10 Écoutez la parole que l'Éternel vous adresse, Maison d'Israël!
2 Ainsi parle l'Éternel: N'imitez pas la voie des nations, Et ne craignez pas les signes du ciel, Parce que les nations les craignent.
3 Car les coutumes des peuples ne sont que vanité. On coupe le bois dans la forêt; La main de l'ouvrier le travaille avec la hache;
4 On l'embellit avec de l'argent et de l'or, On le fixe avec des clous et des marteaux, Pour qu'il ne branle pas.
5 Ces dieux sont comme une colonne massive, et ils ne parlent point; On les porte, parce qu'ils ne peuvent marcher. Ne les craignez pas, car ils ne sauraient faire aucun mal, Et ils sont incapables de faire du bien.
6 Nul n'est semblable à toi, ô Éternel! Tu es grand, et ton nom est grand par ta puissance.
7 Qui ne te craindrait, roi des nations? C'est à toi que la crainte est due; Car, parmi tous les sages des nations et dans tous leurs royaumes, Nul n'est semblable à toi.
8 Tous ensemble, ils sont stupides et insensés; Leur science n'est que vanité, c'est du bois!
9 On apporte de Tarsis des lames d'argent, et d'Uphaz de l'or, L'ouvrier et la main de l'orfèvre les mettent en oeuvre; Les vêtements de ces dieux sont d'étoffes teintes en bleu et en pourpre, Tous sont l'ouvrage d'habiles artisans.
10 Mais l'Éternel est Dieu en vérité, Il est un Dieu vivant et un roi éternel; La terre tremble devant sa colère, Et les nations ne supportent pas sa fureur.
11 Vous leur parlerez ainsi: Les dieux qui n'ont point fait les cieux et la terre Disparaîtront de la terre et de dessous les cieux.
12 Il a créé la terre par sa puissance, Il a fondé le monde par sa sagesse, Il a étendu les cieux par son intelligence.
13 A sa voix, les eaux mugissent dans les cieux; Il fait monter les nuages des extrémités de la terre, Il produit les éclairs et la pluie, Il tire le vent de ses trésors.
14 Tout homme devient stupide par sa science, Tout orfèvre est honteux de son image taillée; Car ses idoles ne sont que mensonge, Il n'y a point en elles de souffle,
15 Elles sont une chose de néant, une oeuvre de tromperie; Elles périront, quand viendra le châtiment.
16 Celui qui est la part de Jacob n'est pas comme elles; Car c'est lui qui a tout formé, Et Israël est la tribu de son héritage. L'Éternel des armées est son nom.
17 Emporte du pays ce qui t'appartient, Toi qui es assise dans la détresse!
18 Car ainsi parle l'Éternel: Voici, cette fois je vais lancer au loin les habitants du pays; Je vais les serrer de près, afin qu'on les atteigne. -
19 Malheur à moi! je suis brisée! Ma plaie est douloureuse! Mais je dis: C'est une calamité qui m'arrive, Je la supporterai!
20 Ma tente est détruite, Tous mes cordages sont rompus; Mes fils m'ont quittée, ils ne sont plus; Je n'ai personne qui dresse de nouveau ma tente, Qui relève mes pavillons. -
21 Les bergers ont été stupides, Ils n'ont pas cherché l'Éternel; C'est pour cela qu'ils n'ont point prospéré, Et que tous leurs troupeaux se dispersent.
22 Voici, une rumeur se fait entendre; C'est un grand tumulte qui vient du septentrion, Pour réduire les villes de Juda en un désert, En un repaire de chacals. -
23 Je le sais, ô Éternel! La voie de l'homme n'est pas en son pouvoir; Ce n'est pas à l'homme, quand il marche, A diriger ses pas.
24 Châtie-moi, ô Éternel! mais avec équité, Et non dans ta colère, de peur que tu ne m'anéantisses.
25 Répands ta fureur sur les nations qui ne te connaissent pas, Et sur les peuples qui n'invoquent pas ton nom! Car ils dévorent Jacob, ils le dévorent, ils le consument, Ils ravagent sa demeure.

Los dioses falsos y el Dios verdadero
10 Oíd la palabra que el Señor os habla, oh casa de Israel. 2 Así dice el Señor:
El camino de las naciones(A) no aprendáis,
ni de las señales de los cielos os aterroricéis,
aunque las naciones les tengan terror.
3 Porque las costumbres de los pueblos son vanidad(B);
pues un leño del bosque es cortado,
lo trabajan las manos de un artífice con la azuela(C);
4 con plata y oro lo adornan(D),
con clavos y martillos lo aseguran
para que no se mueva(E).
5 Como los espantapájaros de un pepinar,
sus ídolos[a] no hablan(F);
tienen que ser transportados,
porque no andan(G).
No les tengáis miedo,
porque no pueden hacer ningún mal,
ni tampoco hacer bien alguno(H).
6 No hay nadie como tú, oh Señor(I);
grande eres tú, y grande es tu nombre en poderío(J).
7 ¿Quién no te temerá, oh Rey de las naciones(K)?
Porque esto se te debe.
Porque entre todos los sabios de las naciones,
y en todos sus reinos(L),
no hay nadie como tú(M).
8 Mas ellos a una son torpes y necios(N)
en su enseñanza de vanidades[b], pues su ídolo es un leño.
9 Plata(O) laminada es traída de Tarsis(P)
y oro de Ufaz(Q),
obra de un artífice y de manos de un orfebre;
su vestido es de violeta y púrpura;
todo ello obra de peritos(R).
10 Pero el Señor es el Dios verdadero(S);
Él es el Dios vivo(T) y el Rey eterno(U).
Ante su enojo tiembla la tierra(V),
y las naciones son impotentes ante su indignación(W).
11 [c]Así les diréis: Los dioses que no hicieron los cielos(X) ni la tierra, perecerán de la tierra(Y) y de debajo de los[d] cielos.
12 Él es el que hizo la tierra(Z) con su poder,
el que estableció el mundo(AA) con su sabiduría,
y con su inteligencia extendió los cielos(AB).
13 Cuando Él emite su voz, hay estruendo de aguas(AC) en los cielos;
Él hace subir las nubes(AD) desde los extremos de la tierra,
hace los relámpagos para la lluvia
y saca el viento de sus depósitos(AE).
14 Todo hombre es torpe, falto de conocimiento;
todo orfebre se avergüenza de su ídolo[e];
porque engañosas son sus imágenes fundidas,
y no hay aliento en ellas(AF).
15 Vanidad son(AG), obra ridícula,
en el tiempo de su castigo perecerán(AH).
16 No es como esta la porción de Jacob(AI);
porque Él es el Hacedor[f] de todo(AJ),
e Israel es la tribu de su heredad(AK);
el Señor de los ejércitos es su nombre(AL).
17 Recoge del suelo tus pertenencias,
tú que moras sitiada(AM).
18 Porque así dice el Señor:
He aquí, en esta ocasión, tiro con honda(AN) a los habitantes de la tierra,
y los afligiré
para que me puedan hallar.
19 ¡Ay de mí(AO), por mi quebranto!
Mi herida(AP) es incurable.
Mas yo me dije: De cierto esta es una enfermedad,
y debo soportarla(AQ).
20 Mi tienda está destruida(AR),
y todas mis cuerdas rotas;
mis hijos me han abandonado y no queda ninguno(AS).
No hay quien(AT) plante de nuevo mi tienda
ni coloque mis cortinas.
21 Porque los pastores se han entorpecido
y no han buscado al Señor(AU);
por tanto, no prosperaron,
y todo su rebaño se ha dispersado(AV).
22 ¡Se oye un rumor(AW)! He aquí, viene
una gran conmoción desde la tierra del norte(AX),
para convertir las ciudades de Judá
en desolación, en guarida de chacales(AY).
23 Yo sé, oh Señor, que no depende del hombre su camino(AZ),
ni de quien anda el dirigir sus pasos(BA).
24 Repréndeme, oh Señor, pero con justicia,
no con tu ira(BB), no sea que me reduzcas a nada.
25 Derrama furor sobre las naciones que no te conocen(BC),
y sobre los linajes que no invocan tu nombre(BD);
porque han devorado a Jacob,
lo han devorado y lo han consumido,
y han asolado su morada[g](BE).

God and Idols(A)
10 Hear what the Lord says to you, people of Israel. 2 This is what the Lord says:
“Do not learn the ways of the nations(B)
or be terrified by signs(C) in the heavens,
though the nations are terrified by them.
3 For the practices of the peoples are worthless;
they cut a tree out of the forest,
and a craftsman(D) shapes it with his chisel.(E)
4 They adorn it with silver(F) and gold;
they fasten it with hammer and nails
so it will not totter.(G)
5 Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field,
their idols cannot speak;(H)
they must be carried
because they cannot walk.(I)
Do not fear them;
they can do no harm(J)
nor can they do any good.”(K)
6 No one is like you,(L) Lord;
you are great,(M)
and your name is mighty in power.
7 Who should not fear(N) you,
King of the nations?(O)
This is your due.
Among all the wise leaders of the nations
and in all their kingdoms,
there is no one like you.
8 They are all senseless(P) and foolish;(Q)
they are taught by worthless wooden idols.(R)
9 Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish(S)
and gold from Uphaz.
What the craftsman and goldsmith have made(T)
is then dressed in blue and purple—
all made by skilled workers.
10 But the Lord is the true God;
he is the living God,(U) the eternal King.(V)
When he is angry,(W) the earth trembles;(X)
the nations cannot endure his wrath.(Y)
11 “Tell them this: ‘These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish(Z) from the earth and from under the heavens.’”[a]
12 But God made(AA) the earth(AB) by his power;
he founded the world by his wisdom(AC)
and stretched out the heavens(AD) by his understanding.
13 When he thunders,(AE) the waters in the heavens roar;
he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth.
He sends lightning(AF) with the rain(AG)
and brings out the wind from his storehouses.(AH)
14 Everyone is senseless and without knowledge;
every goldsmith is shamed(AI) by his idols.
The images he makes are a fraud;(AJ)
they have no breath in them.
15 They are worthless,(AK) the objects of mockery;
when their judgment comes, they will perish.
16 He who is the Portion(AL) of Jacob is not like these,
for he is the Maker of all things,(AM)
including Israel, the people of his inheritance(AN)—
the Lord Almighty is his name.(AO)
Coming Destruction
17 Gather up your belongings(AP) to leave the land,
you who live under siege.
18 For this is what the Lord says:
“At this time I will hurl(AQ) out
those who live in this land;
I will bring distress(AR) on them
so that they may be captured.”
19 Woe to me because of my injury!
My wound(AS) is incurable!
Yet I said to myself,
“This is my sickness, and I must endure(AT) it.”
20 My tent(AU) is destroyed;
all its ropes are snapped.
My children are gone from me and are no more;(AV)
no one is left now to pitch my tent
or to set up my shelter.
21 The shepherds(AW) are senseless(AX)
and do not inquire of the Lord;(AY)
so they do not prosper(AZ)
and all their flock is scattered.(BA)
22 Listen! The report is coming—
a great commotion from the land of the north!(BB)
It will make the towns of Judah desolate,(BC)
a haunt of jackals.(BD)
Jeremiah’s Prayer
23 Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own;
it is not for them to direct their steps.(BE)
24 Discipline me, Lord, but only in due measure—
not in your anger,(BF)
or you will reduce me to nothing.(BG)
25 Pour out your wrath on the nations(BH)
that do not acknowledge you,
on the peoples who do not call on your name.(BI)
For they have devoured(BJ) Jacob;
they have devoured him completely
and destroyed his homeland.(BK)

2 Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
5 They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
6 Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O Lord; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.
7 Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.
8 But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.
9 Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.
10 But the Lord is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.
11 Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.
12 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.
13 When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.
14 Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.
15 They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
16 The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: The Lord of hosts is his name.
17 Gather up thy wares out of the land, O inhabitant of the fortress.
18 For thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so.
19 Woe is me for my hurt! my wound is grievous; but I said, Truly this is a grief, and I must bear it.
20 My tabernacle is spoiled, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth of me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.
21 For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the Lord: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered.
22 Behold, the noise of the bruit is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons.
23 O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.
24 O Lord, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.
25 Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have eaten up Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him, and have made his habitation desolate.
