God’s Day of Vengeance and Redemption

63 Who is this coming from Edom,(A)
from Bozrah,(B) with his garments stained crimson?(C)
Who is this, robed in splendor,
striding forward in the greatness of his strength?(D)

“It is I, proclaiming victory,
    mighty to save.”(E)

Why are your garments red,
like those of one treading the winepress?(F)

“I have trodden the winepress(G) alone;
from the nations no one was with me.
I trampled(H) them in my anger
and trod them down in my wrath;(I)
their blood spattered my garments,(J)
and I stained all my clothing.
It was for me the day of vengeance;(K)
the year for me to redeem had come.
I looked, but there was no one(L) to help,
    I was appalled that no one gave support;
so my own arm(M) achieved salvation for me,
and my own wrath sustained me.(N)
I trampled(O) the nations in my anger;
in my wrath I made them drunk(P)
and poured their blood(Q) on the ground.”

32 Their vine comes from the vine of Sodom(A)
and from the fields of Gomorrah.
Their grapes are filled with poison,(B)
    and their clusters with bitterness.(C)
33 Their wine is the venom of serpents,
    the deadly poison of cobras.(D)

34 “Have I not kept this in reserve
and sealed it in my vaults?(E)
35 It is mine to avenge;(F) I will repay.(G)
In due time their foot will slip;(H)
their day of disaster is near
and their doom rushes upon them.(I)

36 The Lord will vindicate his people(J)
    and relent(K) concerning his servants(L)
when he sees their strength is gone
and no one is left, slave(M) or free.[a]
37 He will say: “Now where are their gods,
the rock they took refuge in,(N)
38 the gods who ate the fat of their sacrifices
and drank the wine of their drink offerings?(O)
Let them rise up to help you!
    Let them give you shelter!

39 “See now that I myself am he!(P)
There is no god besides me.(Q)
I put to death(R) and I bring to life,(S)
    I have wounded and I will heal,(T)
and no one can deliver out of my hand.(U)
40 I lift my hand(V) to heaven and solemnly swear:
As surely as I live forever,(W)
41 when I sharpen my flashing sword(X)
and my hand grasps it in judgment,
I will take vengeance(Y) on my adversaries
and repay those who hate me.(Z)
42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood,(AA)
    while my sword devours flesh:(AB)
the blood of the slain and the captives,
the heads of the enemy leaders.”

43 Rejoice,(AC) you nations, with his people,[b][c]
for he will avenge the blood of his servants;(AD)
he will take vengeance on his enemies(AE)
and make atonement for his land and people.(AF)

The Heavenly Warrior Defeats the Beast

11 I saw heaven standing open(A) and there before me was a white horse, whose rider(B) is called Faithful and True.(C) With justice he judges and wages war.(D) 12 His eyes are like blazing fire,(E) and on his head are many crowns.(F) He has a name written on him(G) that no one knows but he himself.(H) 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood,(I) and his name is the Word of God.(J) 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen,(K) white(L) and clean. 15 Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword(M) with which to strike down(N) the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”[a](O) He treads the winepress(P) of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:(Q)

king of kings and lord of lords.(R)

17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds(S) flying in midair,(T) “Come,(U) gather together for the great supper of God,(V) 18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and the mighty, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people,(W) free and slave,(X) great and small.”(Y)

19 Then I saw the beast(Z) and the kings of the earth(AA) and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse(AB) and his army. 20 But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet(AC) who had performed the signs(AD) on its behalf.(AE) With these signs he had deluded(AF) those who had received the mark of the beast(AG) and worshiped its image.(AH) The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake(AI) of burning sulfur.(AJ) 21 The rest were killed with the sword(AK) coming out of the mouth of the rider on the horse,(AL) and all the birds(AM) gorged themselves on their flesh.
