Signs of the Assyrian Invasion
8 Then Yahweh said to me, “Take yourself a large tablet and write on it with a common stylus pen: Maher-Halal-Hash-Baz. 2 And I will require reliable witnesses as a witness for me: Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah.” 3 And I approached the prophetess, and she conceived, and she gave birth to a son. And Yahweh said to me, “Call his name Maher-Halal-Hash-Baz. 4 For before the boy knows to call ‘my father’ and ‘my mother,’ one will carry away the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria in the presence of the king of Assyria.”
Shiloah Waters and Euphrates Flood
5 And Yahweh continued to speak to me again, saying,
6 “Because this people has refused the gently flowing waters of Shiloah and rejoices over Rezin and the son of Remaliah, 7 therefore look! The Lord is bringing up the waters of the great and mighty river against them, the king of Assyria and all his glory.
And he will rise above all his channels,
and he will flow over all his banks.
8 And he will sweep into Judah;
he will overflow and he will flood up to the neck.
He will reach, and he will spread his wings out over your entire land,[a] God with us.”
9 Be broken, you peoples, and be dismayed.
And listen, all distant parts of the earth;
gird yourselves and be dismayed;
gird yourselves and be dismayed!
10 Make a plan,[b] but it will be frustrated!
Speak a word, but it will not stand,
for God is with us!
Wait for Yahweh
11 For Yahweh said this to me while his hand weighed heavily on me,[c]
and he warned me not to walk[d] in the way of this people, saying,
12 “You must not call conspiracy everything that this people calls conspiracy,
and you must not share its fear,[e] and you must not be in dread.
13 You shall regard Yahweh of hosts as holy,
and he is your[f] fear, and he is your dread.
14 And he will become like a sanctuary and a stumbling-stone,
and like a stumbling-rock for the two houses of Israel,
like a trap and a snare for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15 And many shall stumble among them,
and they shall fall and they shall be broken,
and they shall be ensnared and they shall be caught.”
16 Bind up the testimony;
seal the teaching among my disciples.
17 And I will wait for Yahweh,
who hides his face from the house of Jacob,
and I will await him.
18 Look! I and the children whom Yahweh has given to me are like signs and portents in Israel from Yahweh of hosts, the one who dwells on the mountain of Zion. 19 Now if they tell you, “Consult the ghosts and the spirits, those who chirp and those who mutter. Should not a people consult its gods, the dead on behalf of the living, 20 for teaching and for testimony?” surely they who speak like this have no dawn.[g]
21 And it[h] will pass through it[i] distressed and hungry, and this shall happen: when it is hungry, it will be enraged, and it will curse its king and its gods,[j] and it will face upwar 22 or look to the earth. But look! Distress and darkness, the gloom of affliction! And it will be thrust into darkness!

Deux signes
8 L’Eternel me dit : Prends une grande tablette et inscris-y avec un burin ordinaire : Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz (Proche pillage, imminent butin).
2 Je pris pour moi des témoins dignes de foi : le prêtre Urie, et Zacharie, fils de Yebérékia[a].
3 Je m’approchai de ma femme, la prophétesse, elle devint enceinte et mit au monde un fils. Et l’Eternel me dit : Appelle-le : Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz. 4 Car avant que l’enfant sache appeler : Papa, Maman, on emportera les richesses de Damas et le butin de Samarie devant le roi d’Assyrie.
L’invasion assyrienne
5 L’Eternel me parla encore en ces termes :
6 Puisque ce peuple a méprisé
les eaux de Siloé[b]
qui coulent doucement,
et qu’il s’est réjoui ╵à cause de Retsîn
et du fils de Remalia[c],
7 à cause de cela, ╵voici que le Seigneur ╵fera monter sur eux
les grandes eaux du puissant fleuve :
ce sera le roi d’Assyrie ╵et toute sa puissance.
Oui, il sortira partout de son lit,
et il débordera ╵au-dessus de toutes ses berges,
8 il pénétrera en Juda,
l’inondera et le submergera,
il lui montera jusqu’au cou
et le déploiement de ses flots
couvrira toute l’étendue ╵de ton pays, Emmanuel.
9 Sonnez l’alarme[d], ô peuples,
vous serez terrifiés !
Prêtez l’oreille,
vous les pays lointains,
soyez prêts au combat,
vous serez terrifiés !
Soyez prêts au combat,
vous serez terrifiés !
10 Elaborez votre projet ;
mais il sera anéanti.
Exposez votre plan ;
mais il ne réussira pas.
Car Dieu est avec nous[e].
Dieu tient l’univers dans sa main
11 Car voici ce que l’Eternel ╵m’a déclaré
lorsque, par sa puissance, ╵il m’a saisi
et qu’il m’a averti ╵de ne pas suivre le chemin
emprunté par ce peuple :
12 Ne dites pas complot
pour tout ce que ce peuple ╵nomme complot ;
ne craignez pas tout ce qu’il craint[f],
ne le redoutez pas.
13 Mais reconnaissez comme saint
le Seigneur des armées célestes ;
c’est lui que vous craindrez,
lui qu’il faut redouter.
14 Il est un sanctuaire,
mais il sera aussi ╵une pierre qu’on heurte,
un rocher qui fait trébucher[g]
pour les deux royaumes israélites,
un piège et un filet
pour les habitants de Jérusalem.
15 Beaucoup d’entre eux ╵s’y heurteront,
ils tomberont ╵et ils se briseront,
ils seront pris au piège ╵et capturés.
16 Lie donc cet acte pour le conserver,
et scelle cette loi ╵parmi ceux qui sont mes disciples.
17 Moi je m’attends à l’Eternel,
qui se détourne ╵du peuple de Jacob ;
je me confie en lui[h].
18 Me voici avec les disciples ╵qui m’ont été donnés ╵par l’Eternel.
Nous servons de signes et de présages ╵en Israël.
Cela est dû à l’Eternel, le Seigneur des armées célestes, dont la demeure est sur le mont Sion.
19 Lorsqu’on viendra vous dire : « Allez donc consulter ceux qui évoquent les esprits, ceux qui prédisent l’avenir, ceux qui chuchotent et marmottent ! Les peuples ne doivent-ils pas consulter leurs dieux et s’adresser aux morts en faveur des vivants ? », alors vous répondrez : 20 « A la Loi et à l’acte écrit ! ». Si l’on ne parle pas ainsi, alors pas d’aurore pour eux ! 21 On traversera le pays, pressé et affamé, et il arrivera, sous l’effet de la faim, qu’exaspéré, en levant les yeux vers le haut, on maudira son roi, on maudira son Dieu. 22 Puis, regardant la terre, on n’y trouvera que détresse, ténèbres, sombres angoisses, et l’on sera poussé dans la nuit la plus noire.
Des ténèbres à la lumière
23 Mais les ténèbres ne régneront pas à toujours sur ce pays envahi par l’angoisse. Si, dans les temps passés, Dieu a couvert d’opprobre tout le pays de Zabulon et le pays de Nephtali[i], dans les temps à venir, il couvrira de gloire la route de la mer[j], au-delà du Jourdain, le district des populations étrangères[k].

8 Moreover the Lord said to me, “Take a large scroll, and (A)write on it with a man’s pen concerning [a]Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz. 2 And I will take for Myself faithful witnesses to record, (B)Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.”
3 Then I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the Lord said to me, “Call his name Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz; 4 (C)for before the child [b]shall have knowledge to cry ‘My father’ and ‘My mother,’ (D)the riches of Damascus and the [c]spoil of Samaria will be taken away before the king of Assyria.”
5 The Lord also spoke to me again, saying:
6 “Inasmuch as these people refused
The waters of (E)Shiloah that flow softly,
And rejoice (F)in Rezin and in Remaliah’s son;
7 Now therefore, behold, the Lord brings up over them
The waters of [d]the River, strong and mighty—
The king of Assyria and all his glory;
He will [e]go up over all his channels
And go over all his banks.
8 He will pass through Judah,
He will overflow and pass over,
(G)He will reach up to the neck;
And the stretching out of his wings
Will [f]fill the breadth of Your land, O (H)Immanuel.[g]
9 “Be(I) shattered, O you peoples, and be broken in pieces!
Give ear, all you from far countries.
Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces;
Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces.
10 (J)Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing;
Speak the word, (K)but it will not stand,
(L)For [h]God is with us.”
Fear God, Heed His Word
11 For the Lord spoke thus to me with [i]a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying:
12 “Do not say, ‘A conspiracy,’
Concerning all that this people call a conspiracy,
Nor be afraid of their [j]threats, nor be [k]troubled.
13 The Lord of hosts, Him you shall hallow;
Let Him be your fear,
And let Him be your dread.
14 (M)He will be as a [l]sanctuary,
But (N)a stone of stumbling and a rock of [m]offense
To both the houses of Israel,
As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15 And many among them shall (O)stumble;
They shall fall and be broken,
Be snared and [n]taken.”
16 Bind up the testimony,
Seal the law among my disciples.
17 And I will wait on the Lord,
Who (P)hides His face from the house of Jacob;
And I (Q)will hope in Him.
18 (R)Here am I and the children whom the Lord has given me!
We (S)are for signs and wonders in Israel
From the Lord of hosts,
Who dwells in Mount Zion.
19 And when they say to you, (T)“Seek those who are mediums and wizards, (U)who whisper and mutter,” should not a people seek their God? Should they (V)seek the dead on behalf of the living? 20 (W)To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because (X)there[o] is no light in them.
21 They will pass through it hard-pressed and hungry; and it shall happen, when they are hungry, that they will be enraged and (Y)curse [p]their king and their God, and look upward. 22 Then they will look to the earth, and see trouble and darkness, gloom of anguish; and they will be driven into darkness.

Isaiah and His Children as Signs
8 The Lord said to me, “Take a large scroll(A) and write on it with an ordinary pen: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.”[a](B) 2 So I called in Uriah(C) the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah as reliable witnesses(D) for me. 3 Then I made love to the prophetess,(E) and she conceived and gave birth to a son.(F) And the Lord said to me, “Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.(G) 4 For before the boy knows(H) how to say ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus(I) and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.(J)”
5 The Lord spoke to me again:
6 “Because this people has rejected(K)
the gently flowing waters of Shiloah(L)
and rejoices over Rezin
and the son of Remaliah,(M)
7 therefore the Lord is about to bring against them
the mighty floodwaters(N) of the Euphrates—
the king of Assyria(O) with all his pomp.(P)
It will overflow all its channels,
run over all its banks(Q)
8 and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it,(R)
passing through it and reaching up to the neck.
Its outspread wings(S) will cover the breadth of your land,
Immanuel[b]!”(T)
9 Raise the war cry,[c](U) you nations, and be shattered!(V)
Listen, all you distant lands.
Prepare(W) for battle, and be shattered!
Prepare for battle, and be shattered!
10 Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted;(X)
propose your plan, but it will not stand,(Y)
for God is with us.[d](Z)
11 This is what the Lord says to me with his strong hand upon me,(AA) warning me not to follow(AB) the way of this people:
12 “Do not call conspiracy(AC)
everything this people calls a conspiracy;
do not fear what they fear,(AD)
and do not dread it.(AE)
13 The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy,(AF)
he is the one you are to fear,(AG)
he is the one you are to dread.(AH)
14 He will be a holy place;(AI)
for both Israel and Judah he will be
a stone(AJ) that causes people to stumble(AK)
and a rock that makes them fall.(AL)
And for the people of Jerusalem he will be
a trap and a snare.(AM)
15 Many of them will stumble;(AN)
they will fall and be broken,
they will be snared and captured.”
16 Bind up this testimony of warning(AO)
and seal(AP) up God’s instruction among my disciples.
17 I will wait(AQ) for the Lord,
who is hiding(AR) his face from the descendants of Jacob.
I will put my trust in him.(AS)
18 Here am I, and the children the Lord has given me.(AT) We are signs(AU) and symbols(AV) in Israel from the Lord Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.(AW)
The Darkness Turns to Light
19 When someone tells you to consult(AX) mediums and spiritists,(AY) who whisper and mutter,(AZ) should not a people inquire(BA) of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? 20 Consult God’s instruction(BB) and the testimony of warning.(BC) If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light(BD) of dawn. 21 Distressed and hungry,(BE) they will roam through the land;(BF) when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse(BG) their king and their God. 22 Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom,(BH) and they will be thrust into utter darkness.(BI)

14 And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15 And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.
16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.
17 And I will wait upon the Lord, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.
18 Behold, I and the children whom the Lord hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the Lord of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.
19 And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?
20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
21 And they shall pass through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it shall come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and look upward.
22 And they shall look unto the earth; and behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness.
