The Good Shepherd

10 “Truly I tell you, anyone who doesn’t enter the sheep pen by the gate but climbs in some other way is a thief and a robber.(A) The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd(B) of the sheep.(C) The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought all his own outside, he goes ahead of them. The sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will never follow a stranger; instead they will run away from him, because they don’t know the voice of strangers.” Jesus gave them this figure of speech, but they did not understand(D) what he was telling them.

Jesus said again, “Truly I tell you, I am(E) the gate for the sheep.(F) All who came before me[a] are thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn’t listen to them. I am the gate. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture. 10 A thief comes only to steal(G) and kill and destroy.(H) I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.

11 “I am the good shepherd.(I) The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.(J) 12 The hired hand, since he is not the shepherd and doesn’t own the sheep, leaves them[b] and runs away when he sees a wolf(K) coming. The wolf then snatches and scatters them. 13 This happens because he is a hired hand and doesn’t care about the sheep.

14 “I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me, and I know the Father.(L) I lay down my life(M) for the sheep.

Another Counselor Promised

15 “If you love me, you will keep[a] my commands.(A) 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor[b](B) to be with you forever. 17 He is the Spirit(C) of truth.(D) The world is unable to receive him because it doesn’t see him or know him. But you do know him, because he remains with you and will be[c] in you.(E)

The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you. 19 In a little while the world will no longer see me,(F) but you will see me.(G) Because I live, you will live(H) too. 20 On that day you will know that I am in my Father,(I) you are in me, and I am in you. 21 The one who has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.(J) And the one who loves me will be loved by my Father.(K) I also will love him and will reveal myself to him.”

22 Judas(L) (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it you’re going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” (M)

23 Jesus answered, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.(N) 24 The one who doesn’t love me will not keep my words. The word that you hear is not mine but is from the Father who sent me.(O)

25 “I have spoken these things to you while I remain with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit,(P) whom the Father will send(Q) in my name, will teach you all things(R) and remind you of everything I have told you.(S)

Evangelization of Europe

They went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia; they had been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia.(A) When they came to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus(B) did not allow them. Passing by Mysia they went down to Troas.(C) During the night Paul had a vision in which a Macedonian man was standing and pleading with him, “Cross over to Macedonia and help us!” (D) 10 After(E) he had seen the vision, we immediately made efforts to set out for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God—who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly—and it will be given to him.(A) But let him ask in faith without doubting.[a] For the doubter is like the surging sea, driven and tossed by the wind.
