Poema da sabedoria
28 Existem minas de onde se tira a prata
e lugares onde se refina o ouro.
2 O ferro é extraído da terra
e da pedra se funde o bronze.
3 O mineiro ilumina a mina e procura minério
nos lugares mais escondidos, na mais profunda escuridão.
4 Os mineiros abrem túneis longe de onde vivem as pessoas,
onde ninguém nunca esteve.
Lá, longe dos outros seres humanos,
eles se suspendem nas cordas.
5 Por cima deles, a terra produz comida,
mas embaixo, tudo é diferente,
é como um fogo fervendo que derrete tudo.
6 No meio das rochas existem safiras
e ouro no pó da terra.
7 As aves de rapina não conhecem a trilha que leva a esses tesouros,
nem os olhos do falcão conseguem distinguir qual é esse caminho.
8 Os animais selvagens jamais desceram nas minas profundas,
o leão nunca esteve nesses lugares.
9 O mineiro escava as rochas duras
e derruba montanhas inteiras.
10 Ele faz túneis através das rochas
e encontra todo tipo de pedras preciosas.
11 Ele faz represas nas fontes dos rios
e traz à luz as riquezas que estavam escondidas.
12 E quanto à sabedoria, onde ela se encontra?
Onde pode ser achado o entendimento?
13 O homem não conhece o caminho que leva à sabedoria,
ela não se encontra neste mundo.
14 As profundezas do oceano dizem: “Não é aqui que se encontra a sabedoria”.
O mar diz: “Aqui também não”.
15 Não pode ser dado ouro fino em troca dela,
e não há prata que a compre.
16 Não pode ser comprada nem com o ouro puro de Ofir[a],
nem com o precioso ônix, nem com safiras.
17 Vale mais do que o ouro ou o vidro[b].
Não pode ser trocada por joias de ouro fino.
18 Nem vale a pena mencionar o coral e o jaspe,
a sabedoria é mais valiosa do que os rubis.
19 O topázio da Etiópia não vale nada comparado com a sabedoria.
Não se adquire a sabedoria em troca de ouro puro.
20 Então, onde pode ser achada a sabedoria?
Onde mora o entendimento?
21 A sabedoria está oculta aos olhos de todo ser vivo,
nem as aves do céu sabem onde ela está.
22 O mundo dos mortos[c] e a própria Morte dizem:
“Só ouvimos falar dela”.
23 Só Deus sabe onde ela está,
só ele conhece o caminho que leva até ela.
24 Deus consegue ver o que há nos limites da terra,
ele enxerga tudo o que acontece debaixo dos céus.
25 Quando ele decidiu quão forte devia ser o vento
e quão grandes deviam ser os oceanos;
26 quando ele decidiu onde a chuva devia cair
e por onde a tempestade e os trovões deviam passar;
27 foi ali que ele olhou para a sabedoria e viu o quanto ela valia,
foi ali que ele a examinou e deu a sua aprovação a ela.
28 Então disse aos homens:
“O homem que vive no temor do SENHOR
é quem de verdade achou a sabedoria.
O homem que não faz o mal
é quem de verdade achou o entendimento”.

28 Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they fine it.
2 Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is molten out of the stone.
3 He setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death.
4 The flood breaketh out from the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot: they are dried up, they are gone away from men.
5 As for the earth, out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire.
6 The stones of it are the place of sapphires: and it hath dust of gold.
7 There is a path which no fowl knoweth, and which the vulture's eye hath not seen:
8 The lion's whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it.
9 He putteth forth his hand upon the rock; he overturneth the mountains by the roots.
10 He cutteth out rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing.
11 He bindeth the floods from overflowing; and the thing that is hid bringeth he forth to light.
12 But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?
13 Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.
14 The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me.
15 It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.
16 It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.
17 The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.
18 No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.
19 The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.
20 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
21 Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.
22 Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.
23 God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof.
24 For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven;
25 To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure.
26 When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:
27 Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.
28 And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

Job Continues: Where Is Wisdom?
28 “Surely there is a mine for silver,
and a place for gold that they (A)refine.
2 Iron is taken out of the earth,
and copper is smelted from the ore.
3 Man puts an end to darkness
and searches out to the farthest limit
the ore in (B)gloom and (C)deep darkness.
4 He opens shafts in a valley away from where anyone lives;
they are forgotten by travelers;
they hang in the air, far away from mankind; they swing to and fro.
5 As for the earth, (D)out of it comes bread,
but underneath it is turned up as by fire.
6 Its stones are the place of (E)sapphires,[a]
and it has dust of gold.
7 “That path no bird of prey knows,
and the falcon's eye has not seen it.
8 (F)The proud beasts have not trodden it;
(G)the lion has not passed over it.
9 “Man puts his hand to (H)the flinty rock
and overturns mountains by the roots.
10 He cuts out channels in the rocks,
and his eye sees every precious thing.
11 He dams up the streams so that they do not trickle,
and the thing that is hidden he brings out to light.
12 (I)“But where shall wisdom be found?
And where is the place of understanding?
13 Man does not know its worth,
and it is not found in (J)the land of the living.
14 (K)The deep says, ‘It is not in me,’
and the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’
15 It (L)cannot be bought for gold,
and silver cannot be weighed as its price.
16 It cannot be valued in (M)the gold of (N)Ophir,
in precious (O)onyx or (P)sapphire.
17 Gold and glass cannot equal it,
nor can it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold.
18 No mention shall be made of (Q)coral or of crystal;
the price of wisdom is above (R)(S)pearls.
19 (T)The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it,
nor can it be valued in pure gold.
20 “From where, then, does wisdom come?
And where is the place of understanding?
21 It is hidden from the eyes of (U)all living
and concealed from the birds of the air.

‘We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.’
23 (W)“God understands the way to it,
and he knows its place.
24 For he (X)looks to the ends of the earth
and sees everything under the heavens.
25 When he (Y)gave to the wind its weight
and apportioned the waters by measure,
26 when he made a decree for the rain
and (Z)a way for the lightning of the thunder,
27 then he saw it and declared it;
he established it, and searched it out.
28 And he said to man,
‘Behold, (AA)the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom,
and to (AB)turn away from evil is understanding.’”
