War against Jerusalem

Now it came about in the days of (A)Ahaz, the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that (B)Rezin the king of Aram and (C)Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but (D)could not [a]conquer it. When it was reported to the (E)house of David, saying, “The Arameans [b](F)have camped in (G)Ephraim,” his heart and the hearts of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake [c]with the wind.

Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out now to meet Ahaz, you and your son [d]Shear-jashub, at the end of the (H)conduit of the upper pool, on the highway to the [e]fuller’s field, and say to him, ‘Take care and be (I)calm, have no (J)fear and (K)do not be fainthearted because of these two stubs of smoldering (L)firebrands, on account of the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and the (M)son of Remaliah. Because (N)Aram, with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has planned evil against you, saying, “Let us go up against Judah and [f]terrorize it, and make for ourselves a breach in [g]its walls and set up the son of Tabeel as king in the midst of it,” thus says the Lord [h]God: “(O)It shall not stand nor shall it come to pass. For the head of Aram is (P)Damascus and the head of Damascus is Rezin (now within another 65 years Ephraim will be shattered, so that it is no longer a people), and the head of Ephraim is Samaria and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. (Q)If you will not believe, you surely shall not [i]last.”’”

The Child Immanuel

10 Then the Lord spoke again to Ahaz, saying, 11 “Ask a (R)sign for yourself from the Lord your God; [j]make it deep as Sheol or high as [k]heaven.” 12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, nor will I test the Lord!” 13 Then he said, “Listen now, O (S)house of David! Is it too slight a thing for you to try the patience of men, that you will (T)try the patience of (U)my God as well? 14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, (V)a [l]virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name [m](W)Immanuel. 15 He will eat (X)curds and honey [n]at the time He knows enough to refuse evil and choose good. 16 (Y)For before the boy will know enough to refuse evil and choose good, (Z)the land whose two kings you dread will be forsaken.

Trials to Come for Judah

17 The Lord will bring on you, on your people, and on your father’s house such days as have never come since the day that (AA)Ephraim separated from Judah, the (AB)king of Assyria.”

18 In that day the Lord will (AC)whistle for the fly that is in the [o](AD)remotest part of the rivers of Egypt and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. 19 They will all come and settle on the steep [p]ravines, on the (AE)ledges of the cliffs, (AF)on all the thorn bushes and on all the [q]watering places.

20 In that day the Lord will (AG)shave with a (AH)razor, (AI)hired from regions beyond (AJ)the [r]Euphrates (that is, with the king of Assyria), the head and the hair of the legs; and it will also remove the beard.

21 Now in that day a man may keep alive a (AK)heifer and a pair of sheep; 22 and because of the abundance of the milk produced he will eat curds, for everyone that is left within the land will eat (AL)curds and honey.

23 And it will come about in that day, (AM)that every place where there used to be a thousand vines, valued at a thousand shekels of silver, will become (AN)briars and thorns. 24 People will come there with bows and arrows because all the land will be briars and thorns. 25 As for all the hills which used to be cultivated with the hoe, you will not go there for fear of briars and thorns; but they will become a place for [s](AO)pasturing oxen and for sheep to trample.

Damascus and Samaria Fall

Then the Lord said to me, “Take for yourself a large tablet and (AP)write on it [t]in ordinary letters: [u](AQ)Swift is the booty, speedy is the prey. And [v]I will take to Myself faithful witnesses for testimony, (AR)Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.” So I approached the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. Then the Lord said to me, “Name him [w](AS)Maher-shalal-hash-baz; for (AT)before the boy knows how to cry out ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of (AU)Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria.”

Again the Lord spoke to me further, saying,

“Inasmuch as these people have (AV)rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah
And rejoice in (AW)Rezin and the son of Remaliah;
“Now therefore, behold, the Lord is about to bring on them the (AX)strong and abundant waters of the [x](AY)Euphrates,
Even the (AZ)king of Assyria and all his glory;
And it will (BA)rise up over all its channels and go over all its banks.
“Then (BB)it will sweep on into Judah, it will overflow and pass through,
It will (BC)reach even to the neck;
And the spread of its wings will [y]fill the breadth of [z]your land, O (BD)Immanuel.

A Believing Remnant

(BE)Be broken, O peoples, and be [aa](BF)shattered;
And give ear, all remote places of the earth.
Gird yourselves, yet be [ab]shattered;
Gird yourselves, yet be [ac]shattered.
10 (BG)Devise a plan, but it will be thwarted;
State a [ad]proposal, but (BH)it will not stand,
For [ae](BI)God is with us.”

11 For thus the Lord spoke to me [af]with (BJ)mighty power and instructed me (BK)not to walk in the way of this people, saying,

12 “You are not to say, ‘It is a (BL)conspiracy!’
In regard to all that this people call a conspiracy,
And (BM)you are not to fear [ag]what they fear or be in dread of it.
13 “It is the (BN)Lord of hosts (BO)whom you should regard as holy.
And He shall be your fear,
And He shall be your dread.
14 “Then He shall become a (BP)sanctuary;
But to both the houses of Israel, a (BQ)stone to strike and a rock to stumble over,
And a snare and a (BR)trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15 “Many (BS)will stumble over them,
Then they will fall and be broken;
They will even be snared and caught.”

16 (BT)Bind up the testimony, (BU)seal the [ah]law among (BV)my disciples. 17 And I will (BW)wait for the Lord (BX)who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob; I will even look eagerly for Him. 18 (BY)Behold, I and the children whom the Lord has given me are for (BZ)signs and wonders in Israel from the Lord of hosts, who (CA)dwells on Mount Zion.

19 When they say to you, “(CB)Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,” should not a people (CC)consult their God? Should they (CD)consult the dead on behalf of the living? 20 To the [ai](CE)law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because (CF)they have no dawn. 21 They will pass through [aj]the land (CG)hard-pressed and famished, and it will turn out that when they are hungry, they will be enraged and curse [ak]their king and their God as they face upward. 22 Then they will (CH)look to the earth, and behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and they will be (CI)driven away into darkness.

Birth and Reign of the Prince of Peace

[al]But there will be no more (CJ)gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He (CK)treated the (CL)land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the [am]Gentiles.

[an](CM)The people who walk in darkness
Will see a great light;
Those who live in a dark land,
The light will shine on them.
(CN)You shall multiply the nation,
You (CO)shall [ao]increase [ap]their gladness;
They will be glad in Your presence
As with the gladness [aq]of harvest,
As [ar](CP)men rejoice when they divide the spoil.
For (CQ)You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders,
The rod of their (CR)oppressor, as [as]at the battle of (CS)Midian.
For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult,
And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
For a (CT)child will be born to us, a (CU)son will be given to us;
And the (CV)government will [at]rest (CW)on His shoulders;
And His name will be called (CX)Wonderful Counselor, (CY)Mighty God,
Eternal (CZ)Father, Prince of (DA)Peace.
There will be (DB)no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
On the (DC)throne of David and over his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with (DD)justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
(DE)The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.

God’s Anger with Israel’s Arrogance

The Lord sends a [au]message against Jacob,
And it falls on Israel.
And all the people know it,
That is, (DF)Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,
Asserting in pride and in (DG)arrogance of heart:
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
But we will (DH)rebuild with smooth stones;
The sycamores have been cut down,
But we will replace them with cedars.”
11 Therefore the Lord raises against them adversaries from (DI)Rezin
And spurs their enemies on,
12 The Arameans on the east and the (DJ)Philistines on the west;
And they (DK)devour Israel with [av]gaping jaws.
(DL)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away
And His hand is still stretched out.

13 Yet the people (DM)do not turn back to Him who struck them,
Nor do they (DN)seek the Lord of hosts.
14 So the Lord cuts off (DO)head and tail from Israel,
Both palm branch and bulrush (DP)in a single day.
15 The head is (DQ)the elder and honorable man,
And the prophet who teaches (DR)falsehood is the tail.
16 (DS)For those who guide this people are leading them astray;
And those who are guided by them are [aw]brought to confusion.
17 Therefore the Lord does (DT)not take pleasure in their young men,
(DU)Nor does He have pity on their [ax]orphans or their widows;
For every one of them is (DV)godless and an (DW)evildoer,
And every (DX)mouth is speaking foolishness.
(DY)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away
And His hand is still stretched out.

18 (DZ)For wickedness burns like a fire;
It consumes briars and thorns;
It even sets the thickets of the forest aflame
And they roll upward in a column of smoke.
19 By the (EA)fury of the Lord of hosts the (EB)land is burned up,
And the (EC)people are like fuel for the fire;
No (ED)man spares his brother.
20 [ay]They slice off what is on the right hand but still are (EE)hungry,
And [az]they eat what is on the left hand but they are not satisfied;
Each of them eats the (EF)flesh of his own arm.
21 Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh,
(EG)And together they are against Judah.
(EH)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away
And His hand is still stretched out.

Assyria Is God’s Instrument

10 Woe to those who (EI)enact evil statutes
And to those who constantly record [ba]unjust decisions,
So as (EJ)to [bb]deprive the needy of justice
And rob the poor of My people of their rights,
So (EK)that widows may be their spoil
And that they may plunder the [bc]orphans.
Now (EL)what will you do in the (EM)day of punishment,
And in the devastation which will come (EN)from afar?
(EO)To whom will you flee for help?
And where will you leave your [bd]wealth?
Nothing remains but to crouch [be]among the (EP)captives
Or fall [bf]among the (EQ)slain.
(ER)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away
And His hand is still stretched out.

Woe to (ES)Assyria, the (ET)rod of My anger
And the staff in whose hands is (EU)My indignation,
I send it against a (EV)godless nation
And commission it against the (EW)people of My fury
To capture booty and (EX)to seize plunder,
And to [bg]trample them down like (EY)mud in the streets.
Yet it (EZ)does not so intend,
Nor does [bh]it plan so in its heart,
But rather it is [bi]its purpose to destroy
And to cut off [bj]many nations.
For it says, “Are not my princes [bk]all kings?
“Is not (FA)Calno like (FB)Carchemish,
Or (FC)Hamath like Arpad,
Or (FD)Samaria like (FE)Damascus?
10 “As my hand has reached to the (FF)kingdoms of the idols,
Whose graven images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
11 Shall I not [bl]do to Jerusalem and her images
Just as I have done to Samaria and (FG)her idols?”

12 So it will be that when the Lord has completed all His (FH)work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, He will say, “I will [bm]punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and (FI)the pomp of [bn]his haughtiness.” 13 For (FJ)he has said,

“By the power of my hand and by my wisdom I did this,
For I have understanding;
And I (FK)removed the boundaries of the peoples
And plundered their treasures,
And like a mighty man I brought down [bo]their inhabitants,
14 And my hand reached to the riches of the peoples like a (FL)nest,
And as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth;
And there was not one that flapped its wing or opened its beak or chirped.”

15 Is the (FM)axe to (FN)boast itself over the one who chops with it?
Is the saw to exalt itself over the one who wields it?
That would be like (FO)a [bp]club wielding those who lift it,
Or like (FP)a rod lifting him who is not wood.
16 Therefore the Lord, the [bq]God of hosts, will send a (FQ)wasting disease among his (FR)stout warriors;
And under his (FS)glory a fire will be kindled like a burning flame.
17 And the (FT)light of Israel will become a fire and his (FU)Holy One a flame,
And it will (FV)burn and devour his thorns and his briars in a single day.
18 And He will (FW)destroy the glory of his forest and of his fruitful garden, both soul and body,
And it will be as when a sick man wastes away.
19 And the (FX)rest of the trees of his forest will be so small in number
That a child could write them down.

A Remnant Will Return

20 Now in that day the (FY)remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob (FZ)who have escaped, will never again rely on the one who struck them, but will truly (GA)rely on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

21 A (GB)remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the (GC)mighty God.
22 For (GD)though your people, O Israel, may be like the sand of the sea,
Only a remnant within them will return;
A (GE)destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness.

23 For a complete destruction, one that is decreed, (GF)the Lord [br]God of hosts will execute in the midst of the whole land.

24 Therefore thus says the Lord [bs]God of hosts, “O My people who dwell in (GG)Zion, (GH)do not fear the Assyrian [bt]who (GI)strikes you with the rod and lifts up his staff against you, the way Egypt did. 25 For in a very (GJ)little while (GK)My indignation against you will be spent and My anger will be directed to their destruction.” 26 The Lord of hosts will (GL)arouse a scourge against him like the slaughter of (GM)Midian at the rock of Oreb; and His (GN)staff will be over the sea and He will lift it up (GO)the way He did in Egypt. 27 So it will be in that day, that [bu]his (GP)burden will be removed from your shoulders and his yoke from your neck, and the yoke will be broken because (GQ)of fatness.

28 He has come against Aiath,
He has passed through (GR)Migron;
At (GS)Michmash he deposited his (GT)baggage.
29 They have gone through (GU)the pass, saying,
(GV)Geba will be our lodging place.”
(GW)Ramah is terrified, and (GX)Gibeah of Saul has fled away.
30 Cry aloud with your voice, O daughter of (GY)Gallim!
Pay attention, Laishah and [bv]wretched (GZ)Anathoth!
31 Madmenah has fled.
The inhabitants of Gebim have sought refuge.
32 Yet today he will halt at (HA)Nob;
He (HB)shakes his fist at the mountain of the [bw](HC)daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

33 Behold, the Lord, the [bx]God of hosts, will lop off the boughs with a terrible crash;
Those also who are (HD)tall in stature will be cut down
And those who are lofty will be abased.
34 He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an iron axe,
And (HE)Lebanon will fall [by]by the Mighty One.

A Cry of Anguish and a Song of Praise.

For the choir director; upon [a]Aijeleth Hashshahar. A Psalm of David.

22 (A)My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?
[b](B)Far from my deliverance are the words of my [c](C)groaning.
O my God, I (D)cry by day, but You do not answer;
And by night, but [d]I have no rest.
Yet (E)You are holy,
O You who [e]are enthroned upon (F)the praises of Israel.
In You our fathers (G)trusted;
They trusted and You (H)delivered them.
To You they cried out and were delivered;
(I)In You they trusted and were not [f]disappointed.

But I am a (J)worm and not a man,
A (K)reproach of men and (L)despised by the people.
All who see me [g](M)sneer at me;
They [h]separate with the lip, they (N)wag the head, saying,
[i]Commit yourself to the Lord; (O)let Him deliver him;
Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.”

Yet You are He who (P)brought me forth from the womb;
You made me trust when upon my mother’s breasts.
10 Upon You I was cast (Q)from [j]birth;
You have been my God from my mother’s womb.

11 (R)Be not far from me, for [k]trouble is near;
For there is (S)none to help.
12 Many (T)bulls have surrounded me;
Strong bulls of (U)Bashan have encircled me.
13 They (V)open wide their mouth at me,
As a ravening and a roaring (W)lion.
14 I am (X)poured out like water,
And all my (Y)bones are out of joint;
My (Z)heart is like wax;
It is melted within [l]me.
15 My (AA)strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And (AB)my tongue cleaves to my jaws;
And You (AC)lay me [m]in the dust of death.
16 For (AD)dogs have surrounded me;
[n]A band of evildoers has encompassed me;
[o]They (AE)pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I can count all my bones.
(AF)They look, they stare at me;
18 They (AG)divide my garments among them,
And for my clothing they cast lots.

19 But You, O Lord, (AH)be not far off;
O You my help, (AI)hasten to my assistance.
20 Deliver my [p]soul from (AJ)the sword,
My (AK)only life from the [q]power of the dog.
21 Save me from the (AL)lion’s mouth;
From the horns of the (AM)wild oxen You (AN)answer me.

22 I will (AO)tell of Your name to my brethren;
In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.
23 (AP)You who fear the Lord, praise Him;
All you [r]descendants of Jacob, (AQ)glorify Him,
And (AR)stand in awe of Him, all you [s]descendants of Israel.
24 For He has (AS)not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted;
Nor has He (AT)hidden His face from him;
But (AU)when he cried to Him for help, He heard.

25 From You comes (AV)my praise in the great assembly;
I shall (AW)pay my vows before those who fear Him.
26 The [t]afflicted will eat and (AX)be satisfied;
Those who seek Him will (AY)praise the Lord.
Let your (AZ)heart live forever!
27 All the (BA)ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord,
And all the (BB)families of the nations will worship before [u]You.
28 For the (BC)kingdom is the Lord’s
And He (BD)rules over the nations.
29 All the [v](BE)prosperous of the earth will eat and worship,
All those who (BF)go down to the dust will bow before Him,
Even he who [w](BG)cannot keep his soul alive.
30 [x](BH)Posterity will serve Him;
It will be told of the Lord to (BI)the coming generation.
31 They will come and (BJ)will declare His righteousness
To a people (BK)who will be born, that He has performed it.

The Plot to Kill Jesus

26 (A)When Jesus had finished all these words, He said to His disciples, (B)You know that after two days (C)the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is to be (D)handed over for crucifixion.”

(E)Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in (F)the court of the high priest, named (G)Caiaphas; and they (H)plotted together to seize Jesus by stealth and kill Him. But they were saying, “Not during the festival, (I)otherwise a riot might occur among the people.”

The Precious Ointment

(J)Now when Jesus was in (K)Bethany, at the home of Simon the leper, (L)a woman came to Him with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume, and she poured it on His head as He reclined at the table. But the disciples were indignant when they saw this, and said, “Why this waste? For this perfume might have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.” 10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you bother the woman? For she has done a good deed to Me. 11 For you always have (M)the poor with you; but you do not always have Me. 12 For when she poured this perfume on My body, she did it (N)to prepare Me for burial. 13 Truly I say to you, (O)wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.”

Judas’s Bargain

14 (P)Then one of the twelve, named (Q)Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What are you willing to give me [a]to [b](R)betray Him to you?” And (S)they weighed out thirty [c]pieces of silver to him. 16 From then on he began looking for a good opportunity to [d]betray [e]Jesus.

17 (T)Now on the first day of (U)Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?” 18 And He said, “Go into the city to (V)a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “(W)My time is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.”’” 19 The disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.

The Last Passover

20 (X)Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples. 21 As they were eating, He said, (Y)Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” 22 Being deeply grieved, they [f]each one began to say to Him, “Surely not I, Lord?” 23 And He answered, (Z)He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me. 24 The Son of Man is to go, (AA)just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (AB)It would have been good [g]for that man if he had not been born.” 25 And (AC)Judas, who was betraying Him, said, “Surely it is not I, (AD)Rabbi?” Jesus *said to him, (AE)You have said it yourself.”

The Lord’s Supper Instituted

26 (AF)While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and [h](AG)after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for (AH)this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for (AI)many for forgiveness of sins. 29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

30 (AJ)After singing a hymn, they went out to (AK)the Mount of Olives.

31 Then Jesus *said to them, “You will all [i](AL)fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, ‘(AM)I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be (AN)scattered.’ 32 But after I have been raised, (AO)I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 33 But Peter said to Him, “Even though all may [j]fall away because of You, I will never fall away.” 34 Jesus said to him, (AP)Truly I say to you that (AQ)this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” 35 Peter *said to Him, “(AR)Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.” All the disciples said the same thing too.

The Garden of Gethsemane

36 (AS)Then Jesus *came with them to a place called (AT)Gethsemane, and *said to His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 And He took with Him (AU)Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed. 38 Then He *said to them, (AV)My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and (AW)keep watch with Me.”

39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let (AX)this cup pass from Me; (AY)yet not as I will, but as You will.” 40 And He *came to the disciples and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “So, you men could not (AZ)keep watch with Me for one hour? 41 (BA)Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; (BB)the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this (BC)cannot pass away unless I drink it, (BD)Your will be done.” 43 Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more. 45 Then He *came to the disciples and *said to them, [k]Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, (BE)the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!”

Jesus’ Betrayal and Arrest

47 (BF)While He was still speaking, behold, (BG)Judas, one of the twelve, came up [l]accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48 Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.” 49 Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, “Hail, (BH)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 50 And Jesus said to him, (BI)Friend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.

51 And behold, (BJ)one of those who were with Jesus [m]reached and drew out his (BK)sword, and struck the (BL)slave of the high priest and [n]cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus *said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for (BM)all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve [o](BN)legions of (BO)angels? 54 How then will (BP)the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?”

55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? (BQ)Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. 56 But all this has taken place to fulfill (BR)the Scriptures of the prophets.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.

Jesus before Caiaphas

57 (BS)Those who had seized Jesus led Him away to (BT)Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. 58 But (BU)Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the (BV)courtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the [p](BW)officers to see the outcome.

59 Now the chief priests and the whole [q](BX)Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. 60 They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on (BY)two came forward, 61 and said, “This man stated, ‘(BZ)I am able to destroy the [r]temple of God and to rebuild it [s]in three days.’” 62 The high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?” 63 But (CA)Jesus kept silent. (CB)And the high priest said to Him, “I [t](CC)adjure You by (CD)the living God, that You tell us whether You are [u]the Christ, (CE)the Son of God.” 64 Jesus *said to him, (CF)You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, [v]hereafter you will see (CG)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and (CH)coming on the clouds of heaven.”

65 Then the high priest (CI)tore his [w]robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy; 66 what do you think?” They answered, “(CJ)He deserves death!”

67 (CK)Then they (CL)spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others [x]slapped Him, 68 and said, “(CM)Prophesy to us, You [y]Christ; who is the one who hit You?”

Peter’s Denials

69 (CN)Now Peter was sitting outside in the (CO)courtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.” 71 When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and *said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man.” 73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Surely you too are one of them; (CP)for even the way you talk [z]gives you away.” 74 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, (CQ)Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.
