New International Version

The Sign of Immanuel

7 When Ahaz(A) son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, King Rezin(B) of Aram(C) and Pekah(D) son of Remaliah(E) king of Israel marched up to fight against Jerusalem, but they could not overpower it.

2 Now the house of David(F) was told, “Aram has allied itself with[a] Ephraim(G)”; so the hearts of Ahaz and his people were shaken,(H) as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind.

3 Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out, you and your son Shear-Jashub,[b](I) to meet Ahaz at the end of the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field.(J) 4 Say to him, ‘Be careful, keep calm(K) and don’t be afraid.(L) Do not lose heart(M) because of these two smoldering stubs(N) of firewood—because of the fierce anger(O) of Rezin and Aram and of the son of Remaliah.(P) 5 Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s(Q) son have plotted(R) your ruin, saying, 6 “Let us invade Judah; let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves, and make the son of Tabeel king over it.” 7 Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says:(S)

“‘It will not take place,
    it will not happen,(T)
8 for the head of Aram is Damascus,(U)
    and the head of Damascus is only Rezin.(V)
Within sixty-five years
    Ephraim will be too shattered(W) to be a people.
9 The head of Ephraim is Samaria,(X)
    and the head of Samaria is only Remaliah’s son.
If you do not stand(Y) firm in your faith,(Z)
    you will not stand at all.’”(AA)

10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, 11 “Ask the Lord your God for a sign,(AB) whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.(AC)”

12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.(AD)”

13 Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David!(AE) Is it not enough(AF) to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience(AG) of my God(AH) also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you[c] a sign:(AI) The virgin[d](AJ) will conceive and give birth to a son,(AK) and[e] will call him Immanuel.[f](AL) 15 He will be eating curds(AM) and honey(AN) when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, 16 for before the boy knows(AO) enough to reject the wrong and choose the right,(AP) the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.(AQ) 17 The Lord will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since Ephraim broke away(AR) from Judah—he will bring the king of Assyria.(AS)”

Assyria, the Lord’s Instrument

18 In that day(AT) the Lord will whistle(AU) for flies from the Nile delta in Egypt and for bees from the land of Assyria.(AV) 19 They will all come and settle in the steep ravines and in the crevices(AW) in the rocks, on all the thornbushes(AX) and at all the water holes. 20 In that day(AY) the Lord will use(AZ) a razor hired from beyond the Euphrates River(BA)—the king of Assyria(BB)—to shave your head and private parts, and to cut off your beard(BC) also.(BD) 21 In that day,(BE) a person will keep alive a young cow and two goats.(BF) 22 And because of the abundance of the milk they give, there will be curds to eat. All who remain in the land will eat curds(BG) and honey.(BH) 23 In that day,(BI) in every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels,[g](BJ) there will be only briers and thorns.(BK) 24 Hunters will go there with bow and arrow, for the land will be covered with briers(BL) and thorns. 25 As for all the hills(BM) once cultivated by the hoe, you will no longer go there for fear of the briers and thorns;(BN) they will become places where cattle are turned loose and where sheep run.(BO)

Ett budskap till kung Ahas

7 (A) När Ahas, son till Jotam, Ussias son, var kung[a] i Juda, hände det att kung Resin av Aram och kung Peka av Israel, Remaljas son, drog upp mot Jerusalem för att strida mot det. Men de lyckades inte inta staden. 2 När man berättade för Davids hus att arameerna hade slagit läger i Efraim, darrade Ahas och hans folks hjärtan som skogens träd darrar för vinden.

3 (B) Och Herren sade till Jesaja: "Gå nu med din son Shear-Jashub[b] och möt Ahas vid änden av Övre dammens vattenledning, på vägen till Tvättarfältet[c], 4 och säg till honom: Se till att vara lugn. Var inte rädd och tappa inte modet inför dessa två rykande brandstumpar, för Resin med arameerna och för Remaljas son i deras rasande vrede. 5 Aram med Efraim och Remaljas son har gjort upp onda planer mot dig och sagt: 6 ’Vi ska dra upp mot Juda och slå det med skräck och erövra det åt oss och insätta Tabals son[d] till kung där.’ 7 (C) Men så säger Herren Gud:

Det kommer inte att hända,
    det kommer inte att ske.
8 Arams huvud är Damaskus,
    och Damaskus huvud
        är bara Resin.
    Inom sextiofem år[e]
        ska Efraim vara krossat
            och inte mer vara ett folk.
9 (D) Och Efraims huvud är Samaria,
    och Samarias huvud
        är bara Remaljas son.
    Står ni inte fasta i tron
        har ni inget fäste.[f]"

10 Herren talade till Ahas igen och sade: 11 "Be om ett tecken från Herren din Gud. Be om det nerifrån djupet eller uppifrån höjden." 12 Men Ahas svarade: "Jag vill inte be om något, jag vill inte fresta Herren."

13 Då sade Jesaja: "Lyssna nu, ni av Davids hus. Räcker det inte att ni tröttar ut människor? Ska ni trötta ut min Gud också? 14 (E) Därför ska Herren själv ge er ett tecken: Se, jungfrun ska bli havande och föda en son, och hon ska ge honom namnet Immanuel[g].[h] 15 Gräddmjölk och honung ska han äta tills han förstår att förkasta det onda och välja det goda.

16 (F) För innan pojken förstår att förkasta det onda och välja det goda, ska landet vars båda kungar du fruktar vara övergivet[i]. 17 (G) Över dig och ditt folk och din fars hus ska Herren sända sådana dagar som inte förekommit sedan tiden då Efraim skilde sig från Juda[j]: Assyriens kung!

18 Och det ska ske på den dagen att Herren lockar på flugorna längst bort vid änden av Egyptens strömmar och på bina i Assyriens land. 19 De ska alla komma och slå sig ner i djupa raviner och stenklyftor, i alla törnsnår och på alla betesmarker. 20 (H) På den dagen ska Herren ta en rakkniv som är hyrd på andra sidan floden[k] – nämligen Assyriens kung – och raka av allt hår både på huvudet och nertill, och även ta bort skägget.

21 På den dagen ska en kviga och två får vara vad en man föder upp. 22 Men han ska få så mycket mjölk att han kan leva av gräddmjölk, för alla som är kvar i landet ska leva av gräddmjölk och honung. 23 Och det ska ske på den dagen att där det nu finns tusen vinstockar, värda tusen siklar silver[l], ska det växa tistel och törne. 24 Man ska gå dit med pil och båge, för hela landet ska vara täckt med tistel och törne. 25 (I) Och på alla de berg där man nu arbetar med hackan ska man inte mer gå av fruktan för tistel och törne, utan där ska man släppa lös oxar och låta får trampa ner marken."

  1. 7:1 När Ahas … var kung   Troligen ca 735 f Kr, då han som sjuttonåring blev samregent med sin far Jotam. Striderna blev blodiga (2 Krön 28:5f) och arameerna tog över den södra hamnstaden Eilat (2 Kung 16:6).
  2. 7:3 Shear-Jashub   Betyder "En rest ska vända om".
  3. 7:3 Övre dammens vattenledning … Tvättarfältet   Gihonkällans vatten (2 Krön 32:30) flöt söderut längs Kidrondalen till Siloamdammen (Joh 9:7). Här tvättades kläder.
  4. 7:6 Tabals son   Kanske en arameisk prins, kanske son till Tyrus kung Etbaal II (ca 750-738 f Kr).
  5. 7:8 Inom sextiofem år   Nordriket Israel krossades redan 722 f Kr, efter tretton år (se not till 7:16). Efter ungefär sextiofem år fyllde den assyriske kungen Esarhaddon området med olika hednafolk (Esra 4:2, 10).
  6. 7:9 fasta i tron ... fäste   Ordlek med två former av ordstammen amen. Hebr. taamínu betyder "tro, hålla fast vid", teaménu "bestå, ha fäste".
  7. 7:14 Immanuel   Betyder "Gud med oss" (jfr Matt 1:23, Joh 1:14).
  8. 7:14 Citeras i Matt 1:23 som profetia om Jesu jungfrufödelse. Hebr. almá, en orörd giftasvuxen flicka, översätts i Septuaginta med párthenos som betyder "jungfru" eller "oskuld".
  9. 7:16 övergivet   Tre år senare skövlades Damaskus år 732 f Kr av assyrierna, som avrättade Resin (2 Kung 16:9). De styckade också nordriket Israel 733 f Kr, varpå Peka mördades i en statskupp (2 Kung 15:29f). Nordrikets israeliter deporterades sedan år 722 f Kr (1 Kung 17:5f).
  10. 7:17 tiden då Efraim skilde sig från Juda   Efter Salomos död ca 930 f Kr (1 Kung 12). Före Davids och Salomos tid led folket svårt av grannfolkens invasioner (se Domarboken).

Isaiah Sent to King Ahaz(A)

7 Now it came to pass in the days of (B)Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to make war against (C)it, but could not [a]prevail against it. 2 And it was told to the house of David, saying, “Syria’s forces are [b]deployed in Ephraim.” So his heart and the heart of his people were moved as the trees of the woods are moved with the wind.

3 Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out now to meet Ahaz, you and [c]Shear-Jashub your son, at the end of the aqueduct from the upper pool, on the highway to the Fuller’s Field, 4 and say to him: [d]‘Take heed, and [e]be (D)quiet; do not fear or be fainthearted for these two stubs of smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria, and the son of Remaliah. 5 Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah have plotted evil against you, saying, 6 “Let us go up against Judah and [f]trouble it, and let us make a gap in its wall for ourselves, and set a king over them, the son of Tabel”— 7 thus says the Lord God:

(E)“It shall not stand,
Nor shall it come to pass.
8 (F)For the head of Syria is Damascus,
And the head of Damascus is Rezin.
Within sixty-five years Ephraim will be [g]broken,
So that it will not be a people.
9 The head of Ephraim is Samaria,
And the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son.
(G)If you will not believe,
Surely you shall not be established.” ’ ”

The Immanuel Prophecy

10 Moreover the Lord spoke again to Ahaz, saying, 11 (H)“Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord your God; [h]ask it either in the depth or in the height above.”

12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, nor will I test the Lord!”

13 Then he said, “Hear now, O house of David! Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will you weary my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: (I)Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear (J)a Son, and shall call His name (K)Immanuel.[i] 15 Curds and honey He shall eat, that He may know to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16 (L)For before the Child shall know to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land that you dread will be forsaken by (M)both her kings. 17 (N)The Lord will bring the king of Assyria upon you and your people and your father’s house—days that have not come since the day that (O)Ephraim departed from Judah.”

18 And it shall come to pass in that day
That the Lord (P)will whistle for the fly
That is in the farthest part of the rivers of Egypt,
And for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.
19 They will come, and all of them will rest
In the desolate valleys and in (Q)the clefts of the rocks,
And on all thorns and in all pastures.

20 In the same day the Lord will shave with a (R)hired (S)razor,
With those from beyond [j]the River, with the king of Assyria,
The head and the hair of the legs,
And will also remove the beard.

21 It shall be in that day
That a man will keep alive a young cow and two sheep;
22 So it shall be, from the abundance of milk they give,
That he will eat curds;
For curds and honey everyone will eat who is left in the land.

23 It shall happen in that day,
That wherever there could be a thousand vines
Worth a thousand shekels of silver,
(T)It will be for briers and thorns.
24 With arrows and bows men will come there,
Because all the land will become briers and thorns.

25 And to any hill which could be dug with the hoe,
You will not go there for fear of briers and thorns;
But it will become a range for oxen
And a place for sheep to roam.
