Birth and Rule of the Prince of Peace
9 But there will be no more heavy hearts for those who were suffering. In the past God allowed the lands of Zebulun and Naphtali to be put to shame. In the future He will honor Galilee where those who are not Jews live and where the road to the sea is. It is on the other side of the Jordan. 2 The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. The light will shine on those living in the land of dark shadows. 3 You will make the nation great. You will give them great joy. They will be glad before You, as with the joy of gathering time, and as men have joy when they divide the riches taken after a battle. 4 For You will break the heavy load from their neck and shoulders. You will break the power of those who made it hard for them, as at the battle of Midian. 5 For every shoe of the soldiers in the battle, and every coat rolled in blood, will be burned in the fire. 6 For to us a Child will be born. To us a Son will be given. And the rule of the nations will be on His shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful, Teacher, Powerful God, Father Who Lives Forever, Prince of Peace. 7 There will be no end to His rule and His peace, upon the throne of David and over his nation. He will build it to last and keep it strong with what is right and fair and good from that time and forever. The work of the Lord of All will do this.
Punishment against Israel
8 The Lord sends word against Jacob, and it falls on Israel. 9 And all the people will know it, that is, Ephraim and the people of Samaria. They say with a proud spirit in their hearts, 10 “The clay blocks have fallen down, but we will build again with smooth stones. The sycamore trees have been cut down, but we will put cedar trees in their place.” 11 So the Lord brings men from Rezin to fight against them. He makes those who hate them move to action. 12 The Syrians on the east and the Philistines on the west swallow Israel with an open mouth. Even with this, the Lord’s anger does not turn away. His hand is still held out.
13 Yet the people do not return to Him Who punished them. They do not look to the Lord of All. 14 So the Lord will cut off the head and tail from Israel, both palm branch and river-grass in one day. 15 The leaders and men of honor are the head, and the tail is the false preachers who teach lies. 16 For those who lead these people are leading them from the right way, and those who are led by them are going the wrong way. 17 So the Lord is not pleased with their young men. He does not have pity on their children who have no parents or on their women whose husbands have died. Every one of them is without God and does sinful things. Every mouth speaks foolish words. Even with all this, His anger does not turn away. His hand is still held out.
18 For sin burns like a fire. It burns thistles and thorns. It sets the woods on fire, and they go up in smoke. 19 The land is burned up by the anger of the Lord, and the people are like wood for the fire. No man shows pity on his brother. 20 They take what is on the right hand but still are hungry. They eat what is in the left hand but are not filled. Each of them eats the flesh of his own children. 21 Manasseh goes against Ephraim, and Ephraim goes against Manasseh. And together they are against Judah. Even with all this, the Lord’s anger does not turn away. His hand is still held out.

A Second Description of Immanuel:
The Child Who Is Born to Us
9 Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for the land that was in anguish.[a] In former times, he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time[b] he will cause it to be glorious, along the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, in Galilee of the Gentiles.[c]
2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light.
For those living in the land of the shadow of death, the light has dawned.
3 You have multiplied the nation. You have increased its joy.[d]
They rejoice before you like the joy at harvest time,
like the celebration when people divide the plunder.
4 For you have shattered the yoke that burdened them.
You have broken the bar on their shoulders and
the rod of their oppressor,
as you did in the day of Midian.
5 Every boot that marched in battle
and the garments rolled in blood will be burned.
They will be fuel for the fire.
6 For to us a child is born.
To us a son is given.
The authority to rule will rest on his shoulders.
He will be named:
Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God,
Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace.
7 There will be no limit to his authority
and no end to the peace he brings.
He will rule on David’s throne and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness
from now on, into eternity.
The zeal of the Lord of Armies will accomplish this.
Judgment on Aram and Samaria
8 The Lord sent a word against Jacob,
and it falls upon Israel.
9 All the people will know,
including Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,
who say with pride and with an arrogant heart,
10 “The mud bricks have fallen down,
but we will build with cut stone.
The sycamore fig trees have been cut down,
but we will replace them with cedars.”
11 Then the Lord will raise up Rezin’s adversaries against him,
and he will stir up his enemies.
12 Arameans from the east and Philistines from the west
will devour Israel with an open mouth.
Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
and his hand is still stretched out, ready to strike.
13 But the people have not returned to the one who struck them,
nor have they sought the Lord of Armies.
14 Therefore, in one day the Lord will cut off from Israel
head and tail, palm branch and reed.
15 The elder and the honored man are the head,
and the prophet who teaches lies is the tail.
16 It is the leaders of this people who lead them astray,
and those who are led by them are destroyed.
17 Therefore, the Lord will not rejoice over their young men,
nor will he have compassion on their fatherless and widows,
because everyone is godless and an evildoer,
and every mouth speaks foolishness.
Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
and his hand is still stretched out, ready to strike.
18 Now wickedness burns like a fire.
It devours the briers and thorns.
Look, it flares up in the thickets of the forest,
and it swirls upward in a column of smoke.
19 By the wrath of the Lord of Armies, the land is burned up,
and the people are the fuel for the fire.
No one spares his brother.
20 On the right hand they will gobble down food,
but they will still be hungry.
On the left hand they will keep eating, but they will not be satisfied.
Everyone will eat the flesh of his own arm.[e]
21 Manasseh will be against Ephraim, and Ephraim against Manasseh,
and together they will be against Judah.
Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
and his hand is still stretched out, ready to strike.

9 Nevertheless (B)the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed,
As when at (C)first He lightly esteemed
The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
And (D)afterward more heavily oppressed her,
By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
In Galilee of the Gentiles.
2 (E)The people who walked in darkness
Have seen a great light;
Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death,
Upon them a light has shined.
3 You have multiplied the nation
And [a]increased its joy;
They rejoice before You
According to the joy of harvest,
As men rejoice (F)when they divide the spoil.
4 For You have broken the yoke of his burden
And the staff of his shoulder,
The rod of his oppressor,
As in the day of (G)Midian.
5 For every warrior’s [b]sandal from the noisy battle,
And garments rolled in blood,
(H)Will be used for burning and fuel [c]of fire.
6 (I)For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a (J)Son is given;
And (K)the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
(L)Wonderful, Counselor, (M)Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, (N)Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of His government and peace
(O)There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The (P)zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
The Punishment of Samaria
8 The Lord sent a word against (Q)Jacob,
And it has fallen on Israel.
9 All the people will know—
Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria—
Who say in pride and arrogance of heart:
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
But we will rebuild with hewn stones;
The sycamores are cut down,
But we will replace them with cedars.”
11 Therefore the Lord shall set up
The adversaries of Rezin against him,
And spur his enemies on,
12 The Syrians before and the Philistines behind;
And they shall devour Israel with an open mouth.
For all this His anger is not turned away,
But His hand is [d]stretched out still.
13 For the people do not turn to Him who strikes them,
Nor do they seek the Lord of hosts.
14 Therefore the Lord will cut off head and tail from Israel,
Palm branch and bulrush (R)in one day.
15 The elder and honorable, he is the head;
The prophet who teaches lies, he is the tail.
16 For (S)the leaders of this people cause them to err,
And those who are led by them are destroyed.
17 Therefore the Lord (T)will have no joy in their young men,
Nor have mercy on their fatherless and widows;
For everyone is a hypocrite and an evildoer,
And every mouth speaks [e]folly.
(U)For all this His anger is not turned away,
But His hand is stretched out still.
18 For wickedness (V)burns as the fire;
It shall devour the briers and thorns,
And kindle in the thickets of the forest;
They shall mount up like rising smoke.
19 Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts
(W)The land is burned up,
And the people shall be as fuel for the fire;
(X)No man shall spare his brother.
20 And he shall [f]snatch on the right hand
And be hungry;
He shall devour on the left hand
(Y)And not be satisfied;
(Z)Every man shall eat the flesh of his own arm.
21 Manasseh shall devour Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh;
Together they shall be (AA)against Judah.
(AB)For all this His anger is not turned away,

Um menino nos nasceu
9 Contudo, esse tempo de trevas e de desespero não durará para sempre. Ainda que brevemente a terra de Zebulão e de Naftali venha a ficar sob o desprezo e o julgamento de Deus, no futuro esta mesma terra, a Galileia dos gentios, a oeste do Jordão, onde está a estrada para o mar, ficará cheia de glória. 2 O povo que anda nas trevas viu uma grande luz, uma luz que brilhou sobre todos os que vivem na terra da sombra da morte. 3 Multiplicaste este povo e encheste-o de alegria; alegram-se como os ceifeiros, quando chega o tempo da ceifa, ou como os que repartem os despojos depois de vencerem a batalha. 4 Porque quebrarás as cadeias que amarram o teu povo e a vara que os açoita, como quando destruíste as imensas tropas opressoras dos midianitas. 5 Porque nesse glorioso dia de paz não haverá mais distribuição de armamento de guerra, nem de equipamento militar de combate; tudo isso será destruído. 6 Porque um menino nos nasceu; foi-nos dado um filho. O governo está sobre os seus ombros. Estes serão os seus títulos: conselheiro maravilhoso, deus forte, pai para sempre, príncipe da paz. 7 O seu governo de paz e de desenvolvimento nunca terá fim. Ele chefiará com uma justiça e uma honestidade perfeitas, desde o trono de seu pai David. Trará verdadeira justiça e paz a todas as nações do mundo. Isto acontecerá mesmo, pois no seu zelo, o Senhor dos exércitos está especialmente empenhado em que tal se realize!
A ira do Senhor contra Israel
8 O Senhor lançou a sua sentença contra Jacob e ela caiu sobre o reino de Israel. 9 Todo o povo há de ouvi-la, Efraim e os habitantes da Samaria. Eles dizem com soberba e altivez de coração: 10 “Se caíram os tijolos, reconstruiremos com pedras lavradas! Se as figueiras bravas foram cortadas, haveremos de as substituir por cedros!” 11 Contudo, o Senhor suscitou contra eles os adversários de Rezim e incitou contra eles os seus inimigos. 12 Os arameus, pelo leste, os filisteus pelo oeste. Com as suas bocas escancaradas, devorarão Israel.
Mesmo assim, a sua ira não desaparece. A sua mão continua a pesar sobre eles.
13 Porque mesmo depois de todo este castigo, não se arrependeram nem quiseram voltar-se de novo para o Senhor dos exércitos. 14 Por isso, num mesmo dia o Senhor cortará em Israel a cabeça e a cauda, a palma e o junco. 15 O ancião e o homem de respeito são a cabeça; o profeta que ensina a mentira, esse é a cauda. 16 Os líderes deste povo enganam-no e os que são conduzidos ficam desfeitos.
17 Esta é a razão por que o Senhor não tem alegria nos seus jovens, nem piedade das viúvas e dos órfãos, porque as palavras das suas bocas são repugnantes; são maus e mentirosos.
Mesmo assim, a sua ira não desaparece. A sua mão continua a pesar sobre eles.
18 Ele queimará toda esta maldade, todos estes espinhos e sarças; as chamas virão depois também a consumir florestas e o fumo subirá em espiral, por cima do vasto incêndio. 19 A terra ficará enegrecida pelo fogo, como consequência da cólera do Senhor dos exércitos. O próprio povo serve de combustível para o fogo. 20 Cada qual luta com o seu próximo, para poder roubar-lhe comida, e mesmo assim continuarão a ter fome. Acabarão por comer os seus próprios filhos! 21 Manassés contra Efraim e Efraim contra Manassés, e ambos contra Judá.
Mesmo assim, a sua ira não desaparece. A sua mão continua a pesar sobre eles.

on those living in the land of deep darkness(E)
a light has dawned.(F)
3 You have enlarged the nation(G)
and increased their joy;(H)
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
when dividing the plunder.(I)
4 For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,(J)
you have shattered(K)
the yoke(L) that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,(M)
the rod of their oppressor.(N)
5 Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood

The Lord’s Anger Against Israel
8 The Lord has sent a message(AG) against Jacob;
it will fall on Israel.

Ephraim(AH) and the inhabitants of Samaria(AI)—
who say with pride
and arrogance(AJ) of heart,
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
but we will rebuild with dressed stone;(AK)
the fig(AL) trees have been felled,
but we will replace them with cedars.(AM)”
11 But the Lord has strengthened Rezin’s(AN) foes against them
and has spurred their enemies on.
12 Arameans(AO) from the east and Philistines(AP) from the west
