38 Do meio da tempestade, o SENHOR respondeu a Jó:
2 “Quem é este homem que apaga o meu conselho,
falando sem conhecimento?
3 Mostre que é homem, prepare-se para me enfrentar,
e responda às perguntas que vou lhe fazer.
4 “Onde você estava quando eu criei a terra?
Responda se acha que sabe de alguma coisa.
5 Quem é que decidiu as dimensões que a terra deveria ter?
Certamente que sabe disso.
E quem foi que fez as medições com a linha de medir?
6 Os alicerces da terra estão apoiados em quê?
Quem colocou a sua primeira pedra,[a]
7 enquanto as estrelas da manhã cantavam em coro
e todos os seres celestiais[b] clamavam de alegria?
8 “Quem prendeu o mar fechando as suas portas,
quando ele saltava do ventre da terra?
9 Quando o vesti com nuvens,
e o cobri com a neblina,
10 quando fixei os limites até onde ele podia sair
e o coloquei atrás de portas trancadas,
11 quando lhe disse: ‘Daqui para a frente, não pode passar,
e as suas ondas orgulhosas só podem chegar até aqui’.
12 “Alguma vez na sua vida disse para a manhã aparecer
ou mostrou à aurora o lugar onde deve ficar
13 para encher toda a terra de luz
e fazer desaparecer os maus?
14 A luz transforma a terra como o selo molda o barro,
as suas paisagens ganham cor como um vestido.
15 Mas a luz cega os maus,
e o poder do violento é quebrado.
16 “Jó, você já foi às nascentes do mar?
Você já passeou pelas profundezas do oceano?
17 Você conhece os portões do lugar dos mortos?
Você viu as portas da sombra da morte?
18 Você tem pensado na imensidão da terra?
Diga-me, se sabe de tudo isso.
19 “Como é que se vai para o lugar onde mora a luz?
E onde é que habita a escuridão?
20 Pode levá-los até os seus limites?
Você conhece o caminho para os seus lugares?
21 Você já sabe de tudo isso pois nasceu antes deles!
Será que você já viveutantos anos?
22 “Você já foi aos depósitos da neve?
Você viu os reservatórios do granizo,
23 que tenho guardado para os tempos difíceis,
para o dia de guerra e combate?
24 Onde é que o calor é criado
para depois ser espalhado sobre a terra pelo vento leste?
25 Quem abre um canal para a chuva torrencial correr,
ou um caminho para o estrondo do trovão,
26 para fazer chover onde não há ninguém;
ou no deserto onde ninguém vive.
27 Essa chuva enche o deserto seco
e faz brotar a erva.
28 Por acaso tem a chuva um pai?
Quem criou as gotas do orvalho?
29 Quem é a mãe do gelo?
Quem dá à luz o granizo dos céus?
30 Com eles a água se congela como a pedra;
e a superfície do abismo também.
31 “Você pode prender as Plêiades[c] com cordas
ou desatar as cordas de Órion[d]?
32 Você pode fazer aparecer as constelações[e] no seu devido tempo?
Você é capaz de guiar a Ursa com os seus filhotes[f]?
33 Você conhece as leis que governam os céus?
Você pode fazer com que elas governem a terra?
34 Você pode fazer com que as nuvens ouçam a sua voz
e a sua chuva caia sobre você em abundância?
35 Será que os relâmpagos obedecem à sua voz?
Será que eles lhe dizem: ‘Estamos prontos’?
36 “Quem foi que deu sabedoria ao coração
e inteligência à mente?
37 Quem é suficientemente sábio para contar as nuvens?
Quem é capaz de despejar a água dos céus,
38 quando a terra se torna dura
e os torrões se agarram entre si?
39 É você que caça a presa para a leoa
e mata a fome aos leõezinhos,
40 quando se deitam nas suas tocas
ou se agacham entre os arbustos?
41 Quem dá comida aos corvos
quando os seus filhotes nada têm
e pedem ajuda a Deus?

Deus responde a Jó e mostra-lhe sua grandeza e sabedoria
38 Depois disto, o Senhor respondeu a Jó de um redemoinho e disse: 2 Quem é este que escurece o conselho com palavras sem conhecimento? 3 Agora cinge os teus lombos como homem; e perguntar-te-ei, e, tu, responde-me.
4 Onde estavas tu quando eu fundava a terra? Faze-mo saber, se tens inteligência. 5 Quem lhe pôs as medidas, se tu o sabes? Ou quem estendeu sobre ela o cordel? 6 Sobre que estão fundadas as suas bases, ou quem assentou a sua pedra de esquina, 7 quando as estrelas da alva juntas alegremente cantavam, e todos os filhos de Deus rejubilavam?
8 Ou quem encerrou o mar com portas, quando trasbordou e saiu da madre, 9 quando eu pus as nuvens por sua vestidura e, a escuridão, por envolvedouro? 10 Quando passei sobre ele o meu decreto, e lhe pus portas e ferrolhos, 11 e disse: Até aqui virás, e não mais adiante, e aqui se quebrarão as tuas ondas empoladas?
12 Ou desde os teus dias deste ordem à madrugada ou mostraste à alva o seu lugar, 13 para que agarrasse nas extremidades da terra, e os ímpios fossem sacudidos dela? 14 Tudo se modela como o barro sob o selo e se põe como vestes; 15 e dos ímpios se desvia a sua luz, e o braço altivo se quebranta.
16 Ou entraste tu até às origens do mar, ou passeaste no mais profundo do abismo? 17 Ou descobriram-se-te as portas da morte, ou viste as portas da sombra da morte? 18 Ou com o teu entendimento chegaste às larguras da terra? Faze-mo saber, se sabes tudo isto.
19 Onde está o caminho da morada da luz? E, quanto às trevas, onde está o seu lugar, 20 para que as tragas aos seus limites, e para que saibas as veredas da sua casa? 21 Decerto, tu o sabes, porque já então eras nascido, e porque é grande o número dos teus dias!
22 Ou entraste tu até aos tesouros da neve e viste os tesouros da saraiva, 23 que eu retenho até ao tempo da angústia, até ao dia da peleja e da guerra?
24 Onde está o caminho em que se reparte a luz, e se espalha o vento oriental sobre a terra? 25 Quem abriu para a inundação um leito e um caminho para os relâmpagos dos trovões, 26 para chover sobre uma terra onde não há ninguém e no deserto, em que não há gente; 27 para fartar a terra deserta e assolada e para fazer crescer os renovos da erva? 28 A chuva, porventura, tem pai? Ou quem gera as gotas do orvalho? 29 De que ventre procede o gelo? E quem gera a geada do céu, 30 quando debaixo de pedras as águas se escondem, e a superfície do abismo se coalha?
31 Ou poderás tu ajuntar as cadeias do Sete-estrelo ou soltar os atilhos do Órion? 32 Ou produzir as constelações a seu tempo e guiar a Ursa com seus filhos? 33 Sabes tu as ordenanças dos céus, ou podes dispor do domínio deles sobre a terra?
34 Ou podes levantar a tua voz até às nuvens, para que a abundância das águas te cubra? 35 Ou ordenarás aos raios que saiam e te digam: Eis-nos aqui? 36 Quem pôs a sabedoria no íntimo, ou quem à mente deu o entendimento? 37 Quem numerará as nuvens pela sabedoria? Ou os odres dos céus, quem os abaixará, 38 quando se funde o pó numa massa, e se pegam os torrões uns aos outros?
39 Porventura, caçarás tu presa para a leoa ou satisfarás a fome dos filhos dos leões, 40 quando se agacham nos covis e estão à espreita nas covas? 41 Quem prepara para os corvos o seu alimento, quando os seus pintainhos gritam a Deus e andam vagueando, por não terem que comer?

Have You Gotten to the Bottom of Things?
38 1-11 And now, finally, God answered Job from the eye of a violent storm. He said:
“Why do you confuse the issue?
Why do you talk without knowing what you’re talking about?
Pull yourself together, Job!
Up on your feet! Stand tall!
I have some questions for you,
and I want some straight answers.
Where were you when I created the earth?
Tell me, since you know so much!
Who decided on its size? Certainly you’ll know that!
Who came up with the blueprints and measurements?
How was its foundation poured,
and who set the cornerstone,
While the morning stars sang in chorus
and all the angels shouted praise?
And who took charge of the ocean
when it gushed forth like a baby from the womb?
That was me! I wrapped it in soft clouds,
and tucked it in safely at night.
Then I made a playpen for it,
a strong playpen so it couldn’t run loose,
And said, ‘Stay here, this is your place.
Your wild tantrums are confined to this place.’
12-15 “And have you ever ordered Morning, ‘Get up!’
told Dawn, ‘Get to work!’
So you could seize Earth like a blanket
and shake out the wicked like cockroaches?
As the sun brings everything to light,
brings out all the colors and shapes,
The cover of darkness is snatched from the wicked—
they’re caught in the very act!
16-18 “Have you ever gotten to the true bottom of things,
explored the labyrinthine caves of deep ocean?
Do you know the first thing about death?
Do you have one clue regarding death’s dark mysteries?
And do you have any idea how large this earth is?
Speak up if you have even the beginning of an answer.
19-21 “Do you know where Light comes from
and where Darkness lives
So you can take them by the hand
and lead them home when they get lost?
Why, of course you know that.
You’ve known them all your life,
grown up in the same neighborhood with them!
22-30 “Have you ever traveled to where snow is made,
seen the vault where hail is stockpiled,
The arsenals of hail and snow that I keep in readiness
for times of trouble and battle and war?
Can you find your way to where lightning is launched,
or to the place from which the wind blows?
Who do you suppose carves canyons
for the downpours of rain, and charts
the route of thunderstorms
That bring water to unvisited fields,
deserts no one ever lays eyes on,
Drenching the useless wastelands
so they’re carpeted with wildflowers and grass?
And who do you think is the father of rain and dew,
the mother of ice and frost?
You don’t for a minute imagine
these marvels of weather just happen, do you?
31-33 “Can you catch the eye of the beautiful Pleiades sisters,
or distract Orion from his hunt?
Can you get Venus to look your way,
or get the Great Bear and her cubs to come out and play?
Do you know the first thing about the sky’s constellations
and how they affect things on Earth?
34-35 “Can you get the attention of the clouds,
and commission a shower of rain?
Can you take charge of the lightning bolts
and have them report to you for orders?
What Do You Have to Say for Yourself?
36-38 “Who do you think gave weather-wisdom to the ibis,
and storm-savvy to the rooster?
Does anyone know enough to number all the clouds
or tip over the rain barrels of heaven
When the earth is cracked and dry,
the ground baked hard as a brick?
39-41 “Can you teach the lioness to stalk her prey
and satisfy the appetite of her cubs
As they crouch in their den,
waiting hungrily in their cave?
And who sets out food for the ravens
when their young cry to God,
fluttering about because they have no food?”

38 Then the Lord spoke to Job(A) out of the storm.(B) He said:
2 “Who is this that obscures my plans(C)
with words without knowledge?(D)
3 Brace yourself like a man;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.(E)
4 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?(F)
Tell me, if you understand.(G)
5 Who marked off its dimensions?(H) Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line(I) across it?
6 On what were its footings set,(J)
or who laid its cornerstone(K)—
7 while the morning stars(L) sang together(M)
and all the angels[a](N) shouted for joy?(O)
8 “Who shut up the sea behind doors(P)
when it burst forth from the womb,(Q)
9 when I made the clouds its garment
and wrapped it in thick darkness,(R)
10 when I fixed limits for it(S)
and set its doors and bars in place,(T)
11 when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther;(U)
here is where your proud waves halt’?(V)
12 “Have you ever given orders to the morning,(W)
or shown the dawn its place,(X)
13 that it might take the earth by the edges
and shake the wicked(Y) out of it?(Z)
14 The earth takes shape like clay under a seal;(AA)
its features stand out like those of a garment.
15 The wicked are denied their light,(AB)
and their upraised arm is broken.(AC)
16 “Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea
or walked in the recesses of the deep?(AD)
17 Have the gates of death(AE) been shown to you?
Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness?(AF)
18 Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth?(AG)
Tell me, if you know all this.(AH)
19 “What is the way to the abode of light?
And where does darkness reside?(AI)
20 Can you take them to their places?
Do you know the paths(AJ) to their dwellings?
21 Surely you know, for you were already born!(AK)
You have lived so many years!
22 “Have you entered the storehouses of the snow(AL)
or seen the storehouses(AM) of the hail,(AN)
23 which I reserve for times of trouble,(AO)
for days of war and battle?(AP)
24 What is the way to the place where the lightning is dispersed,(AQ)
or the place where the east winds(AR) are scattered over the earth?(AS)
25 Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain,
and a path for the thunderstorm,(AT)
26 to water(AU) a land where no one lives,
an uninhabited desert,(AV)
27 to satisfy a desolate wasteland
and make it sprout with grass?(AW)
28 Does the rain have a father?(AX)
Who fathers the drops of dew?
29 From whose womb comes the ice?
Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens(AY)
30 when the waters become hard as stone,
when the surface of the deep is frozen?(AZ)
31 “Can you bind the chains[b] of the Pleiades?
Can you loosen Orion’s belt?(BA)
32 Can you bring forth the constellations(BB) in their seasons[c]
or lead out the Bear[d] with its cubs?(BC)
33 Do you know the laws(BD) of the heavens?(BE)
Can you set up God’s[e] dominion over the earth?
34 “Can you raise your voice to the clouds
and cover yourself with a flood of water?(BF)
35 Do you send the lightning bolts on their way?(BG)
Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?
36 Who gives the ibis wisdom[f](BH)
or gives the rooster understanding?[g](BI)
37 Who has the wisdom to count the clouds?
Who can tip over the water jars(BJ) of the heavens(BK)
