45 Ainsi parle l'Éternel à son oint, à Cyrus,

²Qu'il tient par la main, Pour terrasser les nations devant lui, Et pour relâcher la ceinture des rois, Pour lui ouvrir les portes, Afin qu'elles ne soient plus fermées; Je marcherai devant toi, J'aplanirai les chemins montueux, Je romprai les portes d'airain, Et je briserai les verrous de fer.

³Je te donnerai des trésors cachés, Des richesses enfouies, Afin que tu saches Que je suis l'Éternel qui t'appelle par ton nom, Le Dieu d'Israël.

⁴Pour l'amour de mon serviteur Jacob, Et d'Israël, mon élu, Je t'ai appelé par ton nom, Je t'ai parlé avec bienveillance, avant que tu me connusses.

⁵Je suis l'Éternel, et il n'y en a point d'autre, Hors moi il n'y a point de Dieu; Je t'ai ceint, avant que tu me connusses.

⁶C'est afin que l'on sache, du soleil levant au soleil couchant, Que hors moi il n'y a point de Dieu: Je suis l'Éternel, et il n'y en a point d'autre.

⁷Je forme la lumière, et je crée les ténèbres, Je donne la prospérité, et je crée l'adversité; Moi, l'Éternel, je fais toutes ces choses.

⁸Que les cieux répandent d'en haut Et que les nuées laissent couler la justice! Que la terre s'ouvre, que le salut y fructifie, Et qu'il en sorte à la fois la délivrance! Moi, l'Éternel, je crée ces choses.

⁹Malheur à qui conteste avec son créateur! -Vase parmi des vases de terre! -L'argile dit-elle à celui qui la façonne: Que fais-tu? Et ton oeuvre: Il n'as point de mains?

¹⁰Malheur à qui dit à son père: Pourquoi m'as-tu engendré? Et à sa mère: Pourquoi m'as-tu enfanté?

¹¹Ainsi parle l'Éternel, le Saint d'Israël, et son créateur: Veut-on me questionner sur l'avenir, Me donner des ordres sur mes enfants et sur l'oeuvre de mes mains?

¹²C'est moi qui ai fait la terre, Et qui sur elle ai créé l'homme; C'est moi, ce sont mes mains qui ont déployé les cieux, Et c'est moi qui ai disposé toute leur armée.

¹³C'est moi qui ai suscité Cyrus dans ma justice, Et j'aplanirai toutes ses voies; Il rebâtira ma ville, et libérera mes captifs, Sans rançon ni présents, Dit l'Éternel des armées.

¹⁴Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Les gains de l'Égypte et les profits de l'Éthiopie, Et ceux des Sabéens à la taille élevée, Passeront chez toi et seront à toi; Ces peuples marcheront à ta suite, Ils passeront enchaînés, Ils se prosterneront devant toi, et te diront en suppliant: C'est auprès de toi seulement que se trouve Dieu, Et il n'y a point d'autre Dieu que lui.

¹⁵Mais tu es un Dieu qui te caches, Dieu d'Israël, sauveur!

¹⁶Ils sont tous honteux et confus, Ils s'en vont tous avec ignominie, Les fabricateurs d'idoles.

¹⁷C'est par l'Éternel qu'Israël obtient le salut, Un salut éternel; Vous ne serez ni honteux ni confus, Jusque dans l'éternité.

¹⁸Car ainsi parle l'Éternel, Le créateur des cieux, le seul Dieu, Qui a formé la terre, qui l'a faite et qui l'a affermie, Qui l'a créée pour qu'elle ne fût pas déserte, Qui l'a formée pour qu'elle fût habitée: Je suis l'Éternel, et il n'y en a point d'autre.

¹⁹Je n'ai point parlé en cachette, Dans un lieu ténébreux de la terre; Je n'ai point dit à la postérité de Jacob: Cherchez-moi vainement! Moi, l'Éternel, je dis ce qui est vrai, Je proclame ce qui est droit.

²⁰Assemblez-vous et venez, approchez ensemble, Réchappés des nations! Ils n'ont point d'intelligence, ceux qui portent leur idole de bois, Et qui invoquent un dieu incapable de sauver.

²¹Déclarez-le, et faites-les venir! Qu'ils prennent conseil les uns des autres! Qui a prédit ces choses dès le commencement, Et depuis longtemps les a annoncées? N'est-ce pas moi, l'Éternel? Il n'y a point d'autre Dieu que moi, Je suis le seul Dieu juste et qui sauve.

²²Tournez-vous vers moi, et vous serez sauvés, Vous tous qui êtes aux extrémités de la terre! Car je suis Dieu, et il n'y en a point d'autre.

²³Je le jure par moi-même, La vérité sort de ma bouche et ma parole ne sera point révoquée: Tout genou fléchira devant moi, Toute langue jurera par moi.

²⁴En l'Éternel seul, me dira-t-on, résident la justice et la force; A lui viendront, pour être confondus, Tous ceux qui étaient irrités contre lui.

²⁵Par l'Éternel seront justifiés et glorifiés Tous les descendants d'Israël.

Cyrus, the Lord’s Chosen One

45 This is what the Lord says to Cyrus, his anointed one,
    whose right hand he will empower.
Before him, mighty kings will be paralyzed with fear.
    Their fortress gates will be opened,
    never to shut again.
²This is what the Lord says:

“I will go before you, Cyrus,
    and level the mountains.^[a]
I will smash down gates of bronze
    and cut through bars of iron.
³And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness—
    secret riches.
I will do this so you may know that I am the Lord,
    the God of Israel, the one who calls you by name.

⁴“And why have I called you for this work?
    Why did I call you by name when you did not know me?
It is for the sake of Jacob my servant,
    Israel my chosen one.
⁵I am the Lord;
    there is no other God.
I have equipped you for battle,
    though you don’t even know me,
⁶so all the world from east to west
    will know there is no other God.
I am the Lord, and there is no other.
⁷    I create the light and make the darkness.
I send good times and bad times.
    I, the Lord, am the one who does these things.

⁸“Open up, O heavens,
    and pour out your righteousness.
Let the earth open wide
    so salvation and righteousness can sprout up together.
    I, the Lord, created them.

⁹“What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator.
    Does a clay pot argue with its maker?
Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying,
    ‘Stop, you’re doing it wrong!’
Does the pot exclaim,
    ‘How clumsy can you be?’
¹⁰How terrible it would be if a newborn baby said to its father,
    ‘Why was I born?’
or if it said to its mother,
    ‘Why did you make me this way?’”

¹¹This is what the Lord says—
    the Holy One of Israel and your Creator:
“Do you question what I do for my children?
    Do you give me orders about the work of my hands?
¹²I am the one who made the earth
    and created people to live on it.
With my hands I stretched out the heavens.
    All the stars are at my command.
¹³I will raise up Cyrus to fulfill my righteous purpose,
    and I will guide his actions.
He will restore my city and free my captive people—
    without seeking a reward!
    I, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, have spoken!”

Future Conversion of Gentiles

¹⁴This is what the Lord says:

“You will rule the Egyptians,
    the Ethiopians,^[b] and the Sabeans.
They will come to you with all their merchandise,
    and it will all be yours.
They will follow you as prisoners in chains.
    They will fall to their knees in front of you and say,
‘God is with you, and he is the only God.
    There is no other.’”

¹⁵Truly, O God of Israel, our Savior,
    you work in mysterious ways.
¹⁶All craftsmen who make idols will be humiliated.
    They will all be disgraced together.
¹⁷But the Lord will save the people of Israel
    with eternal salvation.
Throughout everlasting ages,
    they will never again be humiliated and disgraced.

¹⁸For the Lord is God,
    and he created the heavens and earth
    and put everything in place.
He made the world to be lived in,
    not to be a place of empty chaos.
“I am the Lord,” he says,
    “and there is no other.
¹⁹I publicly proclaim bold promises.
    I do not whisper obscurities in some dark corner.
I would not have told the people of Israel^[c] to seek me
    if I could not be found.
I, the Lord, speak only what is true
    and declare only what is right.

²⁰“Gather together and come,
    you fugitives from surrounding nations.
What fools they are who carry around their wooden idols
    and pray to gods that cannot save!
²¹Consult together, argue your case.
    Get together and decide what to say.
Who made these things known so long ago?
    What idol ever told you they would happen?
Was it not I, the Lord?
    For there is no other God but me,
a righteous God and Savior.
    There is none but me.
²²Let all the world look to me for salvation!
    For I am God; there is no other.
²³I have sworn by my own name;
    I have spoken the truth,
    and I will never go back on my word:
Every knee will bend to me,
    and every tongue will declare allegiance to me.^[d]”
²⁴The people will declare,
    “The Lord is the source of all my righteousness and strength.”
And all who were angry with him
    will come to him and be ashamed.
²⁵In the Lord all the generations of Israel will be justified,
    and in him they will boast.

45 “Thus says the Lord to His anointed,
To ^(A)Cyrus, whose ^(B)right hand I have ^[a]held—
^(C)To subdue nations before him
And ^(D)loose the armor of kings,
To open before him the double doors,
So that the gates will not be shut:
²‘I will go before you
^(E)And^[b] make the ^[c]crooked places straight;
^(F)I will break in pieces the gates of bronze
And cut the bars of iron.
³I will give you the treasures of darkness
And hidden riches of secret places,
^(G)That you may know that I, the Lord,
Who ^(H)call you by your name,
Am the God of Israel.
⁴For ^(I)Jacob My servant’s sake,
And Israel My elect,
I have even called you by your name;
I have named you, though you have not known Me.
⁵I ^(J)am the Lord, and ^(K)there is no other;
There is no God besides Me.
^(L)I will gird you, though you have not known Me,
⁶^(M)That they may ^(N)know from the rising of the sun to its setting
That there is none besides Me.
I am the Lord, and there is no other;
⁷I form the light and create darkness,
I make peace and ^(O)create calamity;
I, the Lord, do all these things.’

⁸“Rain^(P) down, you heavens, from above,
And let the skies pour down righteousness;
Let the earth open, let them bring forth salvation,
And let righteousness spring up together.
I, the Lord, have created it.

⁹“Woe to him who strives with ^(Q)his Maker!
Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth!
^(R)Shall the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’
Or shall your handiwork say, ‘He has no hands’?
¹⁰Woe to him who says to his father, ‘What are you begetting?’
Or to the woman, ‘What have you brought forth?’ ”

¹¹Thus says the Lord,
The Holy One of Israel, and his Maker:
^(S)“Ask Me of things to come concerning ^(T)My sons;
And concerning ^(U)the work of My hands, you command Me.
¹²^(V)I have made the earth,
And ^(W)created man on it.
I—My hands—stretched out the heavens,
And ^(X)all their host I have commanded.
¹³^(Y)I have raised him up in righteousness,
And I will ^[d]direct all his ways;
He shall ^(Z)build My city
And let My exiles go free,
^(AA)Not for price nor reward,”
Says the Lord of hosts.

The Lord, the Only Savior

¹⁴Thus says the Lord:

^(AB)“The labor of Egypt and merchandise of Cush
And of the Sabeans, men of stature,
Shall come over to you, and they shall be yours;
They shall walk behind you,
They shall come over ^(AC)in chains;
And they shall bow down to you.
They will make supplication to you, saying, ^(AD)‘Surely God is in you,
And there is no other;
^(AE)There is no other God.’ ”

¹⁵Truly You are God, ^(AF)who hide Yourself,
O God of Israel, the Savior!
¹⁶They shall be ^(AG)ashamed
And also disgraced, all of them;
They shall go in confusion together,
Who are makers of idols.
¹⁷^(AH)But Israel shall be saved by the Lord
With an ^(AI)everlasting salvation;
You shall not be ashamed or ^(AJ)disgraced
Forever and ever.

¹⁸For thus says the Lord,
^(AK)Who created the heavens,
Who is God,
Who formed the earth and made it,
Who has established it,
Who did not create it ^[e]in vain,
Who formed it to be ^(AL)inhabited:
^(AM)“I am the Lord, and there is no other.
¹⁹I have not spoken in ^(AN)secret,
In a dark place of the earth;
I did not say to the seed of Jacob,
‘Seek Me ^[f]in vain’;
^(AO)I, the Lord, speak righteousness,
I declare things that are right.

²⁰“Assemble yourselves and come;
Draw near together,
You who have escaped from the nations.
^(AP)They have no knowledge,
Who carry the wood of their carved image,
And pray to a god that cannot save.
²¹Tell and bring forth your case;
Yes, let them take counsel together.
^(AQ)Who has declared this from ancient time?
Who has told it from that time?
Have not I, the Lord?
^(AR)And there is no other God besides Me,
A just God and a Savior;
There is none besides Me.

²²“Look to Me, and be saved,
^(AS)All you ends of the earth!
For I am God, and there is no other.
²³^(AT)I have sworn by Myself;
The word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness,
And shall not return,
That to Me every ^(AU)knee shall bow,
^(AV)Every tongue shall take an oath.
²⁴He shall say,
^[g]‘Surely in the Lord I have ^(AW)righteousness and strength.
To Him men shall come,
And ^(AX)all shall be ashamed
Who are incensed against Him.

¹¹“This is what the Lord says—

Concerning things to come,
    do you question me about my children,
    or give me orders about the work of my hands?^(AH)
¹²It is I who made the earth^(AI)
    and created mankind on it.
My own hands stretched out the heavens;^(AJ)
    I marshaled their starry hosts.^(AK)
¹³I will raise up Cyrus^[b]^(AL) in my righteousness:

¹⁵Truly you are a God who has been hiding^(AX) himself,
    the God and Savior^(AY) of Israel.
¹⁶All the makers of idols will be put to shame and disgraced;^(AZ)
    they will go off into disgrace together.
¹⁷But Israel will be saved^(BA) by the Lord
    with an everlasting salvation;^(BB)
you will never be put to shame or disgraced,^(BC)
    to ages everlasting.

¹⁸For this is what the Lord says—
he who created the heavens,
    he is God;
he who fashioned and made the earth,^(BD)
    he founded it;
he did not create it to be empty,^(BE)
    but formed it to be inhabited^(BF)—
he says:
“I am the Lord,
    and there is no other.^(BG)
¹⁹I have not spoken in secret,^(BH)
    from somewhere in a land of darkness;^(BI)
I have not said to Jacob’s descendants,^(BJ)
    ‘Seek^(BK) me in vain.’
I, the Lord, speak the truth;
    I declare what is right.^(BL)

²⁰“Gather together^(BM) and come;
    assemble, you fugitives from the nations.
Ignorant^(BN) are those who carry^(BO) about idols of wood,
    who pray to gods that cannot save.^(BP)
²¹Declare what is to be, present it—
    let them take counsel together.
Who foretold^(BQ) this long ago,
    who declared it from the distant past?^(BR)
Was it not I, the Lord?
    And there is no God apart from me,^(BS)
a righteous God^(BT) and a Savior;^(BU)
    there is none but me.

²²“Turn^(BV) to me and be saved,^(BW)
    all you ends of the earth;^(BX)
    for I am God, and there is no other.^(BY)
²³By myself I have sworn,^(BZ)
    my mouth has uttered in all integrity^(CA)
    a word that will not be revoked:^(CB)
Before me every knee will bow;^(CC)
    by me every tongue will swear.^(CD)
²⁴They will say of me, ‘In the Lord alone
    are deliverance^(CE) and strength.^(CF)’”
All who have raged against him
    will come to him and be put to shame.^(CG)
²⁵But all the descendants^(CH) of Israel
    will find deliverance^(CI) in the Lord
    and will make their boast in him.^(CJ)
