Conquest of Northern Cities

11 When King Jabin of Hazor heard this news, he sent a message to: King Jobab of Madon, the kings of Shimron and Achshaph, ² and the kings of the north in the hill country, the Arabah south of Chinnereth,^(A) the Judean foothills,^[a] and the Slopes of Dor^[b] to the west, ³ the Canaanites in the east and west, the Amorites, Hethites, Perizzites, and Jebusites in the hill country, and the Hivites at the foot of Hermon in the land of Mizpah.^{(B) 4} They went out with all their armies—a multitude as numerous as the sand on the seashore^(C)—along with a vast number of horses and chariots. ⁵ All these kings joined forces; they came and camped together at the Waters of Merom to attack Israel.^(D)

⁶ The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for at this time tomorrow I will cause all of them to be killed before Israel.^(E) You are to hamstring their horses and burn their chariots.”^{(F) 7} So Joshua and all his troops surprised them at the Waters of Merom and attacked them. ⁸ The Lord handed them over to Israel, and they struck them down, pursuing them as far as greater Sidon and Misrephoth-maim, and to the east as far as the Valley of Mizpeh.^(G) They struck them down, leaving no survivors.^{(H) 9} Joshua treated them as the Lord had told him; he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.

¹⁰ At that time Joshua turned back, captured Hazor, and struck down its king with the sword, because Hazor had formerly been the leader of all these kingdoms. ¹¹ They struck down everyone in it with the sword, completely destroying^(I) them; he left no one alive. Then he burned Hazor.

¹² Joshua captured all these kings and their cities and struck them down with the sword. He completely destroyed them, as Moses the Lord’s servant^(J) had commanded. ¹³ However, Israel did not burn any of the cities that stood on their mounds except Hazor, which Joshua burned. ¹⁴ The Israelites plundered all the spoils and cattle of these cities for themselves. But they struck down every person with the sword until they had annihilated them, leaving no one alive. ¹⁵ Just as the Lord had commanded his servant Moses, Moses commanded Joshua. That is what Joshua did, leaving nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.

Summary of Conquests

¹⁶ So Joshua took all this land—the hill country, all the Negev, all the land of Goshen,^(K) the foothills, the Arabah, and the hill country of Israel with its foothills— ¹⁷ from Mount Halak,^(L) which ascends to Seir, as far as Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon at the foot of Mount Hermon. He captured all their kings and struck them down, putting them to death.^{(M) 18} Joshua waged war with all these kings for a long time. ¹⁹ No city made peace with the Israelites except the Hivites who inhabited Gibeon;^(N) all of them were taken in battle. ²⁰ For it was the Lord’s intention to harden their hearts,^(O) so that they would engage Israel in battle, be completely destroyed without mercy, and be annihilated, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

²¹ At that time Joshua proceeded to exterminate the Anakim^(P) from the hill country—Hebron, Debir, Anab—all the hill country of Judah and of Israel. Joshua completely destroyed them with their cities. ²² No Anakim were left in the land of the Israelites, except for some remaining in Gaza, Gath,^(Q) and Ashdod.

²³ So Joshua took the entire land, in keeping with all that the Lord had told Moses. Joshua then gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their tribal allotments. After this, the land had rest from war.^(R)

Territory East of the Jordan

12 The Israelites struck down the following kings of the land and took possession of their land beyond the Jordan to the east and from the Arnon River to Mount Hermon, including all the Arabah eastward:^(S)

² King Sihon of the Amorites lived in Heshbon. He ruled from Aroer^(T) on the rim of the Arnon River, along the middle of the valley, and half of Gilead up to the Jabbok River (the border of the Ammonites^(U)), ³ the Arabah east of the Sea of Chinnereth^[c] to the Sea of Arabah (that is, the Dead Sea), eastward through Beth-jeshimoth^(V) and southward^[d] below the slopes of Pisgah.^(W)

⁴ King Og^[e] of Bashan, of the remnant of the Rephaim, lived in Ashtaroth and Edrei.^{(X) 5} He ruled over Mount Hermon, Salecah, all Bashan up to the Geshurite and Maacathite border, and half of Gilead to the border of King Sihon of Heshbon.^{(Y) 6} Moses the Lord’s servant^(Z) and the Israelites struck them^(AA) down. And Moses the Lord’s servant gave their land as an inheritance to the Reubenites, Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh.^(AB)

Territory West of the Jordan

⁷ Joshua and the Israelites struck down the following kings of the land beyond the Jordan to the west, from Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon to Mount Halak,^(AC) which ascends toward Seir (Joshua gave their land as an inheritance to the tribes of Israel according to their allotments: ⁸ the hill country, the Judean foothills,^[f] the Arabah, the slopes, the wilderness, and the Negev—the lands of the Hethites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites):

Ten Men Healed

¹¹ While traveling to Jerusalem,^(A) he passed between^[a] Samaria and Galilee.^{(B) 12} As he entered a village, ten men with leprosy^[b](C) met him. They stood at a distance ¹³ and raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master,^(D) have mercy on us!”

¹⁴ When he saw them, he told them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.”^(E) And while they were going, they were cleansed.

¹⁵ But one of them, seeing that he was healed, returned and, with a loud voice, gave glory to God.^{(F) 16} He fell facedown^(G) at his feet, thanking him. And he was a Samaritan.^(H)

¹⁷ Then Jesus said, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? ¹⁸ Didn’t any return to give glory to God except this foreigner?” ¹⁹ And he told him, “Get up and go on your way. Your faith has saved you.”^[c](I)

The Coming of the Kingdom

²⁰ When he was^(J) asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come,^(K) he answered them, “The kingdom of God is not coming with something observable; ²¹ no one will say,^[d] ‘See here!’ or ‘There!’ For you see, the kingdom of God is in your midst.”^[e]

²² Then he told the disciples, “The days are coming^(L) when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you won’t see it.^{(M) 23} They will say to you,^(N) ‘See there!’ or ‘See here!’ Don’t follow or run after them.^{(O) 24} For as the lightning flashes from horizon to horizon and lights up the sky, so the Son of Man will be in his day.^{(P) 25} But first it is necessary that he suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.^(Q)

²⁶ “Just as it was in the days of Noah,^(R) so it will be in the days of the Son of Man: ²⁷ People went on eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage^(S) until the day Noah boarded the ark,^(T) and the flood came and destroyed them all. ²⁸ It will be the same as it was in the days of Lot:^(U) People went on eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building. ²⁹ But on the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed^(V) them all. ³⁰ It^(W) will be like that on the day the Son of Man is revealed.^{(X) 31} On that day, a man on the housetop, whose belongings are in the house, must not come down to get them. Likewise the man who is in the field must not turn back. ³² Remember Lot’s wife!^{(Y) 33} Whoever tries to make his life secure^[f][g] will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.^{(Z) 34} I tell you, on that night^(AA) two will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other will be left. ³⁵ Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.”^[h]

³⁷ “Where, Lord?” ^(AB) they asked him.

He said to them, “Where the corpse is, there also the vultures^(AC) will be gathered.”
