The Northern Conquest

11 And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor heard these things, that he ^(A)sent to Jobab king of Madon, to the king ^(B)of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph, ²and to the kings who were from the north, in the mountains, in the plain south of ^(C)Chinneroth, in the lowland, and in the heights ^(D)of Dor on the west, ³to the Canaanites in the east and in the west, the ^(E)Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite in the mountains, ^(F)and the Hivite below ^(G)Hermon ^(H)in the land of Mizpah. ⁴So they went out, they and all their armies with them, as many people ^(I)as the sand that is on the seashore in multitude, with very many horses and chariots. ⁵And when all these kings had ^[a]met together, they came and camped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.

⁶But the Lord said to Joshua, ^(J)“Do not be afraid because of them, for tomorrow about this time I will deliver all of them slain before Israel. You shall ^(K)hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.” ⁷So Joshua and all the people of war with him came against them suddenly by the waters of Merom, and they attacked them. ⁸And the Lord delivered them into the hand of Israel, who defeated them and chased them to ^[b]Greater ^(L)Sidon, to the ^[c]Brook ^(M)Misrephoth, and to the Valley of Mizpah eastward; they attacked them until they left none of them remaining. ⁹So Joshua did to them as the Lord had told him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.

¹⁰Joshua turned back at that time and took Hazor, and struck its king with the sword; for Hazor was formerly the head of all those kingdoms. ¹¹And they struck all the people who were in it with the edge of the sword, ^(N)utterly destroying them. There was none left ^(O)breathing. Then he burned Hazor with fire.

¹²So all the cities of those kings, and all their kings, Joshua took and struck with the edge of the sword. He utterly destroyed them, ^(P)as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded. ¹³But as for the cities that stood on their ^[d]mounds, Israel burned none of them, except Hazor only, which Joshua burned. ¹⁴And all the ^(Q)spoil of these cities and the livestock, the children of Israel took as booty for themselves; but they struck every man with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them, and they left none breathing. ¹⁵^(R)As the Lord had commanded Moses His servant, so ^(S)Moses commanded Joshua, and ^(T)so Joshua did. ^[e]He left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.

Summary of Joshua’s Conquests

¹⁶Thus Joshua took all this land: ^(U)the mountain country, all the South, ^(V)all the land of Goshen, the lowland, and the Jordan ^[f]plain—the mountains of Israel and its lowlands, ¹⁷^(W)from ^[g]Mount Halak and the ascent to Seir, even as far as Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon. He captured ^(X)all their kings, and struck them down and killed them. ¹⁸Joshua made war a long time with all those kings. ¹⁹There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, except ^(Y)the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. All the others they took in battle. ²⁰For ^(Z)it was of the Lord ^[h]to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that He might utterly destroy them, and that they might receive no mercy, but that He might destroy them, ^(AA)as the Lord had commanded Moses.

²¹And at that time Joshua came and cut off ^(AB)the Anakim from the mountains: from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel; Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities. ²²None of the Anakim were left in the land of the children of Israel; they remained only ^(AC)in Gaza, in Gath, ^(AD)and in Ashdod.

²³So Joshua took the whole land, ^(AE)according to all that the Lord had said to Moses; and Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel ^(AF)according to their divisions by their tribes. Then the land ^(AG)rested from war.

The Kings Conquered by Moses^(AH)

12 These are the kings of the land whom the children of Israel defeated, and whose land they possessed on the other side of the Jordan toward the rising of the sun, ^(AI)from the River Arnon ^(AJ)to Mount Hermon, and all the eastern Jordan plain: ²One king was ^(AK)Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon and ruled half of Gilead, from Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon, from the middle of that river, even as far as the River Jabbok, which is the border of the Ammonites, ³and ^(AL)the eastern Jordan plain from the ^[i]Sea of Chinneroth as far as the ^[j]Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea), ^(AM)the road to Beth Jeshimoth, and ^[k]southward below ^(AN)the^[l] slopes of Pisgah. ⁴The other king was ^(AO)Og king of Bashan and his territory, who was of ^(AP)the remnant of the giants, ^(AQ)who dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei, ⁵and reigned over ^(AR)Mount Hermon, ^(AS)over Salcah, over all Bashan, ^(AT)as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maachathites, and over half of Gilead to the border of Sihon king of Heshbon.

⁶^(AU)These Moses the servant of the Lord and the children of Israel had conquered; and ^(AV)Moses the servant of the Lord had given it as a possession to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh.

The Kings Conquered by Joshua

Northern Kings Defeated

11 When Jabin^(A) king of Hazor^(B) heard of this, he sent word to Jobab king of Madon, to the kings of Shimron^(C) and Akshaph,^(D) ²and to the northern kings who were in the mountains, in the Arabah^(E) south of Kinnereth,^(F) in the western foothills and in Naphoth Dor^(G) on the west; ³to the Canaanites in the east and west; to the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites^(H) and Jebusites in the hill country;^(I) and to the Hivites^(J) below Hermon^(K) in the region of Mizpah.^(L) ⁴They came out with all their troops and a large number of horses and chariots—a huge army, as numerous as the sand on the seashore.^(M) ⁵All these kings joined forces^(N) and made camp together at the Waters of Merom^(O) to fight against Israel.

⁶The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, because by this time tomorrow I will hand^(P) all of them, slain, over to Israel. You are to hamstring^(Q) their horses and burn their chariots.”^(R)

⁷So Joshua and his whole army came against them suddenly at the Waters of Merom and attacked them, ⁸and the Lord gave them into the hand of Israel. They defeated them and pursued them all the way to Greater Sidon,^(S) to Misrephoth Maim,^(T) and to the Valley of Mizpah on the east, until no survivors were left. ⁹Joshua did to them as the Lord had directed: He hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.

¹⁰At that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor and put its king to the sword.^(U) (Hazor had been the head of all these kingdoms.) ¹¹Everyone in it they put to the sword. They totally destroyed^[a] them,^(V) not sparing anyone that breathed,^(W) and he burned^(X) Hazor itself.

¹²Joshua took all these royal cities and their kings and put them to the sword. He totally destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded.^(Y) ¹³Yet Israel did not burn any of the cities built on their mounds—except Hazor, which Joshua burned. ¹⁴The Israelites carried off for themselves all the plunder and livestock of these cities, but all the people they put to the sword until they completely destroyed them, not sparing anyone that breathed.^(Z) ¹⁵As the Lord commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and Joshua did it; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord commanded Moses.^(AA)

¹⁶So Joshua took this entire land: the hill country,^(AB) all the Negev,^(AC) the whole region of Goshen, the western foothills,^(AD) the Arabah and the mountains of Israel with their foothills, ¹⁷from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir,^(AE) to Baal Gad^(AF) in the Valley of Lebanon^(AG) below Mount Hermon.^(AH) He captured all their kings and put them to death.^(AI) ¹⁸Joshua waged war against all these kings for a long time. ¹⁹Except for the Hivites^(AJ) living in Gibeon,^(AK) not one city made a treaty of peace^(AL) with the Israelites, who took them all in battle. ²⁰For it was the Lord himself who hardened their hearts^(AM) to wage war against Israel, so that he might destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.^(AN)

²¹At that time Joshua went and destroyed the Anakites^(AO) from the hill country: from Hebron, Debir^(AP) and Anab,^(AQ) from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua totally destroyed them and their towns. ²²No Anakites were left in Israelite territory; only in Gaza,^(AR) Gath^(AS) and Ashdod^(AT) did any survive.

²³So Joshua took the entire land,^(AU) just as the Lord had directed Moses, and he gave it as an inheritance^(AV) to Israel according to their tribal divisions.^(AW) Then the land had rest^(AX) from war.^(AY)

List of Defeated Kings

12 These are the kings of the land whom the Israelites had defeated and whose territory they took^(AZ) over east of the Jordan,^(BA) from the Arnon^(BB) Gorge to Mount Hermon,^(BC) including all the eastern side of the Arabah:^(BD)

²Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon.^(BE)

He ruled from Aroer^(BF) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge—from the middle of the gorge—to the Jabbok River,^(BG) which is the border of the Ammonites.^(BH) This included half of Gilead.^(BI) ³He also ruled over the eastern Arabah from the Sea of Galilee^[b]^(BJ) to the Sea of the Arabah (that is, the Dead Sea^(BK)), to Beth Jeshimoth,^(BL) and then southward below the slopes of Pisgah.^(BM)

⁴And the territory of Og king of Bashan,^(BN) one of the last of the Rephaites,^(BO) who reigned in Ashtaroth^(BP) and Edrei.

⁵He ruled over Mount Hermon, Salekah,^(BQ) all of Bashan^(BR) to the border of the people of Geshur^(BS) and Maakah,^(BT) and half of Gilead^(BU) to the border of Sihon king of Heshbon.

⁶Moses, the servant of the Lord, and the Israelites conquered them.^(BV) And Moses the servant of the Lord gave their land to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh to be their possession.^(BW)

⁷Here is a list of the kings of the land that Joshua and the Israelites conquered on the west side of the Jordan, from Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon^(BX) to Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir. Joshua gave their lands as an inheritance to the tribes of Israel according to their tribal divisions. ⁸The lands included the hill country, the western foothills, the Arabah, the mountain slopes, the wilderness and the Negev.^(BY) These were the lands of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. Ten Lepers Cleansed

¹¹Now it happened ^(A)as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. ¹²Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, ^(B)who stood afar off. ¹³And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”

¹⁴So when He saw them, He said to them, ^(C)“Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed.

¹⁵And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice ^(D)glorified God, ¹⁶and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a ^(E)Samaritan.

¹⁷So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? ¹⁸Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” ¹⁹^(F)And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.”

The Coming of the Kingdom^(G)

²⁰Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation; ²¹^(H)nor will they say, ^[a]‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, ^(I)the kingdom of God is ^[b]within you.”

²²Then He said to the disciples, ^(J)“The days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. ²³^(K)And they will say to you, ^[c]‘Look here!’ or ‘Look there!’ Do not go after them or follow them. ²⁴^(L)For as the lightning that flashes out of one part under heaven shines to the other part under heaven, so also the Son of Man will be in His day. ²⁵^(M)But first He must suffer many things and be ^(N)rejected by this generation. ²⁶^(O)And as it ^(P)was in the ^(Q)days of ^(R)Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: ²⁷They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the ^(S)day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and ^(T)destroyed them all. ²⁸^(U)Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; ²⁹but on ^(V)the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. ³⁰Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man ^(W)is revealed.

And likewise the one who is in the field, let him not turn back. ³²^(Y)Remember Lot’s wife. ³³^(Z)Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. ³⁴^(AA)I tell you, in that night there will be two ^[e]men in one bed: the one will be taken and the other will be left. ³⁵^(AB)Two women will be grinding together: the one will be taken and the other left. ³⁶^[f]Two men will be in the field: the one will be taken and the other left.”

³⁷And they answered and said to Him, ^(AC)“Where, Lord?”

So He said to them, “Wherever the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together.”

Jesus Heals Ten Men With Leprosy

¹¹Now on his way to Jerusalem,^(A) Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee.^(B) ¹²As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy^[a]^(C) met him. They stood at a distance^(D) ¹³and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master,^(E) have pity on us!”

¹⁴When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.”^(F) And as they went, they were cleansed.

¹⁵One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God^(G) in a loud voice. ¹⁶He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.^(H)

¹⁷Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? ¹⁸Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” ¹⁹Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”^(I)

The Coming of the Kingdom of God^(J)

²⁰Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come,^(K) Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, ²¹nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’^(L) because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”^[b]

²²Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man,^(M) but you will not see it.^(N) ²³People will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them.^(O) ²⁴For the Son of Man in his day^[c] will be like the lightning,^(P) which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. ²⁵But first he must suffer many things^(Q) and be rejected^(R) by this generation.^(S)

²⁶“Just as it was in the days of Noah,^(T) so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. ²⁷People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

²⁸“It was the same in the days of Lot.^(U) People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. ²⁹But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.

³⁰“It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.^(V) ³¹On that day no one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything.^(W) ³²Remember Lot’s wife!^(X) ³³Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it.^(Y) ³⁴I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. ³⁵Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.”^(Z) ^[36]^[d]
