, rodzi grzech, a gdy grzech dojrzeje, rodzi śmierć.
16 Nie dajcie się zwieść, moi kochani bracia. 17 Całe dobro, którym można obdarzyć, i wszelki doskonały dar, pochodzą z góry, od Ojca światłości. W Nim nie ma żadnej zmienności ani cienia odmiany.[a] 18 Gdy zechciał, zrodził nas przez Słowo prawdy, by mieć w nas jakby pierwszy plon swoich stworzeń.
O pożytku słuchania
19 Wiedzcie,[b] moi kochani bracia, że każdy człowiek powinien być skory do słuchania, nieskory do mówienia i nieskory do gniewu. 20 Bo gniew człowieka nie służy sprawiedliwości Bożej. 21 Dlatego odrzućcie wszystko, co budzi odrazę, całą niepotrzebną złość, i z łagodnością przyjmijcie zasiane w was Słowo, które może zbawić wasze dusze.
22 Bądźcie także wykonawcami Słowa, a nie tylko słuchaczami, oszukującymi samych siebie. 23 Słuchacz Słowa, w przeciwieństwie do wykonawcy, przypomina człowieka, który przygląda się swojej twarzy w lustrze. 24 Przyjrzał się, odszedł i zaraz zapomniał, jak wygląda. 25 Kto natomiast wniknął w doskonałe prawo wolności i trwa w nim, ten nie jest słuchaczem, który zapomina. Jest twórcą dzieła. I w swoim działaniu będzie on szczęśliwy.
26 Jeśli ktoś sądzi, że jest bogobojny, lecz nie powściąga swego języka, to oszukuje swoje serce i jego bogobojność pozbawiona jest treści. 27 Czystą i nieskazitelną bogobojnością, w ocenie Boga Ojca, jest nieść pomoc sierotom i wdowom w ich ucisku i strzec się splamienia ze strony świata.

To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad:
Greetings.
Profiting from Trials
2 My brethren, (B)count it all joy (C)when you fall into various trials, 3 (D)knowing that the testing of your faith produces [a]patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be [b]perfect and complete, lacking nothing. 5 (E)If any of you lacks wisdom, (F)let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and (G)it will be given to him. 6 (H)But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is (I)a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
The Perspective of Rich and Poor
9 Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation, 10 but the rich in his humiliation, because (J)as a flower of the field he will pass away. 11 For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits.
Loving God Under Trials
12 (K)Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive (L)the crown of life (M)which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, (N)when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, (O)brings forth death.
16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17 (P)Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, (Q)with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. 18 (R)Of His own will He brought us forth by the (S)word of truth, (T)that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.
Qualities Needed in Trials
19 [c]So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, (U)slow to speak, (V)slow to wrath; 20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
Doers—Not Hearers Only
21 Therefore (W)lay aside all filthiness and [d]overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, (X)which is able to save your souls.
22 But (Y)be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For (Z)if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 25 But (AA)he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, (AB)this one will be blessed in what he does.
26 If anyone [e]among you thinks he is religious, and (AC)does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless. 27 (AD)Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: (AE)to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, (AF)and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
9 Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:
10 But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.
11 For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.
27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

Trials and Temptations
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds,(F) 3 because you know that the testing of your faith(G) produces perseverance.(H) 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature(I) and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God,(J) who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.(K) 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt,(L) because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded(M) and unstable(N) in all they do.
9 Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position.(O) 10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower.(P) 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat(Q) and withers(R) the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed.(S) In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.
12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial(T) because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life(U) that the Lord has promised to those who love him.(V)
13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own(W) evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;(X) and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.(Y)
16 Don’t be deceived,(Z) my dear brothers and sisters.(AA) 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above,(AB) coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights,(AC) who does not change(AD) like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth(AE) through the word of truth,(AF) that we might be a kind of firstfruits(AG) of all he created.
Listening and Doing
19 My dear brothers and sisters,(AH) take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak(AI) and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger(AJ) does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of(AK) all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you,(AL) which can save you.
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.(AM) 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom,(AN) and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.(AO)
26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues(AP) deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after(AQ) orphans and widows(AR) in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.(AS)

Testing of Your Faith
