Isaiah 47:2-11
New International Version
2 Take millstones(A) and grind(B) flour;
take off your veil.(C)
Lift up your skirts,(D) bare your legs,
and wade through the streams.
3 Your nakedness(E) will be exposed
and your shame(F) uncovered.
I will take vengeance;(G)
I will spare no one.(H)”
5 “Sit in silence,(M) go into darkness,(N)
queen city of the Babylonians;(O)
no more will you be called
queen(P) of kingdoms.(Q)
6 I was angry(R) with my people
and desecrated my inheritance;(S)
I gave them into your hand,(T)
and you showed them no mercy.(U)
Even on the aged
you laid a very heavy yoke.
7 You said, ‘I am forever(V)—
the eternal queen!’(W)
But you did not consider these things
or reflect(X) on what might happen.(Y)
8 “Now then, listen, you lover of pleasure,
lounging in your security(Z)
and saying to yourself,
‘I am, and there is none besides me.(AA)
I will never be a widow(AB)
or suffer the loss of children.’
9 Both of these will overtake you
in a moment,(AC) on a single day:
loss of children(AD) and widowhood.(AE)
They will come upon you in full measure,
in spite of your many sorceries(AF)
and all your potent spells.(AG)
10 You have trusted(AH) in your wickedness
and have said, ‘No one sees me.’(AI)
Your wisdom(AJ) and knowledge mislead(AK) you
when you say to yourself,
‘I am, and there is none besides me.’
11 Disaster(AL) will come upon you,
and you will not know how to conjure it away.
A calamity will fall upon you
that you cannot ward off with a ransom;
a catastrophe you cannot foresee
will suddenly(AM) come upon you.
