The Compassion of the Lord

55 ^(A)“Come, everyone who thirsts,
    come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
    ^(B)come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
    without money and without price.
²^(C)Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
    and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
    and delight yourselves in rich food.
³Incline your ear, and come to me;
    ^(D)hear, that your soul may live;
^(E)and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
    ^(F)my steadfast, sure love for ^(G)David.

⁵And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, “Arise and eat.” ⁶And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again. ⁷And the angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you.” ⁸And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food ^(A)forty days and forty nights to ^(B)Horeb, the mount of God.
