For to Us a Child Is Born
9 [a] But there will be no (A)gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he (B)brought into contempt the land of (C)Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he (D)has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.[b]
2 [c] (E)The people (F)who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of (G)deep darkness,
on them has light shone.
3 (H)You have multiplied the nation;
you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
as with (I)joy at the harvest,
as they (J)are glad (K)when they divide the spoil.
4 (L)For the yoke of his burden,
(M)and the staff for his shoulder,
the rod of his oppressor,
you have broken as (N)on the day of Midian.
5 (O)For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult
and every garment rolled in blood
will be burned as fuel for the fire.
6 (P)For to us a child is born,
to us (Q)a son is given;
(R)and the government shall be (S)upon[d] his shoulder,
and his name shall be called[e]
Wonderful (T)Counselor, (U)Mighty God,
(V)Everlasting (W)Father, Prince of (X)Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and of peace
(Y)there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
(Z)with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
(AA)The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Judgment on Arrogance and Oppression
8 The Lord has sent a word against Jacob,
and it will fall on Israel;
9 and all the people will know,
(AB)Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,
who say in pride and in arrogance of heart:
10 “The bricks have fallen,
but we will build with dressed stones;
the sycamores have been cut down,
but we will put cedars in their place.”
11 But the Lord raises the adversaries of Rezin against him,
and stirs up his enemies.
12 (AC)The Syrians on the east and (AD)the Philistines on the west
devour Israel with open mouth.
(AE)For all this his anger has not turned away,
and his hand is stretched out still.
13 The people (AF)did not turn to him who struck them,
nor inquire of the Lord of hosts.
14 So the Lord cut off from Israel (AG)head and tail,
palm branch and reed in one day—
15 (AH)the elder and honored man is the head,
and (AI)the prophet who teaches lies is the tail;
16 for those who guide this people have been leading them astray,
and those who are guided by them are swallowed up.
17 Therefore the Lord does not (AJ)rejoice over their young men,
and has no compassion on their fatherless and widows;
for everyone is (AK)godless and an evildoer,
and every mouth speaks (AL)folly.[f]
(AM)For all this his anger has not turned away,
and his hand is stretched out still.
18 For wickedness burns like (AN)a fire;
it consumes briers and thorns;
it kindles the thickets of the forest,
and they roll upward in a column of smoke.
19 Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts
the land is scorched,
and (AO)the people are like fuel for the fire;
(AP)no one spares another.
20 (AQ)They slice meat on the right, but are still hungry,
and they devour on the left, but are not satisfied;
(AR)each devours the flesh of his own arm,
21 Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim devours Manasseh;
together they are (AS)against Judah.
(AT)For all this his anger has not turned away,
and his hand is stretched out still.

9 [a]Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom(A) for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,(B) but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—
2 The people walking in darkness(C)
have seen a great light;(D)
on those living in the land of deep darkness(E)
a light has dawned.(F)
3 You have enlarged the nation(G)
and increased their joy;(H)
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
when dividing the plunder.(I)
4 For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,(J)
you have shattered(K)
the yoke(L) that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,(M)
the rod of their oppressor.(N)
5 Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,(O)
will be fuel for the fire.
6 For to us a child is born,(P)
to us a son is given,(Q)
and the government(R) will be on his shoulders.(S)
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor,(T) Mighty God,(U)
Everlasting(V) Father,(W) Prince of Peace.(X)
7 Of the greatness of his government(Y) and peace(Z)
there will be no end.(AA)
He will reign(AB) on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice(AC) and righteousness(AD)
from that time on and forever.(AE)
The zeal(AF) of the Lord Almighty
will accomplish this.
The Lord’s Anger Against Israel
8 The Lord has sent a message(AG) against Jacob;
it will fall on Israel.
9 All the people will know it—
Ephraim(AH) and the inhabitants of Samaria(AI)—
who say with pride
and arrogance(AJ) of heart,
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
but we will rebuild with dressed stone;(AK)
the fig(AL) trees have been felled,
but we will replace them with cedars.(AM)”
11 But the Lord has strengthened Rezin’s(AN) foes against them
and has spurred their enemies on.
12 Arameans(AO) from the east and Philistines(AP) from the west
have devoured(AQ) Israel with open mouth.
13 But the people have not returned(AT) to him who struck(AU) them,
nor have they sought(AV) the Lord Almighty.
14 So the Lord will cut off from Israel both head and tail,
both palm branch and reed(AW) in a single day;(AX)
15 the elders(AY) and dignitaries(AZ) are the head,
the prophets(BA) who teach lies(BB) are the tail.
16 Those who guide(BC) this people mislead them,
and those who are guided are led astray.(BD)
17 Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men,(BE)
nor will he pity(BF) the fatherless and widows,
for everyone is ungodly(BG) and wicked,(BH)
every mouth speaks folly.(BI)
Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
his hand is still upraised.(BJ)
18 Surely wickedness burns like a fire;(BK)
it consumes briers and thorns,(BL)
it sets the forest thickets ablaze,(BM)
so that it rolls upward in a column of smoke.
19 By the wrath(BN) of the Lord Almighty
the land will be scorched(BO)
and the people will be fuel for the fire;(BP)
they will not spare one another.(BQ)
20 On the right they will devour,
but still be hungry;(BR)
on the left they will eat,(BS)
but not be satisfied.
Each will feed on the flesh of their own offspring[b]:
21 Manasseh will feed on Ephraim, and Ephraim on Manasseh;(BT)
together they will turn against Judah.(BU)
Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
his hand is still upraised.(BV)

2 Dân đi trong bóng tối sẽ thấy ánh sáng lớn;
Ðối với những kẻ sống trong xứ của bóng tử thần,
Một vầng chân quang đã bừng lên chiếu sáng trên họ.
3 Ngài đã làm cho đất nước này được tăng trưởng bội phần;
Ngài đã cho niềm vui của họ gia tăng;
Họ vui mừng trước mặt Ngài, như vui trong mùa gặt, như vui khi chia nhau chiến lợi phẩm,
4 Vì cái ách trên cổ họ,
Ðòn gánh trên vai họ,
Và cây roi của kẻ áp bức họ
Ðã bị Ngài bẻ gãy như trong ngày Mi-đi-an bị đánh bại.
5 Vì mọi giày trận mang ra chiến trường,
Và mọi quân phục đẫm máu quân thù,
Ðều sẽ bị đem ra thiêu hủy như nhiên liệu được dùng để đốt.
6 Vì sẽ có một Con Trẻ sinh cho chúng ta,
Một Con Trai ban cho chúng ta;
Quyền trị vì sẽ đặt trên vai Ngài.
Ngài sẽ được xưng là
Ðấng Mưu Luận Lạ Lùng,
Ðức Chúa Trời Quyền Năng,
Cha Ðời Ðời,
Chúa Bình An.
7 Quyền trị vì của Ngài sẽ thêm mãi không ngừng,
Và hòa bình sẽ kéo dài vô tận
trên ngai của Ða-vít và trong vương quốc của Ngài.
Ngài sẽ thiết lập và duy trì quyền trị vì của Ngài bằng công lý và công chính,
Từ nay cho đến đời đời.
Nguyện lòng nhiệt thành của Chúa các đạo quân sẽ thực hiện điều ấy.
Cơn Giận của Chúa đối với Những Kẻ Lãnh Ðạo Gian Ác
8 Chúa đã truyền một sứ điệp nghịch lại Gia-cốp;
Sứ điệp ấy bao gồm toàn thể I-sơ-ra-ên.
9 Toàn dân sẽ biết đến,
Tức mọi người ở Ép-ra-im và dân chúng ở Sa-ma-ri.
Với lòng đầy kiêu căng và ngạo mạn, họ nói rằng,
10 “Gạch đã đổ xuống, ta sẽ xây lại bằng đá khối;
Những cây sung đã bị đốn hạ, ta sẽ thay thế bằng những cây tùng.”
11 Nhưng Chúa sẽ khiến những kẻ thù của Rê-xin chống lại họ;
Ngài khích động quân thù của họ nổi lên.
12 Phía đông có A-ram, phía tây có Phi-li-tin;
Chúng hả mồm nuốt lấy I-sơ-ra-ên.
Dù như vậy Ngài vẫn chưa nguôi giận;
Tay Ngài còn tiếp tục đưa lên.
13 Thế mà con dân Ngài vẫn không quay về với Ðấng đánh phạt mình;
Họ không tìm kiếm Chúa của các đạo quân.
14 Vì vậy Chúa sẽ chặt đầu chặt đuôi của I-sơ-ra-ên;
Trong một ngày, cả cành cây chà là và cây sậy đều bị chặt.
15 Các trưởng lão và các người quyền quý của họ là đầu;
Các tiên tri dạy dỗ những điều dối trá là đuôi.
16 Những kẻ lãnh đạo dân này đã dẫn họ đi lạc hướng;
Những kẻ dẫn dắt dân này đã đưa họ đến chỗ diệt vong.
17 Vì thế Chúa chẳng thương tiếc các trai tráng của họ;
Ngài cũng chẳng đoái hoài các cô nhi quả phụ của họ,
Bởi ai nấy đều gian manh và tà ác;
Mọi miệng đều nói những lời rồ dại ngông cuồng.
Dù như vậy Ngài vẫn chưa nguôi giận;
Tay Ngài còn tiếp tục đưa lên.
18 Sự gian ác bùng lên như lửa cháy;
Nó đốt thiêu gai góc và bụi gai;
Nó thiêu sạch các bụi rậm trong rừng,
Rồi bốc lên thành một luồng khói đen mù mịt.
19 Vì Chúa các đạo quân nổi cơn thịnh nộ,
Nên đất nước này bị lửa cháy ngập trời,
Còn dân chúng trở thành mồi cho lửa hừng thiêu đốt,
Ðến nỗi anh chị em[a] cũng chẳng thương tiếc nhau.
20 Chúng chộp giật bên phải, nhưng bụng vẫn đói;
Chúng ngoạm lấy bên trái, nhưng bụng vẫn không no;
Thậm chí chúng ăn thịt luôn cả người thân của mình![b]
21 Ma-na-se ăn nuốt Ép-ra-im;
Ép-ra-im ăn nuốt Ma-na-se;
Rồi cả hai cùng đánh Giu-đa.
Dù như vậy Ngài vẫn chưa nguôi giận;
Tay Ngài còn tiếp tục đưa lên.
