Segundo discurso de Elifaz
15 Então Elifaz, da região de Temã, respondeu:
2 “Um homem sábio não responderia com ideias tão vazias,
nem estaria tão cheio de vento quente.
3 Não discutiria com palavras inúteis,
nem com discursos que nada servem.
4 Mas você quer destruir o respeito que devemos ter por Deus,
e não dá importância à oração.
5 O que sai da sua boca mostra o seu pecado,
você engana as pessoas com palavras espertas.
6 Não sou eu que o acuso, são as suas próprias palavras;
o que você diz é o que o condena.
7 “Pensa que foi o primeiro homem a nascer?
Que veio ao mundo antes das montanhas?
8 Que sabe os planos secretos de Deus?
Pensa que a sabedoria é só sua?
9 O que sabe você mais do que nós?
O que entende você que nós não entendemos?
10 Fomos ensinados por homens de muita idade,
pessoas mais velhas do que o seu pai.
11 Por que não dá importância ao consolo que vem de Deus,
às nossas palavras cheias de carinho?
12 Por que o seu coração o engana?
Por que não vê a verdade?
13 Por que descarrega a sua ira contra Deus?
Por que saem essas acusações dos seus lábios?
14 Há alguma pessoa que seja pura?
Há algum ser humano que seja correto diante de Deus?
15 Se Deus não considera os seus seres celestiais[a] fiéis,
se aos olhos de Deus nem os que habitam nos céus são puros,
16 quanto mais o homem
que é impuro e corrupto,
e que bebe a maldade como se fosse água?
17 “Ouça, vou lhe explicar uma coisa.
Vou lhe dizer o que descobri.
18 É uma coisa que os sábios ensinaram,
e que já era conhecida pelos antepassados deles,
19 e foi dada a terra a eles,
antes de haver qualquer estrangeiro entre eles:
20 os maus sofrem toda a vida,
assim como os que fazem o mal aos outros.
21 Eles estão sempre ouvindo vozes que os deixam com medo,
e no meio da sua prosperidade, são atacado por ladrões.
22 Vivem sem poder escapar da escuridão,
e estão destinados a morrer violentamente.
23 Andam de um lado para o outro,
os abutres esperam para comê-los,
eles sabem que a escuridão da morte está perto.
24 A aflição e a angústia enchem os maus de pavor,
e cercam os tiranos como um rei pronto para atacá-los.
25 A escuridão está perto deles porque levantaram a mão contra Deus,
desafiaram o Todo-Poderoso,
26 atirando-se contra Deus,
com um escudo grande e forte.
27 “Os maus podem ser ricos e estar bem alimentados,
com os seus rostos gordos e as suas cinturas largas,
28 mas as cidades onde vivem serão destruídas,
e eles irão viver entre as ruínas de casas desabitadas.
29 Nem o mau nem a sua riqueza
durarão para sempre.
Os seus bens não cobrirão a terra.
30 Ele não poderá escapar da escuridão.
O fogo queimará os seus galhos
e o sopro da boca de Deus os espalhará.
31 O mau se engana confiando no que não tem valor,
por isso a sua recompensa não terá valor.
32 Ele será como a árvore que morre antes do tempo,
e os seus ramos nunca voltam a ser verdes.
33 Será como a videira que perde as uvas sem amadurecerem,
como a oliveira que deixa cair a flor.
34 Porque os planos dos maus não darão certo:
as suas casas, construídas com subornos,
serão consumidas pelo fogo.
35 Eles dão nascimento à maldade e dão à luz a desgraça.
Enganam os outros e também a si mesmos”.

15 Then (A)Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:
2 “Should a wise man answer with empty knowledge,
And fill [a]himself with the east wind?
3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk,
Or by speeches with which he can do no good?
4 Yes, you cast off fear,
And restrain [b]prayer before God.
5 For your iniquity teaches your mouth,
And you choose the tongue of the crafty.
6 (B)Your own mouth condemns you, and not I;
Yes, your own lips testify against you.
7 “Are you the first man who was born?
(C)Or were you made before the hills?
8 (D)Have you heard the counsel of God?
Do you limit wisdom to yourself?
9 (E)What do you know that we do not know?
What do you understand that is not in us?
10 (F)Both the gray-haired and the aged are among us,
Much older than your father.
11 Are the consolations of God too small for you,
And the word spoken [c]gently with you?
12 Why does your heart carry you away,
And [d]what do your eyes wink at,
13 That you turn your spirit against God,
And let such words go out of your mouth?
14 “What(G) is man, that he could be pure?
And he who is born of a woman, that he could be righteous?
15 (H)If God puts no trust in His saints,
And the heavens are not pure in His sight,
16 (I)How much less man, who is abominable and filthy,
(J)Who drinks iniquity like water!
17 “I will tell you, hear me;
What I have seen I will declare,
18 What wise men have told,
Not hiding anything received (K)from their fathers,
19 To whom alone the [e]land was given,
And (L)no alien passed among them:
20 The wicked man writhes with pain all his days,
(M)And the number of years is hidden from the oppressor.
21 [f]Dreadful sounds are in his ears;
(N)In prosperity the destroyer comes upon him.
22 He does not believe that he will (O)return from darkness,
For a sword is waiting for him.
23 He (P)wanders about for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’
He knows (Q)that a day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24 Trouble and anguish make him afraid;
They overpower him, like a king ready for [g]battle.
25 For he stretches out his hand against God,
And acts defiantly against the Almighty,
26 Running stubbornly against Him
With his strong, embossed shield.
27 “Though(R) he has covered his face with his fatness,
And made his waist heavy with fat,
28 He dwells in desolate cities,
In houses which no one inhabits,
Which are destined to become ruins.
29 He will not be rich,
Nor will his wealth (S)continue,
Nor will his possessions overspread the earth.
30 He will not depart from darkness;
The flame will dry out his branches,
And (T)by the breath of His mouth he will go away.
31 Let him not (U)trust in futile things, deceiving himself,
For futility will be his reward.
32 It will be accomplished (V)before his time,
And his branch will not be green.
33 He will shake off his unripe grape like a vine,
And cast off his blossom like an olive tree.
34 For the company of hypocrites will be barren,
And fire will consume the tents of bribery.
35 (W)They conceive trouble and bring forth futility;
Their womb prepares deceit.”

o con palabras sin provecho?
4 Ciertamente, tú rechazas el temor,
e impides la meditación delante de Dios.
5 Porque tu iniquidad(B) enseña a tu boca,
y escoges el lenguaje de los astutos(C).
6 Tu propia boca, y no yo, te condena,
y tus propios labios testifican contra ti(D).
7 ¿Fuiste tú el primer hombre en nacer,
o fuiste dado a luz antes que las colinas(E)?
8 ¿Oyes tú el secreto[b] de Dios(F),
y retienes para ti la sabiduría?
9 ¿Qué sabes tú que nosotros no sepamos?
¿Qué entiendes tú que nosotros no entendamos[c](G)?
10 También entre nosotros hay canosos y ancianos(H)
de más edad que tu padre.
11 ¿Te parecen poco[d] los consuelos de Dios(I),
y la palabra(J) hablada a ti con dulzura?
12 ¿Por qué te arrebata el corazón(K),
y por qué centellean tus ojos,
13 para volver tu espíritu contra Dios
y dejar salir de tu boca tales palabras?
14 ¿Qué es el hombre para que sea puro,
o el nacido de mujer para que sea justo(L)?
15 He aquí, Dios no confía en sus santos(M),
y ni los cielos son puros ante sus ojos(N);
16 ¡cuánto menos el hombre, un ser abominable y corrompido(O),
que bebe como agua la iniquidad(P)!
17 Yo te mostraré, escúchame,
y te contaré lo que he visto;
18 lo que los sabios han dado a conocer,
sin ocultar nada de sus padres(Q);
19 a ellos solos se les dio la tierra,
y ningún extranjero pasó entre ellos.
20 Todos sus días el impío se retuerce de dolor(R),
y contados están los años reservados[e](S) para el tirano.
21 Ruidos de espanto[f] hay en sus oídos,
mientras está en paz, el destructor viene sobre él(T).
22 Él no cree que volverá de las tinieblas(U),
y que está destinado para la espada(V).
23 Vaga en busca de pan, diciendo: «¿Dónde está?».
Sabe que es inminente[g] el día de las tinieblas(W).
24 La ansiedad y la angustia lo aterran,
lo dominan como rey dispuesto para el ataque;
25 porque él ha extendido su mano contra Dios,
y se porta con soberbia(X) contra el Todopoderoso[h].
26 Corre contra Él con cuello erguido,
con su escudo macizo[i];
27 porque ha cubierto su rostro de grosura(Y),
se le han hecho pliegues de grasa sobre sus lomos,
28 y ha vivido en ciudades desoladas,
en casas inhabitables,
destinadas a convertirse en ruinas[j](Z).
29 No se enriquecerá, ni sus bienes perdurarán(AA),
ni su espiga[k] se inclinará a tierra.
30 No escapará[l] de las tinieblas(AB),
secará la llama sus renuevos,
y por el soplo de su boca[m] desaparecerá(AC).
31 Que no confíe en la vanidad(AD), engañándose a sí mismo,
pues vanidad será su recompensa[n].
32 Antes de su tiempo(AE) se cumplirá,
y la hoja de su palmera no reverdecerá(AF).
33 Dejará caer su agraz como la vid,
y como el olivo arrojará su flor(AG).
34 Porque estéril es la compañía de los impíos(AH),
y el fuego consume las tiendas del corrupto[o](AI).
35 Conciben malicia[p], dan a luz iniquidad,
y en su mente[q] traman engaño(AJ).

and fill themselves with the east wind?(A)
3 Should they argue in unprofitable talk
or in words that can do no good?
4 But you are doing away with the fear of God
and hindering meditation before God.
5 For your iniquity teaches your mouth,
and you choose the tongue of the crafty.(B)
6 Your own mouth condemns you, not I;
your own lips testify against you.(C)
7 “Are you the firstborn of the human race?
Were you brought forth before the hills?(D)
8 Have you listened in the council of God?
And do you limit wisdom to yourself?(E)
9 What do you know that we do not know?
What do you understand that is not clear to us?(F)
10 The gray-haired and the aged are on our side,
those older than your father.(G)
11 Are the consolations of God too small for you
or the word that deals gently with you?(H)
12 Why does your heart carry you away,
and why do your eyes flash,[a]
13 so that you turn your spirit against God,
and let such words go out of your mouth?(I)
14 What are mortals, that they can be clean?
Or those born of woman, that they can be righteous?(J)
15 God puts no trust even in his holy ones,
and the heavens are not clean in his sight;(K)
16 how much less one who is abominable and corrupt,
one who drinks iniquity like water!(L)
17 “I will show you; listen to me;
what I have seen I will declare—
18 what sages have told
and their ancestors have not hidden,(M)
19 to whom alone the land was given,
and no stranger passed among them.
20 The wicked writhe in pain all their days,
through all the years that are laid up for the ruthless.(N)
21 Terrifying sounds are in their ears;
in prosperity the destroyer will come upon them.(O)
22 They despair of returning from darkness,
and they are destined for the sword.(P)
23 They wander abroad for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’
They know that a day of darkness is ready at hand;(Q)
24 distress and anguish terrify them;
they prevail against them like a king prepared for battle.
25 Because they stretched out their hands against God
and bid defiance to the Almighty,[b](R)
26 running stubbornly against him
with a thickly bossed shield;
27 because they have covered their faces with their fat
and gathered fat upon their loins,(S)
28 they will live in desolate cities,
in houses that no one should inhabit,
houses destined to become heaps of ruins;
29 they will not be rich, and their wealth will not endure,
nor will they strike root in the earth;[c](T)
30 they will not escape from darkness;
the flame will dry up their shoots,
and their blossom[d] will be swept away by the wind.(U)
31 Let them not trust in emptiness, deceiving themselves,
for emptiness will be their recompense.(V)
32 It will be paid in full before their time,

34 For the company of the godless is barren,
and fire consumes the tents of bribery.(Y)
