Birth and Reign of the Prince of Peace

[a]But there will be no more (A)gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He (B)treated the (C)land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the [b]Gentiles.

[c](D)The people who walk in darkness
Will see a great light;
Those who live in a dark land,
The light will shine on them.
(E)You shall multiply the nation,
You (F)shall [d]increase [e]their gladness;
They will be glad in Your presence
As with the gladness [f]of harvest,
As [g](G)men rejoice when they divide the spoil.
For (H)You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders,
The rod of their (I)oppressor, as [h]at the battle of (J)Midian.
For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult,
And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
For a (K)child will be born to us, a (L)son will be given to us;
And the (M)government will [i]rest (N)on His shoulders;
And His name will be called (O)Wonderful Counselor, (P)Mighty God,
Eternal (Q)Father, Prince of (R)Peace.
There will be (S)no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
On the (T)throne of David and over his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with (U)justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
(V)The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.

God’s Anger with Israel’s Arrogance

The Lord sends a [j]message against Jacob,
And it falls on Israel.
And all the people know it,
That is, (W)Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,
Asserting in pride and in (X)arrogance of heart:
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
But we will (Y)rebuild with smooth stones;
The sycamores have been cut down,
But we will replace them with cedars.”
11 Therefore the Lord raises against them adversaries from (Z)Rezin
And spurs their enemies on,
12 The Arameans on the east and the (AA)Philistines on the west;
And they (AB)devour Israel with [k]gaping jaws.
(AC)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away
And His hand is still stretched out.

13 Yet the people (AD)do not turn back to Him who struck them,
Nor do they (AE)seek the Lord of hosts.
14 So the Lord cuts off (AF)head and tail from Israel,
Both palm branch and bulrush (AG)in a single day.
15 The head is (AH)the elder and honorable man,
And the prophet who teaches (AI)falsehood is the tail.
16 (AJ)For those who guide this people are leading them astray;
And those who are guided by them are [l]brought to confusion.
17 Therefore the Lord does (AK)not take pleasure in their young men,
(AL)Nor does He have pity on their [m]orphans or their widows;
For every one of them is (AM)godless and an (AN)evildoer,
And every (AO)mouth is speaking foolishness.
(AP)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away
And His hand is still stretched out.

18 (AQ)For wickedness burns like a fire;
It consumes briars and thorns;
It even sets the thickets of the forest aflame
And they roll upward in a column of smoke.
19 By the (AR)fury of the Lord of hosts the (AS)land is burned up,
And the (AT)people are like fuel for the fire;
No (AU)man spares his brother.
20 [n]They slice off what is on the right hand but still are (AV)hungry,
And [o]they eat what is on the left hand but they are not satisfied;
Each of them eats the (AW)flesh of his own arm.
21 Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh,
(AX)And together they are against Judah.
(AY)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away
And His hand is still stretched out.

        i dödsskuggans land
            ska ljuset stråla fram.[d]
(C) Du förökar det folk
        som du inte gett[e] stor glädje.
    De ska glädjas inför dig
        som man gläds
            under skördetiden,
    som man jublar när man delar byte.
(D) För du ska bryta
        deras bördors ok,[f]
    deras skuldrors käpp
        och deras plågares stav,
    som på Midjans tid.[g]
(E) Ja, varje stövel buren i stridslarm
        och varje mantel vältrad i blod
    ska brännas upp
        och förtäras av eld.

(F) För ett barn blir oss fött,
        en son blir oss given.
    På hans axlar vilar herradömet,
        och hans namn är:
    Under, Rådgivare[h], Mäktig Gud,
        Evig Far, Fridsfurste.[i]
(G) Så ska herradömet bli stort
    och friden utan slut
        över Davids tron och hans rike.
    Det ska befästas och stödjas
        med rätt och rättfärdighet
            från nu och till evig tid.
    Herren Sebaots lidelse
        ska göra detta.

Herrens vrede mot Israel

Herren sänder ett ord mot Jakob,
        och det slår ner i Israel.
Hela folket ska märka det,
        Efraim och Samarias invånare.
    I stolthet och hjärtats högmod
        säger de:
10 "Tegelstenar har fallit,
    men vi ska bygga upp
        med huggen sten.
    Mullbärsfikonträd[j] har huggits ner,
        men vi ska ersätta dem
            med cedrar."
11 (H) Herren reser upp
        Resins motståndare[k] mot dem
    och eggar upp deras fiender,
12 (I) arameerna från öster
        och filisteerna[l] från väster,
    och de ska sluka Israel
        med glupska gap.
    Med allt detta upphör inte
            hans vrede,
        hans hand är ännu uträckt.

13 (J) För folket vänder inte om
        till honom som slår dem,
    de söker inte Herren Sebaot.
14 (K) Därför ska Herren hugga av
    både huvud och svans
        från Israel,
    både palmtopp och sävstrå,
        allt på samma dag.
15 De äldsta och högst uppsatta
        är huvudet,
    profeten som lär ut lögn
        är svansen.
16 (L) För de som leder detta folk
        vilseleder det,
    och de som låter sig ledas
        går i fördärvet.
17 Därför kan Herren inte glädja sig
        över deras unga män
    eller förbarma sig
        över deras faderlösa och änkor,
    för alla är hycklare
        och gör det som är ont,
            varje mun talar dårskap.
    Med allt detta upphör inte
            hans vrede,
        hans hand är ännu uträckt.

18 Ja, gudlösheten brinner som en eld,
        den förtär tistel och törne.
    Den antänder snårskogen
        så att den går upp
            i höga virvlar av rök.
19 (M) Landet brinner
    genom Herren Sebaots vrede,
        och folket är som ved för elden.
    Ingen skonar sin broder.
20 Man river åt sig till höger
        men förblir hungrig,
    man tar för sig till vänster
        men blir inte mätt.
    Var och en äter köttet
        på sin egen arm:
21 Manasse äter Efraim
    och Efraim Manasse,
        och tillsammans angriper de Juda.
    Med allt detta upphör inte
            hans vrede,
        hans hand är ännu uträckt.

[a]Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom(A) for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,(B) but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—

The Lord’s Anger Against Israel

The Lord has sent a message(AG) against Jacob;
    it will fall on Israel.
All the people will know it—
    Ephraim(AH) and the inhabitants of Samaria(AI)
who say with pride
    and arrogance(AJ) of heart,
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
    but we will rebuild with dressed stone;(AK)
the fig(AL) trees have been felled,
    but we will replace them with cedars.(AM)
11 But the Lord has strengthened Rezin’s(AN) foes against them
    and has spurred their enemies on.
12 Arameans(AO) from the east and Philistines(AP) from the west
    have devoured(AQ) Israel with open mouth.

Yet for all this, his anger(AR) is not turned away,
    his hand is still upraised.(AS)

13 But the people have not returned(AT) to him who struck(AU) them,
    nor have they sought(AV) the Lord Almighty.
14 So the Lord will cut off from Israel both head and tail,
    both palm branch and reed(AW) in a single day;(AX)
15 the elders(AY) and dignitaries(AZ) are the head,
    the prophets(BA) who teach lies(BB) are the tail.
16 Those who guide(BC) this people mislead them,

17 Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men,(BE)

The Government of the Promised Son(A)

Nevertheless (B)the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed,
As when at (C)first He lightly esteemed
The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
And (D)afterward more heavily oppressed her,
By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
In Galilee of the Gentiles.
(E)The people who walked in darkness
Have seen a great light;
Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death,
Upon them a light has shined.

You have multiplied the nation
And [a]increased its joy;
They rejoice before You
According to the joy of harvest,
As men rejoice (F)when they divide the spoil.
For You have broken the yoke of his burden
And the staff of his shoulder,
The rod of his oppressor,
As in the day of (G)Midian.
For every warrior’s [b]sandal from the noisy battle,
And garments rolled in blood,
(H)Will be used for burning and fuel [c]of fire.

(I)For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a (J)Son is given;
And (K)the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
(L)Wonderful, Counselor, (M)Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, (N)Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of His government and peace
(O)There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The (P)zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

The Punishment of Samaria

The Lord sent a word against (Q)Jacob,
And it has fallen on Israel.
All the people will know—
Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria—
Who say in pride and arrogance of heart:
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
But we will rebuild with hewn stones;
The sycamores are cut down,
But we will replace them with cedars.”
11 Therefore the Lord shall set up
The adversaries of Rezin against him,
And spur his enemies on,
12 The Syrians before and the Philistines behind;
And they shall devour Israel with an open mouth.

For all this His anger is not turned away,
But His hand is [d]stretched out still.

13 For the people do not turn to Him who strikes them,
Nor do they seek the Lord of hosts.
14 Therefore the Lord will cut off head and tail from Israel,
Palm branch and bulrush (R)in one day.
15 The elder and honorable, he is the head;
The prophet who teaches lies, he is the tail.
16 For (S)the leaders of this people cause them to err,
And those who are led by them are destroyed.
17 Therefore the Lord (T)will have no joy in their young men,
Nor have mercy on their fatherless and widows;
For everyone is a hypocrite and an evildoer,
And every mouth speaks [e]folly.

(U)For all this His anger is not turned away,
But His hand is stretched out still.

18 For wickedness (V)burns as the fire;
It shall devour the briers and thorns,
And kindle in the thickets of the forest;
They shall mount up like rising smoke.
19 Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts
(W)The land is burned up,
And the people shall be as fuel for the fire;
(X)No man shall spare his brother.
20 And he shall [f]snatch on the right hand
And be hungry;
He shall devour on the left hand
(Y)And not be satisfied;
(Z)Every man shall eat the flesh of his own arm.
21 Manasseh shall devour Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh;
Together they shall be (AA)against Judah.

(AB)For all this His anger is not turned away,
But His hand is stretched out still.
