15 Thus says the Lord:
(A)“A voice is heard in (B)Ramah,
    lamentation and bitter weeping.
(C)Rachel is weeping for her children;
    she refuses to be comforted for her children,
    (D)because they are no more.”

16 Thus says the Lord:
“Keep your voice from weeping,
    and your eyes from tears,
for there is a reward for your work,
declares the Lord,
    and (E)they shall come back from the land of the enemy.
17 (F)There is hope for your future,
declares the Lord,
    and your children shall come back to their own country.
18 I have heard (G)Ephraim grieving,
‘You have disciplined me, and I was disciplined,
    like an untrained calf;
(H)bring me back that I may be restored,
    for you are the Lord my God.
19 For after (I)I had turned away, I relented,
    and after I was instructed, (J)I struck my thigh;
(K)I was ashamed, and I was confounded,
    because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’
20 (L)Is Ephraim my dear son?
    (M)Is he my darling child?
For as often as I speak against him,
    I do remember him still.
(N)Therefore my heart[a] yearns for him;
    I will surely have mercy on him,
declares the Lord.

21 (O)“Set up road markers for yourself;
    make yourself guideposts;
(P)consider well the highway,
    (Q)the road by which you went.
Return, O virgin Israel,
    return to these your cities.
22 (R)How long will you waver,
    (S)O faithless daughter?
For the Lord has created a new thing on the earth:
    a woman encircles a man.”

23 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Once more they shall use these words in the land of Judah and in its cities, (T)when I restore their fortunes:

(U)“‘The Lord bless you, (V)O habitation of righteousness,
    (W)O holy hill!’

24 (X)And Judah and all its cities shall dwell there together, and (Y)the farmers and those who wander with their flocks. 25 For I will (Z)satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.”

26 At this I awoke and looked, and my sleep was pleasant to me.

27 (AA)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when (AB)I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with (AC)the seed of man and the seed of beast. 28 And it shall come to pass that (AD)as I have watched over them (AE)to pluck up and break down, to overthrow, destroy, and bring harm, (AF)so I will watch over them (AG)to build and to plant, declares the Lord. 29 In those days they shall no longer say:

(AH)“‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes,
    and the children's teeth are set on edge.’

30 (AI)But everyone shall die for his own iniquity. Each man who eats sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.

The New Covenant

31 (AJ)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make (AK)a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when (AL)I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, (AM)though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 (AN)For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: (AO)I will put my law within them, and I will write it (AP)on their hearts. (AQ)And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ (AR)for they shall all know me, (AS)from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For (AT)I will forgive their iniquity, and (AU)I will remember their sin no more.”

35 Thus says the Lord,
who (AV)gives the sun for light by day
    and (AW)the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night,
who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
    (AX)the Lord of hosts is his name:
36 (AY)“If this fixed order departs
    from before me, declares the Lord,
then shall the offspring of Israel cease
    from being a nation before me forever.”

37 Thus says the Lord:
“If the heavens above can be measured,
    and the foundations of the earth below can be explored,
(AZ)then I will cast off all the offspring of Israel
    for all that they have done,
declares the Lord.”

38 (BA)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when the city shall be rebuilt for the Lord (BB)from the Tower of Hananel to (BC)the Corner Gate. 39 (BD)And the measuring line shall go out farther, straight to the hill Gareb, and shall then turn to Goah. 40 (BE)The whole valley of the dead bodies and the ashes, and all the fields as far as the (BF)brook Kidron, to the corner of (BG)the Horse Gate toward the east, (BH)shall be sacred to the Lord. (BI)It shall not be plucked up or overthrown anymore forever.”

  1. Jeremiah 31:20 Hebrew bowels

15 This is what the Lord says:

“A voice is heard in Ramah,(A)
    mourning and great weeping,
Rachel weeping for her children
    and refusing to be comforted,(B)
    because they are no more.”(C)

16 This is what the Lord says:

“Restrain your voice from weeping
    and your eyes from tears,(D)
for your work will be rewarded,(E)
declares the Lord.
    “They will return(F) from the land of the enemy.
17 So there is hope(G) for your descendants,”
declares the Lord.
    “Your children(H) will return to their own land.

18 “I have surely heard Ephraim’s moaning:
    ‘You disciplined(I) me like an unruly calf,(J)
    and I have been disciplined.
Restore(K) me, and I will return,
    because you are the Lord my God.
19 After I strayed,(L)
    I repented;
after I came to understand,
    I beat(M) my breast.
I was ashamed(N) and humiliated
    because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’(O)
20 Is not Ephraim my dear son,
    the child(P) in whom I delight?
Though I often speak against him,
    I still remember(Q) him.
Therefore my heart yearns for him;
    I have great compassion(R) for him,”
declares the Lord.

21 “Set up road signs;
    put up guideposts.(S)
Take note of the highway,(T)
    the road that you take.
Return,(U) Virgin(V) Israel,
    return to your towns.
22 How long will you wander,(W)
    unfaithful(X) Daughter Israel?
The Lord will create a new thing(Y) on earth—
    the woman will return to[a](Z) the man.”

23 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “When I bring them back from captivity,[b](AA) the people in the land of Judah and in its towns will once again use these words: ‘The Lord bless(AB) you, you prosperous city,(AC) you sacred mountain.’(AD) 24 People will live(AE) together in Judah and all its towns—farmers and those who move about with their flocks.(AF) 25 I will refresh the weary(AG) and satisfy the faint.”(AH)

26 At this I awoke(AI) and looked around. My sleep had been pleasant to me.

27 “The days are coming,”(AJ) declares the Lord, “when I will plant(AK) the kingdoms of Israel and Judah with the offspring of people and of animals. 28 Just as I watched(AL) over them to uproot(AM) and tear down, and to overthrow, destroy and bring disaster,(AN) so I will watch over them to build and to plant,”(AO) declares the Lord. 29 “In those days people will no longer say,

‘The parents(AP) have eaten sour grapes,
    and the children’s teeth are set on edge.’(AQ)

30 Instead, everyone will die for their own sin;(AR) whoever eats sour grapes—their own teeth will be set on edge.

31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
    “when I will make a new covenant(AS)
with the people of Israel
    and with the people of Judah.
32 It will not be like the covenant(AT)
    I made with their ancestors(AU)
when I took them by the hand
    to lead them out of Egypt,(AV)
because they broke my covenant,
    though I was a husband(AW) to[c] them,[d]
declares the Lord.
33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel
    after that time,” declares the Lord.
“I will put my law in their minds(AX)
    and write it on their hearts.(AY)
I will be their God,
    and they will be my people.(AZ)
34 No longer will they teach(BA) their neighbor,
    or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know(BB) me,
    from the least of them to the greatest,”
declares the Lord.
“For I will forgive(BC) their wickedness
    and will remember their sins(BD) no more.”

35 This is what the Lord says,

he who appoints(BE) the sun
    to shine by day,
who decrees the moon and stars
    to shine by night,(BF)
who stirs up the sea(BG)
    so that its waves roar(BH)
    the Lord Almighty is his name:(BI)
36 “Only if these decrees(BJ) vanish from my sight,”
    declares the Lord,
“will Israel(BK) ever cease
    being a nation before me.”

37 This is what the Lord says:

“Only if the heavens above can be measured(BL)
    and the foundations of the earth below be searched out
will I reject(BM) all the descendants of Israel
    because of all they have done,”
declares the Lord.

38 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when this city will be rebuilt(BN) for me from the Tower of Hananel(BO) to the Corner Gate.(BP) 39 The measuring line(BQ) will stretch from there straight to the hill of Gareb and then turn to Goah. 40 The whole valley(BR) where dead bodies(BS) and ashes are thrown, and all the terraces out to the Kidron Valley(BT) on the east as far as the corner of the Horse Gate,(BU) will be holy(BV) to the Lord. The city will never again be uprooted or demolished.”

Judgment on Elam

34 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning (A)Elam, in the beginning of the reign of (B)Zedekiah king of Judah.

35 Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Behold, I will break (C)the bow of (D)Elam, the mainstay of their might. 36 And I will bring upon (E)Elam the four winds from the four quarters of heaven. And I will scatter them to all those winds, and there shall be no nation to which those driven out of (F)Elam shall not come. 37 I will (G)terrify (H)Elam before their enemies and before those who seek their life. I will bring disaster upon them, (I)my fierce anger, declares the Lord. (J)I will send the sword after them, until I have consumed them, 38 and I will set my throne in (K)Elam and destroy their king and officials, declares the Lord.

39 “But in the latter days (L)I will restore the fortunes of (M)Elam, declares the Lord.”

Judgment on Babylon

50 The word that the Lord spoke concerning (N)Babylon, concerning the land of the Chaldeans, (O)by Jeremiah the prophet:

“Declare among the nations and proclaim,
    set up a banner and proclaim,
    conceal it not, and say:
(P)‘Babylon is taken,
    (Q)Bel is put to shame,
    Merodach is dismayed.
(R)Her images are put to shame,
    her idols are dismayed.’

“For (S)out of the north a nation has come up against her, (T)which shall make her land a desolation, and none shall dwell in it; (U)both man and beast shall flee away.

(V)“In those days and in that time, declares the Lord, (W)the people of Israel and the people of Judah shall come together, (X)weeping as they come, and they (Y)shall seek the Lord their God. (Z)They shall ask the way to Zion, with faces turned toward it, (AA)saying, ‘Come, let us join ourselves to the Lord in an (AB)everlasting covenant that will never be forgotten.’

(AC)“My people have been lost sheep. (AD)Their shepherds have led them astray, turning them away on the mountains. From mountain to hill they have gone. They have forgotten their fold. All who found them have devoured them, (AE)and their enemies have said, ‘We are not guilty, for (AF)they have sinned against the Lord, (AG)their habitation of righteousness, the Lord, (AH)the hope of their fathers.’

(AI)“Flee from the midst of Babylon, (AJ)and go out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as male goats before the flock. For behold, I am stirring up and bringing against Babylon (AK)a gathering of great nations, from the north country. And they shall array themselves against her. From there she shall be taken. Their arrows are like a skilled warrior who does not return empty-handed. 10 (AL)Chaldea shall be plundered; all who plunder her shall be sated, declares the Lord.

11 (AM)“Though you rejoice, though you exult,
    O plunderers of my heritage,
though you frolic like a heifer in the pasture,
    and neigh like stallions,
12 your mother shall be utterly shamed,
    and she who bore you shall be disgraced.
Behold, she shall be the last of the nations,
    (AN)a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.
13 (AO)Because of the wrath of the Lord she shall not be inhabited
    but shall be an utter desolation;
(AP)everyone who passes by Babylon shall be appalled,
    (AQ)and hiss because of all her wounds.
14 (AR)Set yourselves in array against Babylon all around,
    (AS)all you who bend the bow;
shoot at her, spare no arrows,
    (AT)for she has sinned against the Lord.
15 (AU)Raise a shout against her all around;
    she has surrendered;
her bulwarks have fallen;
    (AV)her walls are thrown down.
For (AW)this is the vengeance of the Lord:
    take vengeance on her;
    (AX)do to her as she has done.
16 Cut off from Babylon the sower,
    and the one who handles the sickle in time of harvest;
(AY)because of the sword of the oppressor,
    (AZ)every one shall turn to his own people,
    and every one shall flee to his own land.

17 (BA)“Israel is a hunted sheep (BB)driven away by lions. (BC)First the king of Assyria (BD)devoured him, and now at last (BE)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon (BF)has gnawed his bones. 18 Therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, (BG)I am bringing punishment on the king of Babylon and his land, (BH)as I punished the king of Assyria. 19 (BI)I will restore Israel to his pasture, and (BJ)he shall feed on (BK)Carmel and in (BL)Bashan, and his desire shall be satisfied on the hills of Ephraim and in (BM)Gilead. 20 In those days and in that time, declares the Lord, (BN)iniquity shall be sought in Israel, and there shall be none, and sin in Judah, and none shall be found, for (BO)I will pardon those whom I leave as a remnant.

21 “Go up against the land of Merathaim,[a]
    and against the inhabitants of Pekod.[b]
Kill, (BP)and devote them to destruction,[c]
declares the Lord,
    and do all that I have commanded you.
22 (BQ)The noise of battle is in the land,
    and great destruction!
23 (BR)How the hammer of the whole earth
    is cut down and broken!
(BS)How Babylon (BT)has become
    a horror among the nations!
24 (BU)I set a snare for you and you were taken, O Babylon,
    and (BV)you did not know it;
you were found and caught,
    because you opposed the Lord.
25 The Lord has opened his armory
    and brought out (BW)the weapons of his wrath,
for the Lord God of hosts has a work to do
    in the land of the Chaldeans.
26 Come against her from every quarter;
    open her granaries;
(BX)pile her up like heaps of grain, and devote her to destruction;
    let nothing be left of her.
27 Kill all (BY)her bulls;
    let them go down to the slaughter.
Woe to them, for their day has come,
    (BZ)the time of their punishment.

28 “A voice! They (CA)flee and escape from the land of Babylon, (CB)to declare in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God, vengeance for (CC)his temple.

29 (CD)“Summon archers against Babylon, all those who bend the bow. (CE)Encamp around her; let no one escape. (CF)Repay her according to her deeds; do to her according to all that she has done. For she has (CG)proudly defied the Lord, the Holy One of Israel. 30 (CH)Therefore her young men shall fall in her squares, and all her soldiers shall be destroyed on that day, declares the Lord.

31 “Behold, I am against you, O (CI)proud one,
    declares the Lord God of hosts,
(CJ)for your day has come,
    the time when I will punish you.
32 (CK)The proud one shall stumble and fall,
    with none to raise him up,
(CL)and I will kindle a fire in his cities,
    and it will devour all that is around him.

33 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: (CM)The people of Israel are oppressed, and the people of Judah with them. All who took them captive have held them fast; (CN)they refuse to let them go. 34 (CO)Their Redeemer is strong; (CP)the Lord of hosts is his name. (CQ)He will surely plead their cause, that he may give rest to the earth, but unrest to the inhabitants of Babylon.

35 “A sword against the Chaldeans, declares the Lord,
    and against the inhabitants of Babylon,
    and against (CR)her officials and her (CS)wise men!
36 A sword against the diviners,
    that they may become fools!
A sword against her (CT)warriors,
    that they may be destroyed!
37 A sword against her horses and against her chariots,
    and against all (CU)the foreign troops in her midst,
    that (CV)they may become women!
(CW)A sword against all her treasures,
    that they may be plundered!
38 (CX)A drought against her waters,
    that they may be dried up!
(CY)For it is a land of images,
    and they are mad over idols.

39 (CZ)“Therefore wild beasts shall dwell with hyenas in Babylon,[d] and ostriches shall dwell in her. She shall never again have people, nor be inhabited for all generations. 40 (DA)As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring cities, declares the Lord, (DB)so no man shall dwell there, and no son of man shall sojourn in her.

41 (DC)“Behold, a people comes from the north;
    a mighty nation and many kings
    are stirring from the farthest parts of the earth.
42 They lay hold of bow and spear;
    they are cruel and have no mercy.
The sound of them is like the roaring of the sea;
    they ride on horses,
arrayed as a man for battle
    against you, O daughter of Babylon!

43 “The king of Babylon heard the report of them,
    and his hands fell helpless;
anguish seized him,
    pain as of a woman in labor.

44 (DD)“Behold, like a lion coming up from the thicket of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make them run away from her, and I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who will summon me? What shepherd (DE)can stand before me? 45 Therefore hear (DF)the plan that the Lord has made against Babylon, (DG)and the purposes that he has formed against the land of the Chaldeans: (DH)Surely the little ones of their flock shall be dragged away; surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 46 (DI)At the sound of the capture of Babylon the earth shall tremble, and her cry shall be heard among the nations.”

The Utter Destruction of Babylon

51 Thus says the Lord:
“Behold, I will stir up (DJ)the spirit of a destroyer
    against Babylon,
    against the inhabitants of Leb-kamai,[e]
and I will send to Babylon winnowers,
    and (DK)they shall winnow her,
and they shall empty her land,
    when they come against her from every side
    (DL)on the day of trouble.
(DM)Let not the archer bend his bow,
    and let him not stand up in his armor.
Spare not her young men;
    (DN)devote to destruction[f] all her army.
They shall fall down slain in the land of the Chaldeans,
    (DO)and wounded in her streets.
(DP)For Israel and Judah have not been forsaken
    by their God, the Lord of hosts,
but the land of the Chaldeans[g] is full of guilt
    against the Holy One of Israel.

(DQ)“Flee from the midst of Babylon;
    let every one save his life!
(DR)Be not cut off in her punishment,
    (DS)for this is the time of the Lord's vengeance,
    the repayment he is rendering her.
Babylon was (DT)a golden cup in the Lord's hand,
    (DU)making all the earth drunken;
(DV)the nations drank of her wine;
    therefore the nations went mad.
(DW)Suddenly Babylon has fallen and been broken;
    (DX)wail for her!
(DY)Take balm for her pain;
    perhaps she may be healed.
We would have healed Babylon,
    but she was not healed.
(DZ)Forsake her, and (EA)let us go
    each to his own country,
for (EB)her judgment has reached up to heaven
    and has been lifted up even to the skies.
10 (EC)The Lord has brought about our vindication;
    (ED)come, let us declare in Zion
    the work of the Lord our God.

11 (EE)“Sharpen the arrows!
    Take up the shields!

(EF)The Lord has stirred up the spirit of the kings of (EG)the Medes, because (EH)his purpose concerning Babylon is to destroy it, (EI)for that is the vengeance of the Lord, the vengeance for (EJ)his temple.

12 (EK)“Set up a standard against the walls of Babylon;
    (EL)make the watch strong;
set up watchmen;
    prepare the ambushes;
(EM)for the Lord has both planned and done
    what he spoke concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.
13 (EN)O you who dwell by many waters,
    rich in treasures,
your end has come;
    the thread of your life is cut.
14 (EO)The Lord of hosts has sworn by himself:
Surely I will fill you with men, (EP)as many as locusts,
    (EQ)and they shall raise the shout of victory over you.

A Message About Elam

34 This is the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam,(A) early in the reign of Zedekiah(B) king of Judah:

35 This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“See, I will break the bow(C) of Elam,
    the mainstay of their might.
36 I will bring against Elam the four winds(D)
    from the four quarters of heaven;(E)
I will scatter them to the four winds,
    and there will not be a nation
    where Elam’s exiles do not go.
37 I will shatter Elam before their foes,
    before those who want to kill them;
I will bring disaster on them,
    even my fierce anger,”(F)
declares the Lord.
“I will pursue them with the sword(G)
    until I have made an end of them.
38 I will set my throne in Elam
    and destroy her king and officials,”
declares the Lord.

39 “Yet I will restore(H) the fortunes of Elam
    in days to come,”
declares the Lord.

A Message About Babylon(I)

50 This is the word the Lord spoke through Jeremiah the prophet concerning Babylon(J) and the land of the Babylonians[a]:

“Announce and proclaim(K) among the nations,
    lift up a banner(L) and proclaim it;
    keep nothing back, but say,
‘Babylon will be captured;(M)
    Bel(N) will be put to shame,(O)
    Marduk(P) filled with terror.
Her images will be put to shame
    and her idols(Q) filled with terror.’
A nation from the north(R) will attack her
    and lay waste her land.
No one will live(S) in it;
    both people and animals(T) will flee away.

“In those days, at that time,”
    declares the Lord,
“the people of Israel and the people of Judah together(U)
    will go in tears(V) to seek(W) the Lord their God.
They will ask the way(X) to Zion
    and turn their faces toward it.
They will come(Y) and bind themselves to the Lord
    in an everlasting covenant(Z)
    that will not be forgotten.

“My people have been lost sheep;(AA)
    their shepherds(AB) have led them astray(AC)
    and caused them to roam on the mountains.
They wandered over mountain and hill(AD)
    and forgot their own resting place.(AE)
Whoever found them devoured(AF) them;
    their enemies said, ‘We are not guilty,(AG)
for they sinned against the Lord, their verdant pasture,
    the Lord, the hope(AH) of their ancestors.’

“Flee(AI) out of Babylon;(AJ)
    leave the land of the Babylonians,
    and be like the goats that lead the flock.
For I will stir(AK) up and bring against Babylon
    an alliance of great nations(AL) from the land of the north.(AM)
They will take up their positions against her,
    and from the north she will be captured.(AN)
Their arrows(AO) will be like skilled warriors
    who do not return empty-handed.
10 So Babylonia[b] will be plundered;(AP)
    all who plunder her will have their fill,”
declares the Lord.

11 “Because you rejoice and are glad,
    you who pillage my inheritance,(AQ)
because you frolic like a heifer(AR) threshing grain
    and neigh like stallions,
12 your mother will be greatly ashamed;
    she who gave you birth will be disgraced.(AS)
She will be the least of the nations—
    a wilderness, a dry land, a desert.(AT)
13 Because of the Lord’s anger she will not be inhabited
    but will be completely desolate.(AU)
All who pass Babylon will be appalled;(AV)
    they will scoff(AW) because of all her wounds.(AX)

14 “Take up your positions around Babylon,
    all you who draw the bow.(AY)
Shoot at her! Spare no arrows,(AZ)
    for she has sinned against the Lord.
15 Shout(BA) against her on every side!
    She surrenders, her towers fall,
    her walls(BB) are torn down.
Since this is the vengeance(BC) of the Lord,
    take vengeance on her;
    do to her(BD) as she has done to others.(BE)
16 Cut off from Babylon the sower,
    and the reaper with his sickle at harvest.
Because of the sword(BF) of the oppressor
    let everyone return to their own people,(BG)
    let everyone flee to their own land.(BH)

17 “Israel is a scattered flock(BI)
    that lions(BJ) have chased away.
The first to devour(BK) them
    was the king(BL) of Assyria;
the last to crush their bones(BM)
    was Nebuchadnezzar(BN) king(BO) of Babylon.”

18 Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:

“I will punish the king of Babylon and his land
    as I punished the king(BP) of Assyria.(BQ)
19 But I will bring(BR) Israel back to their own pasture,
    and they will graze on Carmel and Bashan;
their appetite will be satisfied(BS)
    on the hills(BT) of Ephraim and Gilead.(BU)
20 In those days, at that time,”
    declares the Lord,
“search will be made for Israel’s guilt,
    but there will be none,(BV)
and for the sins(BW) of Judah,
    but none will be found,
    for I will forgive(BX) the remnant(BY) I spare.

21 “Attack the land of Merathaim
    and those who live in Pekod.(BZ)
Pursue, kill and completely destroy[c] them,”
declares the Lord.
    “Do everything I have commanded you.
22 The noise(CA) of battle is in the land,
    the noise of great destruction!
23 How broken and shattered
    is the hammer(CB) of the whole earth!(CC)
How desolate(CD) is Babylon
    among the nations!
24 I set a trap(CE) for you, Babylon,
    and you were caught before you knew it;
you were found and captured(CF)
    because you opposed(CG) the Lord.
25 The Lord has opened his arsenal
    and brought out the weapons(CH) of his wrath,
for the Sovereign Lord Almighty has work to do
    in the land of the Babylonians.(CI)
26 Come against her from afar.(CJ)
    Break open her granaries;
    pile her up like heaps of grain.(CK)
Completely destroy(CL) her
    and leave her no remnant.
27 Kill all her young bulls;(CM)
    let them go down to the slaughter!(CN)
Woe to them! For their day(CO) has come,
    the time(CP) for them to be punished.
28 Listen to the fugitives(CQ) and refugees from Babylon
    declaring in Zion(CR)
how the Lord our God has taken vengeance,(CS)
    vengeance for his temple.(CT)

29 “Summon archers against Babylon,
    all those who draw the bow.(CU)
Encamp all around her;
    let no one escape.(CV)
Repay(CW) her for her deeds;(CX)
    do to her as she has done.
For she has defied(CY) the Lord,
    the Holy One(CZ) of Israel.
30 Therefore, her young men(DA) will fall in the streets;
    all her soldiers will be silenced in that day,”
declares the Lord.
31 “See, I am against(DB) you, you arrogant one,”
    declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
“for your day(DC) has come,
    the time for you to be punished.
32 The arrogant(DD) one will stumble and fall(DE)
    and no one will help her up;(DF)
I will kindle a fire(DG) in her towns
    that will consume all who are around her.”

33 This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“The people of Israel are oppressed,(DH)
    and the people of Judah as well.
All their captors hold them fast,
    refusing to let them go.(DI)
34 Yet their Redeemer(DJ) is strong;
    the Lord Almighty(DK) is his name.
He will vigorously defend their cause(DL)
    so that he may bring rest(DM) to their land,
    but unrest to those who live in Babylon.

35 “A sword(DN) against the Babylonians!”(DO)
    declares the Lord
“against those who live in Babylon
    and against her officials and wise(DP) men!
36 A sword against her false prophets!
    They will become fools.
A sword against her warriors!(DQ)
    They will be filled with terror.(DR)
37 A sword against her horses and chariots(DS)
    and all the foreigners in her ranks!
    They will become weaklings.(DT)
A sword against her treasures!(DU)
    They will be plundered.
38 A drought on[d] her waters!(DV)
    They will dry(DW) up.
For it is a land of idols,(DX)
    idols that will go mad with terror.

39 “So desert creatures(DY) and hyenas will live there,
    and there the owl will dwell.
It will never again be inhabited
    or lived in from generation to generation.(DZ)
40 As I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah(EA)
    along with their neighboring towns,”
declares the Lord,
“so no one will live there;
    no people will dwell in it.(EB)

41 “Look! An army is coming from the north;(EC)
    a great nation and many kings
    are being stirred(ED) up from the ends of the earth.(EE)
42 They are armed with bows(EF) and spears;
    they are cruel(EG) and without mercy.(EH)
They sound like the roaring sea(EI)
    as they ride on their horses;
they come like men in battle formation
    to attack you, Daughter Babylon.(EJ)
43 The king of Babylon has heard reports about them,
    and his hands hang limp.(EK)
Anguish has gripped him,
    pain like that of a woman in labor.(EL)
44 Like a lion coming up from Jordan’s thickets(EM)
    to a rich pastureland,
I will chase Babylon from its land in an instant.
    Who is the chosen(EN) one I will appoint for this?
Who is like me and who can challenge me?(EO)
    And what shepherd can stand against me?”

45 Therefore, hear what the Lord has planned against Babylon,
    what he has purposed(EP) against the land of the Babylonians:(EQ)
The young of the flock will be dragged away;
    their pasture will be appalled at their fate.
46 At the sound of Babylon’s capture the earth will tremble;(ER)
    its cry(ES) will resound among the nations.

51 This is what the Lord says:

“See, I will stir(ET) up the spirit of a destroyer
    against Babylon(EU) and the people of Leb Kamai.[e]
I will send foreigners(EV) to Babylon
    to winnow(EW) her and to devastate her land;
they will oppose her on every side
    in the day(EX) of her disaster.
Let not the archer string his bow,(EY)
    nor let him put on his armor.(EZ)
Do not spare her young men;
    completely destroy[f] her army.
They will fall(FA) down slain in Babylon,[g]
    fatally wounded in her streets.(FB)
For Israel and Judah have not been forsaken(FC)
    by their God, the Lord Almighty,
though their land[h] is full of guilt(FD)
    before the Holy One of Israel.

“Flee(FE) from Babylon!
    Run for your lives!
    Do not be destroyed because of her sins.(FF)
It is time(FG) for the Lord’s vengeance;(FH)
    he will repay(FI) her what she deserves.
Babylon was a gold cup(FJ) in the Lord’s hand;
    she made the whole earth drunk.
The nations drank her wine;
    therefore they have now gone mad.
Babylon will suddenly fall(FK) and be broken.
    Wail over her!
Get balm(FL) for her pain;
    perhaps she can be healed.

“‘We would have healed Babylon,
    but she cannot be healed;
let us leave(FM) her and each go to our own land,
    for her judgment(FN) reaches to the skies,
    it rises as high as the heavens.’

10 “‘The Lord has vindicated(FO) us;
    come, let us tell in Zion
    what the Lord our God has done.’(FP)

11 “Sharpen the arrows,(FQ)
    take up the shields!(FR)
The Lord has stirred up the kings(FS) of the Medes,(FT)
    because his purpose(FU) is to destroy Babylon.
The Lord will take vengeance,(FV)
    vengeance for his temple.(FW)
12 Lift up a banner(FX) against the walls of Babylon!
    Reinforce the guard,
station the watchmen,(FY)
    prepare an ambush!(FZ)
The Lord will carry out his purpose,(GA)
    his decree against the people of Babylon.
13 You who live by many waters(GB)
    and are rich in treasures,(GC)
your end has come,
    the time for you to be destroyed.(GD)
14 The Lord Almighty has sworn by himself:(GE)
    I will surely fill you with troops, as with a swarm of locusts,(GF)
    and they will shout(GG) in triumph over you.
