2 Mina syskon, ni tror ju på vår förhärligade Herre Jesus Kristus, så favorisera ingen människa.
2 Tänk er att ni är samlade till gudstjänst, och in kommer en man med en guldring på fingret och klädd i fina kläder, likaså en fattig man i smutsiga kläder. 3 Om ni då genast fäster er blick på den finklädde och erbjuder honom den bästa platsen, medan någon säger till den fattige: ”Du kan stå där borta”, eller ”Sätt dig här på golvet bredvid mig”, 4 pågår det då inte en diskriminering bland er, och fäller ni inte orätta domar?
5 Lyssna på mig, mina kära syskon! Har inte Gud utvalt dem som är fattiga i världens ögon till att vara rika i tron och ärva det rike som han har lovat dem som älskar honom? 6 Ändå föraktar ni de fattiga. Är det inte de rika som förtrycker er och drar er inför domstol? 7 Är det inte de som hånar hans härliga namn, hans som kallade er?
8 Om ni följer den kungliga lagen,[a] den som enligt Skriften lyder: ”Du ska älska din medmänniska som dig själv”[b], då gör ni rätt. 9 Om ni favoriserar människor, så syndar ni och är enligt lagen skyldiga till att ha brutit mot den. 10 Den som håller hela lagen men bryter mot ett enda bud har brutit mot allt. 11 Han som sa: ”Du ska inte vara otrogen i ditt äktenskap” har ju också sagt: ”Du ska inte mörda.”[c] Så om du mördar någon har du brutit mot lagen, även om du inte har varit otrogen i ditt äktenskap.
12 Tala och handla som de som ska dömas efter frihetens lag. 13 Domen blir obarmhärtig för den som inte har visat barmhärtighet, medan barmhärtigheten triumferar över domen.
Tro utan handlingar är bara tomma ord
14 Mina syskon, vad är det för nytta med att säga att man tror om man inte omsätter sin tro i praktisk handling? Kan en sådan tro rädda någon? 15 Om en troende bror eller syster har varken mat eller kläder, 16 räcker det då med att säga till dem: ”Var lugna. Klä er varmt och ät ordentligt”, om ni inte ger dem vad de behöver?
17 Så är det alltså med tron. Om den inte omsätts i praktisk handling är den i sig själv död.
18 Nu kanske någon invänder: ”Har du tro, så har jag gärningar.” Visa[d] mig din tro utan gärningar, så kan jag utifrån mina gärningar visa dig min tro. 19 Du tror att det finns en Gud. Det är bra. Det tror till och med de onda andarna och darrar. 20 Inser du inte, du tanklösa människa, att tron är meningslös om den inte omsätts i praktisk handling?
21 Var inte vår förfader Abraham rättfärdig därför att han var villig att offra sin son Isak på altaret?[e] 22 Du ser att hans tro samverkade med hans gärningar, och hans tro fullkomnades i och med att den omsattes i praktisk handling. 23 Genom detta uppfylldes det som står i Skriften: ”Abraham trodde Gud, och därför räknades han som rättfärdig”[f] och kallades Guds vän[g]. 24 Ni ser alltså att människan blir rättfärdig på grund av sina handlingar och inte bara genom tro.
25 Så var det ju också med Rachav, den prostituerade kvinnan: hon blev rättfärdig genom sina handlingar när hon tog emot budbärarna i sitt hus och släppte ut dem en annan väg. 26 Liksom en kropp utan livsande är död, så är en tro som inte omsätts i praktisk handling död.

2 Supposez, en effet, qu'il entre dans votre assemblée un homme avec un anneau d'or et un habit magnifique, et qu'il y entre aussi un pauvre misérablement vêtu;

Prejudice and the Law of Love
2 My brothers and sisters,[a] do not show prejudice[b] if you possess faith[c] in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ.[d] 2 For if someone[e] comes into your assembly[f] wearing a gold ring and fine clothing, and a poor person enters in filthy clothes, 3 do you pay attention to the one who is finely dressed and say,[g] “You sit here in a good place,”[h] and to the poor person, “You stand over there,” or “Sit on the floor”?[i] 4 If so, have you not made distinctions[j] among yourselves and become judges with evil motives?[k] 5 Listen, my dear brothers and sisters![l] Did not God choose the poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor![m] Are not the rich oppressing you and dragging you into the courts? 7 Do they not blaspheme the good name of the one you belong to?[n] 8 But if you fulfill the royal law as expressed in this scripture,[o] “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,”[p] you are doing well. 9 But if you show prejudice, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as violators.[q] 10 For the one who obeys the whole law but fails[r] in one point has become guilty of all of it.[s] 11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,”[t] also said, “Do not murder.”[u] Now if you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a violator of the law. 12 Speak and act as those who will be judged by a law that gives freedom.[v] 13 For judgment is merciless for the one who has shown no mercy. But mercy triumphs over[w] judgment.
Faith and Works Together
14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters,[x] if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Can this kind of faith[y] save him?[z] 15 If a brother or sister[aa] is poorly clothed and lacks daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm and eat well,” but you do not give them what the body needs,[ab] what good is it? 17 So also faith, if it does not have works, is dead being by itself. 18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.”[ac] Show me your faith without works and I will show you faith by[ad] my works. 19 You believe that God is one; well and good.[ae] Even the demons believe that—and tremble with fear.[af]
20 But would you like evidence,[ag] you empty fellow,[ah] that faith without works is useless?[ai] 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 You see that his faith was working together with his works and his faith was perfected by works. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Now Abraham believed God and it was counted to him for righteousness,”[aj] and he was called God’s friend.[ak] 24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 And similarly, was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she welcomed the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

The reading of the majority is probably an assimilation to the statements in vv. 17 and 26, while P74’s reading picks up on κενέ (kene) earlier in the verse. The external evidence (B C* 323 945 1175 1243 1739 sa) for ἀργή is sufficient for authenticity; coupled with the strong internal evidence for the reading (if νεκρά were original, how would ἀργή have arisen here and not in vv. 17 or 26?), it is strongly preferred.

Favoritism Forbidden
2 My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious(A) Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism.(B) 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges(C) with evil thoughts?
5 Listen, my dear brothers and sisters:(D) Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world(E) to be rich in faith(F) and to inherit the kingdom(G) he promised those who love him?(H) 6 But you have dishonored the poor.(I) Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?(J) 7 Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?

18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”
Show me your faith without deeds,(Y) and I will show you my faith(Z) by my deeds.(AA) 19 You believe that there is one God.(AB) Good! Even the demons believe that(AC)—and shudder.
20 You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless[d]?(AD) 21 Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?(AE) 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together,(AF) and his faith was made complete by what he did.(AG) 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,”[e](AH) and he was called God’s friend.(AI) 24 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.
