Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me!”(A) And he said, “Go and say to this people:

‘Keep listening, but do not comprehend;
keep looking, but do not understand.’(B)
10 Make the mind of this people dull,
    and stop their ears,
    and shut their eyes,
so that they may not look with their eyes
    and listen with their ears
and comprehend with their minds
    and turn and be healed.”(C)
11 Then I said, “How long, O Lord?” And he said,
“Until cities lie waste
    without inhabitant,
and houses without people,
    and the land is utterly desolate;(D)
12 until the Lord sends everyone far away,
    and vast is the emptiness in the midst of the land.(E)
13 Even if a tenth part remain in it,
    it will be burned again,
like a terebinth or an oak
    whose stump remains standing
    when it is felled.”[a]
(The holy seed is its stump.)(F)

The Righteous Reign of the Coming King

[a]But there will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.(A)

[b]The people who walked in darkness
    have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness—
    on them light has shined.(B)

The Righteousness of God’s Judgment

17 Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. To everyone who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give a white stone, and on the white stone is written a new name that no one knows except the one who receives it.(A)

14 But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed?[a] And how are they to believe[b] in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? 15 And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”(A) 16 But not all have obeyed the good news,[c] for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed[d] our message?”(B) 17 So faith[e] comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.[f]

18 But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have:

“Their voice has gone out to all the earth
    and their words to the ends of the world.”(C)

19 Again I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says,

“I will use those who are not a nation to make you jealous;
    with a foolish nation I will provoke you.”(D)

20 Then Isaiah is so bold as to say,

“I have been found by those who did not seek me;
    I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me.”(E)

21 But of Israel he says, “All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”(F)
