⁶ We are all infected and impure with sin. When we put on our prized robes of righteousness, we find they are but filthy rags.^[a] Like autumn leaves we fade, wither, and fall. And our sins, like the wind, sweep us away.

⁷ because the old sinful nature within us is against God. It never did obey God’s laws and it never will. ⁸ That’s why those who are still under the control of their old sinful selves, bent on following their old evil desires, can never please God.

⁶ You can never please God without faith, without depending on him. Anyone who wants to come to God must believe that there is a God and that he rewards those who sincerely look for him.
