Lazarova smrt
11 Neki je čovjek po imenu Lazar bio bolestan. Bio je iz Betanije, mjesta u kojem su živjele Marija i njezina sestra Marta. 2 Marija je žena koja je kasnije pomazala Gospodinove noge skupocjenim uljem i potom ih osušila svojom kosom. Bolesni Lazar bio joj je brat. 3 Sestre su poslale poruku Isusu: »Gospodine, tvoj je voljeni prijatelj bolestan.«
4 Kad je Isus to čuo, rekao je: »Ta bolest neće donijeti smrt, već slavu Bogu—da se proslavi Božji Sin.« 5 Isus je volio Martu, njezinu sestru i Lazara. 6 Kad je čuo da je Lazar bolestan, ostao je još dva dana ondje gdje se nalazio. 7 Tada je rekao svojim učenicima: »Hajdemo ponovo u Judeju!«
8 »Učitelju«, odgovorili su mu oni, »Židovi su te još nedavno ondje htjeli kamenovati, a ti opet ideš onamo!«
9 Isus je odvratio: »Zar dnevna svjetlost ne traje dvanaest sati? Tko hoda danju, ne posrće jer ima svjetlo ovoga svijeta. 10 A tko hoda noću, posrće jer nema svjetla da mu osvijetli put.«
11 Tako im je rekao i potom nastavio: »Naš je prijatelj Lazar zaspao, a ja ga idem probuditi.«
12 »Gospodine«, odgovorili su mu učenici, »ako spava, ozdravit će.«
13 Isus je pritom mislio na Lazarovu smrt, a učenici su razumjeli da govori kako Lazar stvarno spava. 14 Tada im je Isus otvoreno rekao: »Lazar je umro. 15 Zbog vas mi je drago što nisam bio ondje jer ćete sad vjerovati. Ali, hajdemo sada k njemu!«
16 Toma, zvani Blizanac, rekao je ostalim učenicima: »Hajdemo i mi s njim umrijeti!«
Isus stiže u Betaniju
17 Kad je Isus došao u Betaniju, doznao je da Lazar već četiri dana leži u grobu. 18 Betanija je bila udaljena od Jeruzalema jedva tri kilometra[a]. 19 Mnogi su Židovi došli Marti i Mariji izraziti sućut zbog smrti njihovog brata.
20 Kad je Marta čula da dolazi Isus, pošla mu je u susret. Marija je ostala kod kuće. 21 Marta je rekla Isusu: »Gospodine, da si bio ovdje, moj brat ne bi umro. 22 Ali ja znam da će ti Bog čak i sada dati što god od njega zatražiš.«
23 »Tvoj će brat ustati i bit će opet živ«, rekao joj je Isus.
24 A Marta mu je rekla: »Znam da će ponovo oživjeti u posljednji dan, kad svi uskrsnu.«
25 »Ja sam uskrsnuće i život«, rekao joj je Isus. »Tko u mene vjeruje, živjet će i ako umre. 26 Svatko tko živi i vjeruje u mene sigurno neće nikada umrijeti. Vjeruješ li to?«
27 »Da, Gospodine!« odgovorila mu je. »Vjerujem da si ti Krist, Božji Sin, koji je trebao doći na svijet.«
28 Nakon što je to rekla, Marta je otišla po svoju sestru Mariju i potiho joj rekla: »Učitelj je ovdje i zove te!« 29 Kad je Marija to čula, brzo je ustala i otišla k njemu. 30 Isus još nije bio ušao u selo, nego se nalazio na mjestu gdje ga je susrela Marta. 31 Židovi, koji su bili s Marijom u kući i tješili je, vidjeli su kako hitro ustaje i izlazi. Pomislili su kako ide na grob da ondje plače i pošli su za njom. 32 Marija je otišla na mjesto gdje se nalazio Isus. Kad ga je spazila, bacila mu se pred noge i rekla: »Gospodine, da si bio ovdje, moj brat ne bi umro!«
33 Kad je Isus vidio i nju i Židove, koji su došli s njom, kako plaču, duboko se potresao u duhu 34 i upitao: »Kamo ste ga položili?« »Dođi i vidi, Gospodine«, odvratili su mu.
35 A Isus je zaplakao.
36 »Gledajte kako ga je volio«, govorili su Židovi.
37 »Otvorio je oči slijepcu«, govorili su neki. »Zar nije mogao učiniti nešto da spriječi Lazarovu smrt?«
38 Isus se ponovo duboko potresao.
Lazar ustaje
Isus je došao do groba u kojem je bio Lazar. To je zapravo bila spilja, a na ulazu u nju bio je navaljen veliki kamen. 39 »Uklonite kamen!« zapovjedio je Isus.
»Gospodine, sigurno već zaudara«, rekla je Marta, pokojnikova sestra. »Pokopan je prije četiri dana!«
40 »Nisam li ti rekao«, odvratio joj je Isus, »da ćeš vidjeti Božje veličanstvo[b] ako budeš vjerovala?«
41 Tada su odmaknuli kamen. Isus je pogledao prema nebu i rekao: »Hvala ti, Oče, što si me čuo. 42 Znam da me ti uvijek uslišavaš. Rekao sam to zbog ovih koji me okružuju. Ja želim da oni povjeruju da si me ti poslao.« 43 Kada je to izgovorio, glasno je povikao: »Lazare, izađi!« 44 I mrtvac je izašao. Ruke i noge bile su mu omotane lanenim zavojima, a lice prekriveno lanenim platnom.
Isus im je rekao: »Razvežite ga i pustite da ide!«
Zavjera protiv Isusa
(Mt 26,1-5; Mk 14,1-2; Lk 22,1-2)
45 Tada su mnogi od Židova, koji su došli s Marijom i vidjeli što se dogodilo, povjerovali u Isusa. 46 Ali neki od njih otišli su farizejima i izvijestili ih o onome što je učinio Isus. 47 Tada su vodeći svećenici i farizeji sazvali Veliko vijeće. »Što da radimo?« pitali su se. »Ovaj čovjek čini tolike čudesne znakove. 48 Ako mu dopustimo da tako nastavi, svi će povjerovati u njega. Tada će doći Rimljani i uništiti i naš Hram i naš narod.«
49 Tu je bio i Kaifa. On je te godine bio vrhovni svećenik. Rekao im je: »Ne znate o čemu govorite. 50 Bolje je da jedan čovjek umre za sve nego da bude uništen čitav narod. Zar ne shvaćate?«
51 Kaifa to nije rekao sâm od sebe. Budući da je te godine bio vrhovni svećenik, prorekao je da će Isus umrijeti za židovski narod. 52 I ne samo za židovski narod nego i za to da ujedini svu Božju djecu, rasutu diljem svijeta.
53 Od toga su dana židovski vođe počeli smišljati da ubiju Isusa. 54 Isus se stoga nije više javno kretao među Židovima, nego je otišao u kraj blizu pustinje, u grad zvan Efraim. Ondje je boravio sa svojim učenicima.
55 Bližio se židovski blagdan Pashe i mnogi su se stanovnici iz cijele zemlje zaputili u Jeruzalem. Htjeli su obaviti obredno čišćenje prije blagdana. 56 Tražili su Isusa i u Hramu propitkivali jedni druge: »Što mislite, hoće li doći na svečanost?« 57 Glavni su svećenici i farizeji, naime, izdali zapovijed da, ako netko zna gdje se Isus nalazi, mora to i prijaviti kako bi ga oni mogli uhititi.

The Death of Lazarus
11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany,(A) the village of Mary and her sister Martha.(B) 2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)(C) 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love(D) is sick.”
4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory(E) so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, 7 and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”(F)
8 “But Rabbi,”(G) they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you,(H) and yet you are going back?”
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.(I) 10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”
11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend(J) Lazarus has fallen asleep;(K) but I am going there to wake him up.”
12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” 13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.(L)
14 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
16 Then Thomas(M) (also known as Didymus[a]) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus
17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.(N) 18 Now Bethany(O) was less than two miles[b] from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.(P) 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.(Q)
21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.(R) 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”(S)
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection(T) at the last day.”(U)
25 Jesus said to her, “I am(V) the resurrection and the life.(W) The one who believes(X) in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing(Y) in me will never die.(Z) Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah,(AA) the Son of God,(AB) who is to come into the world.”(AC)
28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher(AD) is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.(AE) 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her,(AF) noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”(AG)
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved(AH) in spirit and troubled.(AI) 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked.
“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.
35 Jesus wept.(AJ)
36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”(AK)
37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man(AL) have kept this man from dying?”(AM)
Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
38 Jesus, once more deeply moved,(AN) came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.(AO) 39 “Take away the stone,” he said.
“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”(AP)
40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe,(AQ) you will see the glory of God?”(AR)
41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up(AS) and said, “Father,(AT) I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here,(AU) that they may believe that you sent me.”(AV)
43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”(AW) 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen,(AX) and a cloth around his face.(AY)
Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary,(AZ) and had seen what Jesus did,(BA) believed in him.(BB) 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees(BC) called a meeting(BD) of the Sanhedrin.(BE)
“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.(BF) 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”
49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas,(BG) who was high priest that year,(BH) spoke up, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”(BI)
51 He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52 and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.(BJ) 53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life.(BK)
54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea.(BL) Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(BM) many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing(BN) before the Passover. 56 They kept looking for Jesus,(BO) and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?” 57 But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.

The Death of Lazarus
11 (A)A man named Lazarus, who lived in Bethany, became sick. Bethany was the town where Mary and her sister Martha lived. (2 (B)This Mary was the one who poured the perfume on the Lord's feet and wiped them with her hair; it was her brother Lazarus who was sick.) 3 The sisters sent Jesus a message: “Lord, your dear friend is sick.”
4 When Jesus heard it, he said, “The final result of this sickness will not be the death of Lazarus; this has happened in order to bring glory to God, and it will be the means by which the Son of God will receive glory.”
5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 Yet when he received the news that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was for two more days. 7 Then he said to the disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”
8 “Teacher,” the disciples answered, “just a short time ago the people there wanted to stone you; and are you planning to go back?”
9 Jesus said, “A day has twelve hours, doesn't it? So those who walk in broad daylight do not stumble, for they see the light of this world. 10 But if they walk during the night they stumble, because they have no light.” 11 Jesus said this and then added, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I will go and wake him up.”
12 The disciples answered, “If he is asleep, Lord, he will get well.”
13 Jesus meant that Lazarus had died, but they thought he meant natural sleep. 14 So Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 but for your sake I am glad that I was not with him, so that you will believe. Let us go to him.”
16 Thomas (called the Twin) said to his fellow disciples, “Let us all go along with the Teacher, so that we may die with him!”
Jesus the Resurrection and the Life
17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had been buried four days before. 18 Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, 19 and many Judeans had come to see Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother's death.
20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “If you had been here, Lord, my brother would not have died! 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask him for.”
23 “Your brother will rise to life,” Jesus told her.
24 (C)“I know,” she replied, “that he will rise to life on the last day.”
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me will live, even though they die; 26 and those who live and believe in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord!” she answered. “I do believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”
Jesus Weeps
28 After Martha said this, she went back and called her sister Mary privately. “The Teacher is here,” she told her, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up and hurried out to meet him. (30 Jesus had not yet arrived in the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him.) 31 The people who were in the house with Mary comforting her followed her when they saw her get up and hurry out. They thought that she was going to the grave to weep there.
32 Mary arrived where Jesus was, and as soon as she saw him, she fell at his feet. “Lord,” she said, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died!”
33 Jesus saw her weeping, and he saw how the people with her were weeping also; his heart was touched, and he was deeply moved. 34 “Where have you buried him?” he asked them.
“Come and see, Lord,” they answered.
35 Jesus wept. 36 “See how much he loved him!” the people said.
37 But some of them said, “He gave sight to the blind man, didn't he? Could he not have kept Lazarus from dying?”
Lazarus Is Brought to Life
38 Deeply moved once more, Jesus went to the tomb, which was a cave with a stone placed at the entrance. 39 “Take the stone away!” Jesus ordered.
Martha, the dead man's sister, answered, “There will be a bad smell, Lord. He has been buried four days!”
40 Jesus said to her, “Didn't I tell you that you would see God's glory if you believed?” 41 They took the stone away. Jesus looked up and said, “I thank you, Father, that you listen to me. 42 I know that you always listen to me, but I say this for the sake of the people here, so that they will believe that you sent me.” 43 After he had said this, he called out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 He came out, his hands and feet wrapped in grave cloths, and with a cloth around his face. “Untie him,” Jesus told them, “and let him go.”
The Plot against Jesus(D)
45 Many of the people who had come to visit Mary saw what Jesus did, and they believed in him. 46 But some of them returned to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 So the Pharisees and the chief priests met with the Council and said, “What shall we do? Look at all the miracles this man is performing! 48 If we let him go on in this way, everyone will believe in him, and the Roman authorities will take action and destroy our Temple and our nation!”
49 One of them, named Caiaphas, who was High Priest that year, said, “What fools you are! 50 Don't you realize that it is better for you to have one man die for the people, instead of having the whole nation destroyed?” 51 Actually, he did not say this of his own accord; rather, as he was High Priest that year, he was prophesying that Jesus was going to die for the Jewish people, 52 and not only for them, but also to bring together into one body all the scattered people of God.
53 From that day on the Jewish authorities made plans to kill Jesus. 54 So Jesus did not travel openly in Judea, but left and went to a place near the desert, to a town named Ephraim, where he stayed with the disciples.
55 The time for the Passover Festival was near, and many people went up from the country to Jerusalem to perform the ritual of purification before the festival. 56 They were looking for Jesus, and as they gathered in the Temple, they asked one another, “What do you think? Surely he will not come to the festival, will he?” 57 The chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where Jesus was, he must report it, so that they could arrest him.
