Isaiah 50:3-6

New International Version

³I clothe the heavens with darkness^(A)
and make sackcloth^(B) its covering.”

⁴The Sovereign Lord^(C) has given me a well-instructed tongue,^(D)
    to know the word that sustains the weary.^(E)
He wakens me morning by morning,^(F)
    wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.^(G)
⁵The Sovereign Lord^(H) has opened my ears;^(I)
    I have not been rebellious,^(J)
    I have not turned away.
⁶I offered my back to those who beat^(K) me,
    my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard;^(L)
I did not hide my face
    from mocking and spitting.^(M)

Matthew 27:27-31

The Soldiers Mock Jesus^(A)

²⁷Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium^(B) and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. ²⁸They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,^(C) ²⁹and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.^(D) ³⁰They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.^(E) ³¹After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.^(F)
