Isaiah 6:8-13

New International Version

⁸Then I heard the voice^(A) of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send?^(B) And who will go for us?^(C)”

And I said, “Here am I.^(D) Send me!”

⁹He said, “Go^(E) and tell this people:

“‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding;
    be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’^(F)
¹⁰Make the heart of this people calloused;^(G)
    make their ears dull
    and close their eyes.^[a]^(H)
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
    hear with their ears,^(I)
    understand with their hearts,
and turn and be healed.”^(J)

¹¹Then I said, “For how long, Lord?”^(K)

And he answered:

“Until the cities lie ruined^(L)
    and without inhabitant,
until the houses are left deserted^(M)
    and the fields ruined and ravaged,^(N)
¹²until the Lord has sent everyone far away^(O)
    and the land is utterly forsaken.^(P)
¹³And though a tenth remains^(Q) in the land,
    it will again be laid waste.^(R)
But as the terebinth and oak
    leave stumps^(S) when they are cut down,
    so the holy^(T) seed will be the stump in the land.”^(U)

Jeremiah 31:31-34

³¹“The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
    “when I will make a new covenant^(A)
with the people of Israel
    and with the people of Judah.
³²It will not be like the covenant^(B)
    I made with their ancestors^(C)
when I took them by the hand
    to lead them out of Egypt,^(D)
because they broke my covenant,
    though I was a husband^(E) to^[a] them,^[b]”
declares the Lord.
³³“This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel
    after that time,” declares the Lord.
“I will put my law in their minds^(F)
    and write it on their hearts.^(G)
I will be their God,
    and they will be my people.^(H)
³⁴No longer will they teach^(I) their neighbor,
    or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know^(J) me,
    from the least of them to the greatest,”
declares the Lord.
“For I will forgive^(K) their wickedness
    and will remember their sins^(L) no more.”

The Fall of Jerusalem^(A)^(B)

¹⁵The Lord, the God of their ancestors, sent word to them through his messengers^(C) again and again,^(D) because he had pity on his people and on his dwelling place. ¹⁶But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his words and scoffed^(E) at his prophets until the wrath^(F) of the Lord was aroused against his people and there was no remedy.^(G) ¹⁷He brought up against them the king of the Babylonians,^[a]^(H) who killed their young men with the sword in the sanctuary, and did not spare young men^(I) or young women, the elderly or the infirm.^(J) God gave them all into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar.^(K) ¹⁸He carried to Babylon all the articles^(L) from the temple of God, both large and small, and the treasures of the Lord’s temple and the treasures of the king and his officials. ¹⁹They set fire^(M) to God’s temple^(N) and broke down the wall^(O) of Jerusalem; they burned all the palaces and destroyed^(P) everything of value there.^(Q)

²⁰He carried into exile^(R) to Babylon the remnant, who escaped from the sword, and they became servants^(S) to him and his successors until the kingdom of Persia came to power. ²¹The land enjoyed its sabbath rests;^(T) all the time of its desolation it rested,^(U) until the seventy years^(V) were completed in fulfillment of the word of the Lord spoken by Jeremiah.
